I would easily suggest the Thrunite TN12 over the PD35 because it's available in a Neutral White tint and has a moonlight mode which is a minimum requirement for what I want in a light. (Both lights have great mode spacing, nearly identical beam patterns, and nearly identical outputs.) If those requirements of mind don't matter to you though then the PD35 will have a little better build quality. There's built-in rechargeable versions of these lights as well, the TC12 & UC35. (Avoid the PD35 2014 version overall.)

The BLF A6 is a great budget light. The QC isn't quite as good as the two brands above but it's a great light for those who want something bright without going broke for the week.

The Atactical A1 is a new & interesting light. Not quite as bright as the others but it looks like it could make a good budget light. Looking at this review, it's interesting how much it looks like Thrunite which it seems like it's actually made by Thrunite based off the beginning portion of the review. Honestly seems like a pretty good light minus it being only a Cool White tint. I didn't realize how cheap it is to get until I saw your link. I might start recommending it more often.

The TH10 isn't bad but it is on the larger size of single 18650 headlamps. Should provide a good throw while having usable spill. Definitely not a great light for close up hands-on work due to the focused beam but seems alright for your needs. I'm just wondering how front heavy it is. The Nitecore HC30 or HC50 might be a little better option though than the TH10.

It's certainly a great light but certainly on the larger size as well. Definitely not pocket friendly. Or not at least with the pants that I wear. Cargo pants pocket might be fine though. You'll be blown away by how bright this guy is.

How loose/tight-fitting is your clothing, and how much do your pockets show beneath your shirt? That's going to affect how large the light can be before you or others notice it. For some people and their style of dress, a light that runs on an 18650 battery wouldn't be noticeable, while others would need a AA or even AAA sized light.

AAA/10440 Lights

If you're interested in not having the light visibly print in your pocket at all, like I was in choosing an EDC, and your clothes are relatively slim fitting, you're probably going to want a AAA/10440 sized light (10440 is the lithium ion version of a AAA sized battery, and produces brighter output but less runtime than a typical AAA alkaline, NiMH, or lithium primary battery).

I went with the Folomov EDC C1. It's got a coated brass body, warm light, and very high CRI (meaning it helps show colors better than low CRI lights). It clips tightly inside the front pocket or coin pocket and takes up very little space. I've been very much enjoying mine without issue, though others have had quality control issues where the emitter burnt out or developed a dead spot, so unless those issues are sorted out, your mileage may vary.

If you want something in the AAA size specifically from Amazon, the Ultratac K18 would probably serve you quite well.

AA/14500 Lights

If you're willing to go up to AA/14500 sized light, the Thrunite Archer 1A V3 might be a good choice. Runs on either AA or 14500 battery. Has a sub-lumen firefly mode for preserving night vision, and goes up to 200 lumens with a AA battery. I don't know how much brighter it would be with a 14500 battery, but you can typically expect two to three times brighter, though with shorter run times. 200 lumens is typically enough for most tasks, though you might appreciate the extra brightness if you were looking around outdoors.

18650 Lights

If you're willing to go up to an 18650 sized light, the Thrunite TC15 would likely be a great choice. It gets incredibly bright for a 1x 18650 light, at up to 2300 lumens, but has well spaced lower modes for everyday use as well. It looks like currently only the cool white version is available on Amazon it. Most people, myself included, prefer neutral to warm white because it looks better, and produces less backscatter in particulates in the air.

I think a little more information about your intended use of the light and how you'd like to carry it would help us make good recommendations. Good luck on the search!

EDIT: Also, another user asked a good question about what you mean by "rechargeable." Do you mean that you just plug the light in without taking the battery out, or do you mean the battery is rechargeable and you can put it in a charger? There are plenty of excellent chargers at places like illumn.com that will open up a whole new realm of possibilities for flashlights, so the small up-front investment is usually worth it.

I wouldn't go for quite the same size. There's not much point to the length, and the weight makes it unwieldy. The thickness is good though. We have what we call soda can lights because they're about the size of a soda can, and I think you'll like that size.

