We originally wanted a brown/red one but we just fell in love with ours and couldn't not adopt him.

I'm not sure if you're doing it but crate training is an absolute must. It'll make your life so much easier once your little guy gets used to it. We feed Chewie all his meals in the crate and he now will go in there when he's tired and wants to sleep. He also won't pee in there so it's useful for sleeping in at night.

In terms of training - we managed to teach him sit on the day we brought him him and teaching them to drop things is really simple as well. Play a bit of tug-of-war with him and then say "drop it" or "let go" (either is fine, but only use one or the other - not both). Hold a treat by his nose and he'll drop it. Do it a few times and he'll be dropping things on command in no time at all.

What I love about ours is we just don't need to bathe him frequently. We've had ours for almost 6 weeks now and we've only showered him once. His coat just looks amazing and he still smells pretty clean!

The breed itself is just so playful and generally will love to meet every single person, dog and anything else. He'll be a useless guard dog but a fun little companion.

I'd recommend looking at getting some puzzle/IQ toys for your dog. It'll help their mental capacity and surprisingly tires them out as though they've had a run around the garden. We started him on this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Trixie-Dog-Activity-Flip-Board/dp/B0054Q9TMA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1450062456&sr=8-2&keywords=dog+puzzle

Hide some high value treats in there (cheese!) and watch him entertain himself for half an hour. There are other toys but that has definitely worked for us.

Woot! Welcome aboard the Mastiff family! We rescued a 6 month old English Mastiff and he's now about 3 years old.

A Bullmastiff will have a different attitude than an English (brindle is a coat color pattern – yours is an English Mastiff). The bulldog traits will make the dog smaller and have more aggressive tendencies. Bullmastiffs were bred to knock poachers to the ground – size and power of the Mastiff, attitude of the bulldog.

Bloat kills Mastiffs and other big-chested dogs and you can help prevent it. Do some research on it, but what we do is give the dogs plenty of time between exercise, water, and food.

LOTS of fresh water. Change it daily. Consider something like this.

It's easy to read "highly sensitive and reserved" as "stupid". Mastiffs are the former and not the latter in general.

Bewaaaaaaaaaaare the tail. It's like a tube sock filled with D-cell batteries.

Sit on the floor a lot. Your Mastiff will probably come sit on your lap. While this is reasonably dangerous to your soft innards, the dog will love it.

Don't stuff the pup full of food. Don't be a size queen/king. The AKC has no top end of the weight range for the breed, but so what? Too much weight will stress joints. ACL surgery on a dog, really? We change the dog's input based on its output. Too firm, too loose, try a different food.

Frozen (never cooked) soup bones last forever and are the most durable chew toys.

Clean the ears! They may develop acne under the jowls and sometimes this leaves blood on the carpet when they stand up.

At 3 years old the Mastiff may still NOT be done growing mentally, emotionally, and physically. They grow very slowly.

The last tip is the most important. Mastiffs hate to be alone. Keep them inside with a companion as much as possible.

Best of luck!! It's such a neat breed.

Oh we are very well aware of puppy accidents Our dogs are older now but we've had dogs all of our lives. We are in our late 60s so that's a lot of dogs, many puppies and pee!

First link from PetMD with various suggestions.

Second is from Amazon and lists a good enzyme cleaner (there are others to check for but this is one to think of)

Good luck with Grandma's carpet. Would be nice to get it all cleaned up in her memory :)

if you leave it saved in your cart the wisdom panel often is a deal of the day, you'll get an email when it drops in price

found my dog which the rescue said was part Vizla is actually pure Rebone coonhound, so much for giving her a breed appropriate name of Paprika. To make it right we decided her middle name is Ann to make her a nice southern girl, Paprika Ann

Harness.

You can also get it here Signature K-9

It isn't cheap, but how we saw it, is that it will last a very long time, so we can use it on any GSD we get in the future.

The harness is awesome and military grade I definitely recommend it! I need to buy the strap extensions it just barely fits around Apollo at the moment. They sell those on Signature K-9 The bag on his left and the canteen he caries i found at a local military surplus store, they are MOLLE, and hook right up to his harness. Let me know if you have any more questions... I am working on a detailed review of the harness system

One year ago I was introduced to the reddit community via epic AMA. To celebrate my cake day I'm giving away Kindle copies of my book, "Chomp, Chomp, Chomp, How I Survived a Bear Attack and Other Cautionary Tales", to any redditor who would like to read it-- and about these two wonderful boys.

Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009PXTGHG

And the link to the AMA, #5 here: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/top/?sort=top&t=all

looks like she needs something more engaging to do. I'd suggest some interactive toys, or possibly a dog sport (even out in the yard; something like disc dog or fly ball) during your free time.

EDIT: it looks like you can buy replacement bottoms: http://www.amazon.com/MidWest-Life-Stages-Crate-Replacement/dp/B0002NNWDW/

I did some quick research on those documentaries and noticed 2 that kept coming up.

War Dogs: America's Forgotten Heroes - 1999

And

Walking Point: Vietnam Scout Dogs.

The second video I'm not sure what it says cuz I'm at work but it seems like it's pretty decent based on comments.

I let Otto's fur grow out for the winter time, Nebraska winters suck.

I did use that type of comb for a while, but then I discovered this, which I find to work much better. It does a much better job grabbing the fur that doesn't shed.

u/goots · 2 pointsr/dogpictures

My god, he's my first dog and I can't stop thinking about him. My wife doesn't like the typical schnauzer cut, so I think little Oscar may be looking like Otto soon enough.

BTW, we just got this for him and I used it yesterday. It's awesome. Highly suggest to get one if you don't have one already.

u/ThatGuyinHouston · 2 pointsr/dogpictures

Ah, that's interesting!

Here's what I use, but I'm glad I have ceramic-tile floors, too.

We cook for our dogs. That has greatly reduced the flatulence and bathing him in a benzoyl peroxide shampoo has helped his coat.

The link below is the book that our vet recommended. The recipes are easy and can be prepared in large batches and be frozen. We have five dogs and have found it to be quite economical.

Here you go, it's part of Her Universe's line. Ashley Eckstein created her own fashion line after realize there was nothing actually cute and fitted for girls into 'geeky' things. She fixed it, and is awesome.

I love it. It is really liberating. Now we can go on any trail and I just throw a covered ice or heat pack in there. Here it is. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0096SCXQQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?qid=1375800008&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX110_SY190

She is tiny! I read this book called Sweetwater Creek and ever since than I've loved Boykins.

u/bugdog · 2 pointsr/dogpictures

I have always loved that cartoon, but had no idea it was based on a book until my husband mentioned it. We initially were arguing over what Pongo's wife's name was (we have the best arguments). I insisted it was Perdita and he insisted that it was Missis (as in Mrs. Pongo). We were both right because in the book, they adopt Perdita as a wet nurse for Missis' 15 puppies.

Yes! I was so taken aback by it at first. Her parents of course bought it for her, and it's to make her lunging/pulling habit more comfortable for her and the walker. They work a lot so her manners are lacking, but I've been training her.

this is what it is.
