I am not a scientist, I am a historian, however... if you would like to know some academic titles that go to the route of the problem I can suggest Coming Out Under Fire and Gay New York. Neither book is directly about the now debunked decision that homosexuality was a mental disorder but both make multiple references to it and Coming Out Under Fire is a book that deals with some of the immediate backlash of that not-so-scientific, scientific claim.

the short version of the history here though is that in 1952 it was put into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders from the APA. This was a political move and a result of 60 years of cultural shift. What had happened since 1890 is really the birth of a gay identity. Until this time, people had discussed homosexuality in obscure medical contexts or works like Krafft-Ebing's work Psychopathia Sexualis with Especial Reference to the Antipathic Sexual Instinct: A Medico-Forensic Study (1886) which concluded that it was a degeneration and talked about it more like a fetish. Later in his life after more work on the subject he retracted that hypothesis. A bit later Havelock Ellis and John Symonds came along. Their work concluded that Homosexuality was definitely not a disease but instead variation of sexuality. Then in 1948 the first Kinsey Report came out in which he definitively stated "Males do not represent two discrete populations, heterosexual and homosexual." The findings of his research was that sexuality is a range, its not black and white. This was all well before the APA's ruling.

Shortly after the ruling the work of Evelyn Hooker, The Adjustment of the Male Overt Homosexual came out which determined that homosexuals could be perfectly well adjusted humans. The next Kinsey Report came out in 1953 and with that he once again concluded that sexuality was not black and white. According to him 37% of males and 13% of females had some sort of homosexual experience to orgasm in their lifetime. So to say somebody was exclusively heterosexual would be difficult.

Further supporting evidence of the political or social nature of the initial decision can be see in the APA's decision to remove it from their list of mental disorders. Stonewall has happened in 1969 and the entire gay liberation and gay rights movement has become very visible in media and in the public eye. Probably because of this, when the decision was made to remove it as an officially classified disorder it was also accompanied with a statement from the APA that supported the civil rights of homosexuals.

Oh my...so hard to choose one. But hands down, top five(ish) (more or less in order):

  • The Producers (1968) - Mel Brooks' first work is still his greatest.

  • Metropolis - the original sci-fi film. A beautiful and terrible Art Deco future. If you watch it, actively seek out the "Complete Edition" with re-recorded orchestral score. So many movies have drawn from this well--Star Wars, Blade Runner, The Matrix...and too many others to list.

  • Adam - A beautiful film. A love story. Not a Rom-Com. And Hugh Dancy stars, though that's just a bonus, and not what drew me.

  • Thank You For Smoking and In The Loop - two wonderful and dark political satires, though the latter is significantly darker.

  • Company (2006) - Not strictly a "movie", but a recording of a live Broadway performance of one of Stephen Sondheim's brilliant works. Some of my favorite music and lyrics from any show.

  • The Muppet Movie - No explanation needed, I assume?

David Levithan is probably one of the most main-stream queer-themed writers out there now. His books, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and Boy Meets Boy are some of his staple books. But these are clearly directed at a teen audience (which isn't a bad thing)

However, one of my favorites of his is The Lover's Dictionary which presents a love story that doesn't use gender pronouns, so you can interpret it to be any love you want. It is amazing.

I'm midway though The Great North Road by Peter F. Hamilton (in audiobook form). It's pretty great so far. He's a masterful worldbuilder and of of my favorite Sci Fi writers.

I've also been enjoying the Monster Hunter series by Larry Correia. Its quite the guilty pleasure of a modern fantasy.

It's not a series or anything, but I HIGHLY recommend reading Not myself these days. It's very entertaining and an easy read, but it gets dark and deep. I was laughing and then crying then laughing again.

Thanks for the reply I really enjoyed the article. I am already doing many of the things suggested in the article, but I do need to get better about pre workout snacks. I too often put off eating before a workout because I'm prepping for a big meal afterwards. I'm a big fan of http://www.amazon.com/Optimum-Nutrition-Standard-Natural-Chocolate/dp/B000GIQT06/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1323805198&sr=8-2 for shakes. Thanks again for the support.