The BLF Q8 sells for around $50. It's a great light. It costs more on Amazon right now, but occasionally it goes on sale. I'll warn that this light was created to work very well in ways that you can't see without taking it apart, and to avoid other lights that look the same because they took a lot of shortcuts that make them perform horribly that can't be fixed without spending more than it would cost to buy a Q8. There's also a Sofirn version of the Q8 that's legit, but it has a colder tint that I recommend against if you want to see rattlers.

The next light I'd look at is the Emisar D18. It's a little skinnier, and twice as expensive, but twice as bright. The best thing about it is the LED options. I've found that rattlers are easier to see with a light that has a slightly rosy tint, so I'd get warm white 3000K LED's. That one also has great CRI, so things will look more natural. I think the D18 would be a better match for you than the Q8.

You'll need batteries and a charger, and you'll need to be careful where you buy batteries. The type of battery you get is a big deal too. The "30Q" is a solid battery. Mtn Electronics is a safe source, and he lists some other batteries that will work at the bottom of the page. Illumn is also a good source. Note that these are button tops. You can find cheaper batteries elsewhere, but they will probably be flat tops that may not make a solid electrical connection.

These two lights will blow you away. They're also side clickies like the Maglite. Honestly, if you've only used that Maglite, then you'll probably be very happy with this Wowtac A1S that only costs $26, and it comes with a battery that can be charged via usb. Make sure you buy the NW version.

I've mentioned tint a couple of times. Even if you don't buy any of these lights, you should pay attention to the tint. Avoid cold white lights. Those are about 6000K or higher. A neutral tint (4000K to 5000K) should be okay. Warm white is around 3000K or lower, and makes the colors on a rattler pop more.

There is a recommendation form in the sidebar we often ask people to fill out and make a top-level post, a lot of us enjoy helping match people to lights. It has info about size, use case, budget, etc.

I don’t know what your budget is, but for size I’m going to recommend a light that uses a single 18650 size rechargeable lithium battery. It’s a nice size to hold in the hand, and the batteries are a really good balance of size to power. They get about 500 recharge cycles, usually cost about $5, and hold the equivalent energy of 5 AA or 8 AAA cells. Since I don’t expect you to have any of these batteries, I’ll give you three good options that include them, and everything you need to run the light.


The cheapest good light that includes a battery is a Wowtac A1s. It’s probably the most-recommended beginner light on here and would serve you quite well. It comes with a special battery that has a micro-usb port built directly in. I don’t know how you could beat it for $26.

A couple dollars more gets you a Sofirn SP32. It has a good user interface with a single side e-switch (which makes it shorter, compared to the Wowtac with its tailswitch) illuminated switch to find it in the dark, and is currently on sale to bring it down to your price point. It uses a more traditional style of battery with an external charger.

For a bit of an upgrade, the Thrunite Neutron 2C is a good value. It has a built-in charging port so you never have to touch the battery, and a nice ramping interface, where instead of set light levels it increases or decreases until you get exactly how much you want.

All that being said, I've changed my opinion a little bit. I know lights without zoom are still more durable and lighter, but I wonder if a zoom light is capable of more throw at lower levels of brightness - this would mean a simple twist, instead of a button press, to see further away and adjust back to normal use, and less battery drain. If anyone has a contact at Wowtac, I'd love to get an A1 and A3, or an A1s and A3s in hand so I could do a side by side comparison and come back with some definitive measurements.

The light is the SP31 V2.0 with XP-L HI in neutral white

First off the packaging is fairly basic. It was a simple Sofirn box without many markings on it to even indicate what kind of light was inside. They just reuse similar packaging across their lights which is fine. I got the combo that includes a battery + 1 bay charger. Came with an instruction manual and fairly standard lanyard, nothing special here.

Next to my smaller 18650 lights such as the Emisar D4 or Jaxman E2L it seems kinda big, but after a day of carrying it there's no issue. I would like to take this moment to praise Sofirn's pocket clip. I personally strongly detest the "deep carry" pocket clips on lights such as the BLF A6 and prefer a simple more robust clip like Sofirn uses that doesn't raise up passed the tailcap. Something about this light that REALLY bugs me is the tailswitch protrudes beyond the lanyard bumps which WILL NOT allow it to tail stand. If you find yourself tailstanding your lights a lot, this may not be for you and is honestly the largest fault I have physically with this light.

Now on to usability and functionality. I really like the forward-clicky switch.I can definitely see why people prefer these. It's very easy to just soft hold it down when you only need a brief burst of light vs needing to fully depress a typical switch. It's honestly not a big deal, but for convenience sake if you're often only using a light to read or check things in short bursts I would recommend a forward clicky. This light has a secondary electronic towards the front and that's solely for changing modes. I also underestimated how nice it is to always have the light turn on at the same brightness I last used, no surprises, just consistency. You can find a brightness you prefer and just only use that. It's simple click to cycle through modes 1-5 then long-press to access strobe/SOS. My only gripe is there is no shortcut to turbo or the lowest mode. The modes also cycle with a fast smooth ramp which is pleasant.

Next is brightness and my thoughts on beam shape. I clocked the light in at level 1(7), level 2(53), level 3(151), level 4(477), level 5(985). This is mostly in-line with what Sofirn claims except for the max brightness of 1200 lumens that they tout. I tested on their own included cell at max brightness and even a Sony VTC5, but wasn't able to crack 1,000 lumens in my tests. As far as throw I can only really speak relative to my other lights and it's certainly throwier than a stock BLF A6 with OP reflector by about 25%~. I was also surprised it out throws Sofirn's own SF36W which has a sizably large reflector(but with XP-L not XP-L HI). The light is definitely throwier than I thought it would be for such a small reflector. You won't be breaking any records, but the hotspot is tight and the spill isn't extremely bright so you could use this to point out things or focus on objects at distances within 65ft/20M. As for tint it's not offensively cool at all, but is a bit cooler than I personally prefer. The positive is that with the XP=L HI there is very little tint shift so it's evenly white lacking an "egg-yolk" corona that I see with a lot of XP-L lights.

Runtimes.. I don't really have much to say here. The max-level stepdown is timed, but there is also mention of thermal sensing? After around 3 minutes at step down the head of the light was only 112F/44C and was still very holdable. It continued at this level for a little over 2 hours until it dropped down briefly before dropping again twice in 20min intervals. The light's indicator LED in the e-switch was full red indicating voltage was low and the output was quite low so I ended the test woth the cell at 3.06 volts. The red indicator turns on below 3.1V and shuts the light off entirely at 3V says the manual.

As per usual I tested the waterproofness lightly. I submerged the light in a little over 1ft/30cm of water for 2 hours exactly and there were no issues this time around. The head seems sealed/glued and I cannot get into it which probably adds to the waterproofness. The o-rings came lubed well and stopped all water ingress. There was no problem with the e-switch either. The only possible problem might be water sneaking around the tail switch boot, but I took a look inside and it was still dry. It passed my test no problem.

My brief thoughts on the charger... It works. Charges around what seems to be 0.5A with a standard micro USB jack. The cell voltage read 4.15V at completion which is good with me. Much rather slightly undercharge than overcharge and damage a cell's life.

Final thoughts... I can see why a lot of people like the forward clicky + e-switch combination. It's very predictable and you don't have to worry about accessing random turbo or strobes. I'm not a big fan of throwers, but the XP-L HI provides very little tint shift and solid throw in a small package. The numbers I tested at max brightness are a little off, but those extra 200 lumens are negligible in my opinion and the light is more than capable at medium ranges even on levels 3 or 4. I really wish the light could tailstand correctly I'm not sure if forward clicky switches are just larger and that wasn't taken into account, or perhaps the switch boot is just too thick where it depresses the switch. Overall if you're looking for a basic starter light with a no-frills predictable modeset, compact throw, and comes with a battery/charger to start an 18650 eco system I'd definitely recommend this light.