My boyfriend got me a ROCCAT Ryos MK Pro, a new University of Kentucky hoodie, some of my favorite foods, storage containers for the kitchen (because I'm a goon) and a lovely sweater among a few smaller things. More importantly he met my family, which went super well and they adored him too. It was kind of a big deal to me.

I bought a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS-X and I enjoy it. I couldnt justify a 100+ device. I got mine on sale at like 35 bucks but still, hard to beat 50 as well. Also yeah I've been keeping tabs on the game. I kind of went into it expecting the X series but with multiplayer, which is totally my fault but may explain my disappointment. If you've never heard of the X series and youre interested, may I recommend checking out X3: Terran Conflict? This game is a great example of a space sim sandbox. You can control fleets of ships, run an empire, build space stations, set up your own army or a space trading company. Capital ships are a thing too. There is a story as well.

Speaking of Elite, I'm not so sure how I feel about the engineers RNG update. Seems like more time sinks while there's already enough of those.

Have you considered buying a pair of regular headphones and a cheap mic separately? You'll propably get a better more balanced sound from the headphones and I honestly doupt that any $50 headset is going to have a fantastic mic. Sennheiser HD-201's are a decent pair for their price. And I'm quite sure something like this will work as a mic just fine.

> So how did you get so much in?

Easiest way to get in that much lube is with one of those piston water guns.

> What did it feel like?

Feels awesome. Very filling. A feeling that is hard to describe. I am a skinny dude, so it makes me look fat. Also, makes taking other things much easier because the lube holds things open a bit.

> Did you push the lube out onto someone's face?

Yes.

Okay, here's what you do.

Get a six-gallon, food-safe plastic bucket, with a lid with a small (like, quarter-inch) circular hole in it. You'll also need an s-shape airlock to put in the little hole. Get five gallons of apple juice from the grocery store, and a packet of wine yeast.

Clean the bucket with a 1% bleach solution (...the other 99% water) and rinse thoroughly. Add apple juice and yeast to the bucket, seal with the lid and airlock. Wait three to four weeks.

During this time, also get 48 empty beer bottles (you can use your own empties if you drink enough), and enough beer bottle caps. You'll also want a capper -- there are cheaper and harder-to-use options.

After the three to four weeks of fermentation, open the bucket and add about half a cup of sugar (corn sugar works best), and stir it in. Fill the bottles using either the spout on the bucket or a siphon hose, leaving a half- to three-quarters-inch of air at the top of each bottle.

Let the bottles sit a couple weeks to condition (carbonate), then refrigerate and enjoy. The dryness of the resulting cider will be based on which yeast you chose, so if you want a sweet cider use a white wine yeast, and if you want ultra-dry cider, use champagne yeast.

yeah actually after further looking into the jelly fish lamps, this page seems like a scam... i'm removing the link and posting an actual one... there seems to be a small online debate about whether they use real elly fish or just use the bodies for molds but either way its pretty cool and if it is ust a mold i guess you could say it's more ethical with the same effect :).... but they are sold, following links are backing this up... 1 2 3 and where you can actually buy them

Well, since it's been only a couple of weeks, I think your best best is something simple and not too try hard. Does he have all the Zombie Apocalypse survival guides? Why don't you try getting him a how to survive if civilization ends book? There are tons of those.

Alternatively, here's a zombie trekkie book that got good reviews. He might get a kick out of it:

Late to the thread, but I think it's worth mentioning Arthur C. Clarke's Imperial Earth. The main character is not gay, but mentions having romantic relationships with men and women - the book mentions in passing that bisexuality to some extent is the norm at that time. That was quite a thing to suggest in 1976 (when it was published).

It's also an excellent read if you're into sci-fi, so there's that ;)

This may sound really silly but I /highly/ recommend this book It's Called A Breakup Because It's Broken

It's funny, and charming, and realistic and uplifting all at the same time.

There's also Gay New York, by the gay history professor I've mentioned.