I already replied to you in the "schematic" discussion about driver circuits, but I wanted to address your fancy case point as well. Because there's a lot that goes into flashlight bodies and its not just for show. Good flashlight bodies are tightly fitted and machined so they're waterproof and shock-resistant. They're made of a quality material that will stand up to lots of use. Plus they're anodized in a more expensive manner that'll last a lot longer, protecting your investment.

Then you've got the issue of the reflector quality. A cheap laminated-plastic reflector is going to soak up a lot more of your light instead of projecting it outwards. Same goes for a plastic lens instead of some sort of hardened glass. Those things all make the light demonstrably better but cost more.

Heat is also a concern, because high-output emitters generate a lot of heat and the body of the flashlight is the heat sink. If the body isn't massive enough to handle the heat, or your emitter board isn't properly mated to the body somehow to transfer it, you're going to have a problem. That glass lens also comes back into play here as well. An aluminum reflector and glass lens is going to handle all that heat much better than having plastic parts at that end. All those things go into determining how long the light will last.

One more point - good LEDs aren't very expensive. Here's an internet supplier for the Cree XM-L2, probably the most common emitter in high-end lights at the moment. You'd have to click through there a bit to get to prices, but I'll save you the trouble. They're about $7 each, but if you're willing to buy in bulk you can get them down to about $4 each. Buying them already mounted to a board about double the price, but I'm sure most flashlight manufacturers are buying them even cheaper than that. So the money in a high-end flashlight isn't in the LED. Its in the body and the driver circuit.

So here's an example: Here's a cheap $4 flashlight on Amazon. Those things are crazy popular because they're so cheap. And honestly its not a bad little light. Its got a Cree LED, not sure which one so I'm sure its something a bit cheaper than the XM-L2, but still not a bad emitter. And its just really cheaply made, so it won't last very long. Some people like that though. They'll buy them cheap and just replace it when it stops working. That's fine for some people, maybe even for you. I'd rather buy a quality light that'll last a long time, something I can trust to work when I need it to, and I'm willing to pay more for that.

You'll get plenty far with $50! u/PnwStimm has a great suggestion with the Q8 - its about the best bang-for-your-buck light you can get. However, it won't come with the required 4 18650 li-ion cells you need, and that will bump its cost by at least $15-20.

A fairly new light to the scene is the ThruNite TC15, which blasts out an amazing 2300 lumens AND comes with a quality 18650 battery. It isn't an uber-tactical military flashlight, but it has a direct access shortcut to turbo which is something I really enjoy. The UI is very well set up.

If you think he would want to play cop and look the part, you could look into offerings from ArmyTek or Nitecore that look the part (I can help with that if you want to go this route).

So long as you don't laugh at the name, there is another option: my first "real" flashlight was a WOWTAC A1S BSS v2 and it kinda fits the bill - the (removable) strike bezel is absurd, it has a red light filter, and it has an interesting driver that can be controlled from both the e-switch on the side and the tail switch (for normal or "tactical" use). Its served me pretty well, and the 1050 lumens it puts out is absolutely no joke.

EDIT TO ADD: /u/parametrek has an insanely handy website for finding a wide variety of flashlights within specific parameters. Here is a custom search for flashlights/weaponlights under $50 with over 700 lumens (which in my head is pretty farking bright). You may want to dig through these and see if there's anything that catches your eye!

I had similar issues, but in the IT field (squeezing through server racks, etc). For your specific situation, I would recommend a combination of:

• Any single-AA light from a reputable company, that comes with a pocket clip: Thrunite, Fenix, Zebralight, etc. Ditch the lanyard, it will snag.
  
• A super-sturdy tool pouch that is made for abuse. Your light will clip into the pouch, instead of your pocket. Ripoffs brand is my favorite, for reasons below. You can buy their stuff on Amazon, but use their main website to look up the model numbers. CO- is clip-on, and BL- is belt loop.
  
   
  
  A good tool pouch is critical here. Your problem is that the pocket-sized AA lights are designed to clip into a pocket or pouch, not directly to your belt. If clipping directly to a belt, the clip will get bent out of shape, or else it will squeeze itself off of your belt when the light snags on something.
  
   
  
  I like Ripoffs brand because they are super rugged, and designed for daily use in your conditions. The belt clip actually surrounds the belt, so it cannot be pulled off accidentally. I recommend getting a flat, open-ended tool pouch or electrician pouch, for easy reholstering. You don't specifically need a flashlight pouch- it can be anything with the right dimensions. Be wary of 'mini maglite' size, as it may be too skinny.
  
  Models that will likely fit your needs would be:
  
  
• CO-64 or CO-32, for just the light
  
• CO-7, If you want things covered and also have some space for wire cutters / pliers
  

I'll probably get down voted for this but I recommend this small Cree. It fits or clips on you pocket, is super bright for its size & price and has a slide focus which I love. I have one that is on/off and another that is high low strobe. Just make sure you get good 14500 batteries and good charger. The battery life on full brightness isn't very long but the 14500 batteries are the size of AA batteries so I don't notice them extra in my pocket.

Okay. Because of the way physics works, the throw of a flashlight is very dependent on the size of the reflector. If you want high throw, you'll typically have to have a large reflector, which isn't great for EDC. There's one exception to this rule. The Sofirn SP31 V2 is worth checking out. It has a small light source, which also helps with throw. It's a great flashlight, especially for its price. The SP31 V2 should let you see clearly for about 400 feet on its brightest mode. If you don't have experience with high powered flashlights, it'll blow your mind.
If your budget allows for it (what is that by the way?) the Zebralight SC600w Mk IV HI is definitely worth considering. It's very compact and it has a wonderful UI and fantastic build quality. It should let you see clearly for about 500 feet.

Optics are whatever a particular flashlight uses to focus or spread the beam of light - in the case of these multi-emitter lights, it's an acrylic "total internal reflection", or TIR, lens.

Emitters are the light source - the LEDs themselves.

Anyway, I see what you're saying, and it does sound like a 5000K light will suit you nicely, and XP-L HI are very nice emitters. So yeah, do that. All I'm saying is that the ~40% brightness increase going from an SST-20 to an XP-L HI in the same flashlight is actually pretty underwhelming. If you want those emitters, get them in the Fireflies light for the change of pace, and substantially more power on turbo. Or consider a BLF Q8, which is only marginally more powerful than the D4S for the first 30 seconds, but has much better sustained performance than any Emisar or Fireflies light due to being bigger, with better heatsinking and more battery capacity. Or go seriously nuts and grab a Noctigon Meteor, which is brighter than any of these lights initially, and should maintain brightness better than at least the D4S and E07 (but probably not the Q8).

I have this light in my EDC rotation and it's great. Only thing that is slightly inconvenient is the twisty head, but with a little practice it can be used one handed.

I also have the Nitecore EC1 in my rotation and I like it a lot as well. It's a little bigger but has more settings and a much nicer interface.

EDIT I haven't seen this suggested yet. If you want a good intro to higher end flashlights without breaking the bank try one of these. We use them at work as beater lights and they are amazing for the price. They are also a good way to cheaply demonstrate how all flashlights are not created equal.

That should get you started. I don't own any of those suggested lights (though I do own a Zebralight and quite like it). I recommend a neutral white tint (4000-5000K) and ideally high CRI (shows colors better, could be important as an ele-chicken...is that a black or green wire?!)

I just got the FordEx version of this for $6.49 with prime shipping (leaving town and couldn't wait). It's pretty nifty, seems brighter than my ~100lumen black diamond storm headlamp.

There are a bunch of versions, even just on amazon, so I'm not sure if FordEx is the best one but it seems to be the most popular. Mine only has one mode (high), not the high/low/strobe modes some reviewers mention. Seems to be luck of the draw which version you get.

You've correctly identified it as junk. Good.

If you really want a zoomie, check out the Wowtac A3S, but we tend to recommend fixed-focus lights for most applications. They're more durable, more waterproof, and have more efficient optics. The duty lights section of the arbitrary list of popular lights has some options that may work well for security work.

I recently picked a Lumintop Tool AA 2.0 for many of reasons you describe here.

Looked for something small and light enough that can be attached to a baseball cap, yet, bright enough to be used for camping, night hikes, around the house and on the bedside stand.

It turned out as a great little light for my needs, very bright with Eneloop batteries and can be used with 14500 and Alkaline, which are available everywhere in case I run out of spare power.

Tail switch operation with very simple and easy UI, mode memory, hidden strobe, reversible clip that can be attached to a cap, and a silicone diffuser which makes it great for lighting up a tent or an 'in the wild' dinner setup.

As for the weight, it's actually lighter than the AA Eneloop battery that is used to power it.

I carry the Lumintop Tool 2.0 AA and love it. I don’t use the 14500 since I want a low mode that’s not 16 lumens, but other than that I love the light and the ~250lm turbo on a NIMH battery is all I need. We like to fool ourselves thinking we need 1,000 lumens for EDC, and while I do carry a larger 18650 light with almost 1,300 lumens, which is nice to have but realistically, 250-300lm is probably good enough for most of my purposes.

I agree with the Wowtac A2S/Convoy S2+ suggestion, and will add a link for the Convoy S2+ suggestion. The older Convoy S2+ have worse UIs, the SST-20 LED models are all new and it's a pretty decent LED anyway. Unless you have a real strong preference towards blue tinted lights, if you go that route get the 4000k and either 6 7135 or 8 7135. More 7135 is more brightness, faster battery drain.

If you really want AA, look into the Lumintop Tool AA, although it takes 14500 (3.7V AA sized batteries) also, for more brightness. There's a bundle version on amazon with a 14500 with micro-USB charging built in. It's LED is not as good and I'd only suggest this if you really want small.

On charging 18650s (or 14500s): A 12v cigarette to USB adapter would work, with the note that you shouldn't charge your lithium-ion batteries in a hot vehicle, as it degrades the battery life. You also shouldn't store them in freezing weather and plan on using it, as it just won't work well until it warms up.

Decent portable chargers: Nitecore F1 will charge lithium batteries and can act as a powerbank.
Olight Universal Charger can charge most things and is pretty foolproof.

My ThruNite TN12 2016 edition is not exactly cutting edge but has a lovely natural tint and is much cheaper than the competition at $40. I also wanted the EDC size without loosing the "tactical" endcap switch and with 1000 lumens it was just the perfect combination of price and performance for me.

I got both of those lights for under $40. The left one is an Emisar D1 mini thrower. I just got it this week and I love it. It has a good flood but not sports worthy, I would suggest the $65 BLF Q8 (largest, 4th from right in bottom picture) or $100 Emisar D18 at for that. The light on the right is a Nitecore P30. The P stands for precision. It's a fairly long range thrower and can light stuff up at 500 yards easily. I got it on sale for $35 but it's typically around $60. There is no flood for sports either. Both the D1 and P30 are 18650 powered throw lights but pocketable. You might like the BLF Q8 because it can be belt pouch carried or back pocket or jacket pocket carried. It also has a threaded spot for camera tripod mounts and would be great for camping and sports. It will require you to buy 4 high drain 18650 button top batteries and a charger.

If you want brighter and with longer runtime, you will have to ditch AAA batteries.
18650 battery is the ‘industry standard’. A great option is to buy Convoy S2+. Quality components, great emitters (LEDs), compact size - all for under $20. Add 2 batteries with charger and you are still under $50 limit.

If you are not really interested in doing research on this topic, check out the sticky post - arbitrary list of flashlights, divided by categories. Simply pick whatever you like most from that list. Thrunite TN12 would be something that might fit your requirements and comes with rechargeable battery and holster, so you don’t have to worry about anything.

Sofirn SP31 v2.0 is similar to the Wowtac A1S (dual switch but XP-L HI LED, so it's throwier). The low is 5lm. It's overpriced in Amazon, you can get it cheaper at AliExpress. Edit: Another option is the Sofirn SP32A v2.0, it allows you to choose between the fixed modes and ramping, but as it's side switch only you should use either electronic or mechanical lockup to prevent accidental activation.

Another option is the Thorfire VG15S (tail-switch only). Its XM-L2 LED is not the newest but it's still bright and the flashlight has a 0.5lm moonlight, the bundled battery is not bad and it isn't too expensive. The XP-L used in the Wowtac is pretty much a miniaturized version of the XM-L2 to fit in smaller spaces, they are very similar in performance.

I just recently bought the ThruNite TN12. I'd definitely recommend it. It's tough, not too big, fits in a pocket, especially with the metal belt clip. It's got a few easy to manage settings, no incredibly complicated clicky system or twisting and it auto turns on to the last used setting so all it takes is one click. It also has the option to hold the on button half down for quick use. It runs on an 18650 which I would buy from Orbtronic if I were you, that's where I got mine. What are your shelters for? Can you give us any more details on your situation?

Without knowing much about what you really need, I would recommend you look at the Thrunite Archer 1A. You can get it on Amazon for about $30. It runs on 1 AA battery, it's bright, small, easy to use, and it has a very low mode that can provide a small amount of light for 1-2 weeks.

One more thing: do NOT rely on alkaline batteries for your emergency kits. They tend to leak after a while and may damage other items in the process. Invest in some Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA (L91) cells for your kits. Yes, they're more expensive, but they won't leak and they have a great shelf life.

Going forward, I’d say go with smaller prizes. My reasoning is that the larger the prize the more us non-americans get screwed by shipping/taxes. Never heard of the light, wouldn't trust it or the battery that comes with it. May not have low voltage protection.

Honestly, I fell in love with the Nitecore NU25 Plenty bright, lasts a long time, has the high CRI option and is very small so it doesn't hit things when you are sticking your head back behind a strut assembly.

The Thrunite TN12 and Nitecore MH 10 are both good value for money, and if you want to max out your budget I love my Armytek Wizard Pro for its angled lense, magnetic base and drop / waterproof design. If you are a plumber I assume it can happen that your light gets wet at some point so that might be something to consider.

The Thrunite Archer 1A is a nice light with great mode spacing, its high is bright enough for auxilliary lighting under the stairs for sheetrocking. The 2x AA model suffers from a huge gap between 75 and 500 lumens, which imo is unsuitable for a light of this caliber.

What battery are you using and what are you pointing it at? The materials most likely to actually burn are dark clothing or black paper. Receipt paper that has been blacked out with a marker can ignite in seconds. But that demands a high discharge battery, like a 30Q.

That said, look into the SP36. Same UI as the FW3A so it has the fun blinky modes, 5000+ lumens, high CRI, USB C charging, and affordable. It’s pretty great. Give it these batteries for good performance. You can get batteries with higher discharge, but the heat makes sustained output at those extreme levels impractical. 30Qs will get you melted plastic and scorched pants while still keeping decent capacity.

Under $4, light, small, pretty powerful for a little AA light. Bought some recently to stash around the house and the kids love them. My son loves the strobe mode on the 3-mode version, but be aware that the 3-mode remembers the next function, depending on the light you get. If the size and weight are acceptable, the Convoy C8+ is going to be hard to beat.

If you want something a bit more slim, the ThruNite TN-12, WowTac A1S, Emisar D1, or the Nitecore P12 are decent options.

At that price range, there's not a lot out there. I would just grab one of these while you save for something a little more purpose-built.

This is also fairly cool. It would fit in your glove box and stand up in lantern mode if you needed an area light to change a tire. They're not "the best for the money" out there. Many would comment that you're wasting your money on them, but I've used one and they seem truthful in terms out output and battery life - and that's more than many lights out there can say.

Anything else, I'm going to need some more info to make a more educated guess on.
