(man, price keeps creeping up; got mine for a little over a hundred during a christmas sale)

It plugs into your OBDII and monitors your mpg real time as well as nearly every other thing your onboard computer keeps track of from throttle position to battery voltage (not necessary for you!) to DFCO. I used it a lot when my radiator was fucked to make sure I wasn't overheating since I don't trust the dash dial that always seems to stay in the same place no matter what.

Also doubles as a code reader which has come in handy more than once.

Great for not only hypermiling, but just to see how stuff you do affects your car and mpg, which will help you drive more efficiently regardless of your driving style. Really anybody with an interest in what their car is doing at any given time will love this tool. Makes commuting a game to try and beat your mpg high score.

Re: air flow sensor: it's probably fine! Pretty sure it'd be throwing some codes. What's probably happening is you can do better with your driving efficiency! Just driving with load and going the speed limit will make a world of difference.

Oh, if you've got a V6, then you will probably never hit my 4-cylinder numbers, but you should be able to get close. Probs 1-2mpg less.

I save roughly $250/year, which doesn't sound like a ton, but I'm about 20% more efficient and I rationalize the money saved as paying for both Netflix and Amazon Prime. Just by driving the speed limit and more efficiently, I'm getting those two subscriptions for "free"!

Definitely don't do the extreme hypermiling all the time though. I still like to have fun and be comfortable when I'm not experimenting. You'd be amazed at how much gas you'll save just by slowing down. Doesn't even lose you much time either. Speeding is so overrated! Coming from a guy who used to be a white-knuckle speed demon!

With oil futures skyrocketing, maybe driving efficiently in the coming months isn't such a bad idea ;)

Razor: I started with this Merkur razor (and I'm still using it after two years). Edwin Jagger is probably equally popular, but I haven't tried them.

Brush/bowl: I was given this bowl/soap/brush/holder kit as a gift and still use it, but the brush broke after about a year (I could probably fix it with some good glue but haven't bothered yet. The holder is nice, but you might be able to find just a brush and bowl separately slightly cheaper if you're on a budget. I didn't use the soap in the kit because:

Soap: Proraso soap was suggested and I ended up liking it a lot. Some people like to buy sampler packs of soap/cream as well, but this was good enough for me, and it would take me forever to get through samples. This Proraso got me through 15 months with an average of one shave per week.

Blades: I started out with a sampler pack of blades from Maggard Razors, and Gillette Silver Blue and Gillette 7 O'Clock (both yellow and green were the same to me) ended up being the easiest on my face. I tried Feather, but they were way too harsh at first, I think because I hadn't really gotten the technique down yet. Gillette was more forgiving, but once I got better at shaving, I was able to use Feathers.

Other: Lastly, I really like using an alum stick after shaving to help close up pores/tiny nicks (weepers), but they're not necessary. I also now use Shave Secret as a first layer when I start my second pass (against the grain). Again, not necessary, but I think it helps me personally a little to have that extra layer of protection to prevent razor burn. It does gunk up your razor a little, though, so just be sure to keep it clean.

--------------------------

I still only shave once a week, and I have a 3 day minimum in between shaves, otherwise I'll still get razor burn. Read up on some info in /r/wicked_edge. /u/Leisureguy has a ton of great comments in that sub. Sort his comment history by top, and you'll get plenty of good advice right off the bat. He also has a blog. My best tips: Make sure you use a shallow angle (as opposed to the perpendicular/90-degree shave you're used to with cartridge razors), and don't let your lather be too dry. Also, if your area has hard water, consider using distilled water to make your lather. Maggard Razors has been really great at shipping fast and having good prices for me and carries everything I mentioned, but there several reputable online shops. I know lots of people prefer to use Amazon, so I linked everything on Amazon except the blade sampler pack.

Some links below. There's a vegan subreddit you may want to look at as well. I'm 43 yo female - being 95% vegan keeps me so healthy and fit (I exercise too). I always get compliments on how I look. It's a great lifestyle!

These aren't vegan, but I enjoy Morningstar Farms Hot and Spicy sausage patties. Their corn dogs and Grillers Prime burgers are really good too. Low cal/fat and high in protein!
https://www.morningstarfarms.com/products.html

Amy's has some great breakfast bowls. You can buy the sausage separately, too. Lots of protein! I eat this for dinner all the time:
https://www.amys.com/our-foods/breakfast-scramble

Lots of Amy's are vegan. You should be able to buy MFarms and Amys at your grocery store. Amys makes all kinds of pastas and rice bowls that are great.

From Amazon I get this coconut milk. I find it's creamiest and foams up great for lattes. I haven't found any unsweetened milks (almond, soy, coconut, etc) that I like.
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B004FI97RU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I discovered this AMAZING jerky recently. It's expensive but DANG it tastes just like real BBQ!!! I am addicted. You can get it on Amazon but it's cheaper from their website - free shipping if you get a case.
https://www.louisvilleveganfoods.com/

I want to learn how to make it. Found this recipe that looks pretty easy. You can get soy curls from Amazon too.
http://www.instructables.com/id/VEGAN-JERKY/

I buy Amy's lentil soup by the case. Good protein.

https://smile.amazon.com/Amys-Soups-Golden-Lentil-Ounce/dp/B0048KKKVC/ref=sr_1_11_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1504627250&sr=8-11&keywords=amys+lentil

I recently read this book called Anti-Cancer that changed my life. Author said that 70% chocolate is about the only sweet thing that's good for you. I get whole grain bread from local bakery. I break some 70% chocolate bar on a piece and toast it in toaster oven until chocolate melts. Sounds weird but it's so yummy!!

Daiya cheddar slices are good when cooked in a recipe: https://daiyafoods.com/

Best vegan mayo for salads and sandwiches: https://followyourheart.com/vegenaise-eggless-mayonnaise-old/

Best vegan butter: https://earthbalancenatural.com/product/original-buttery-spread/

Should be able to get these at whole foods or grocery.

One more thing! I eat this all the time. People say tofu is gross but...it's just soybeans! (Not as gross as dead flesh IMHO.) Chop up some extra firm tofu and toss with carrot shreds, avocado chunks, orange slices, and peanut sauce. It's sooooo good and healthy and easy!

u/Dunkaduck · 7 pointsr/gifs

It's actually really easy. Beans + rice or beans + corn and you have a complete protein. I eat tacos, burritos, Thai, Indian (vegan curry), black bean burgers, and stir fry all the time. I thought all vegans were hungry skellies too before I gave it a shot, and it turns out it's really cheap and easy. It is only ever difficult to eat vegan at restaurants because everything seems to have milk or cheese, but I am doing the best I can and don't sweat the small stuff. My BF eats meat but these days at home he doesn't bother because he loves my cooking.

Edit: If anybody is interested in the nutrition of a plant-based diet or would like to try some delicious recipes, I would highly recommend

  1. Vegan for Life which is written by two registered dietitians. This book discusses how to feed yourself properly and what vitamins you need (looking at you B12) to make a vegan lifestyle sustainable.

  2. Thug kitchen Is a funny, no-nonsense book which showcases a lot of delicious recipes which I use every week

  3. Some documentaries that I really enjoy sharing which are available on Netflix are:

  • cowspiracy - the environmental impact of consuming meat and meat products

  • Forks Over Knives - discusses nutrition and the effects of consuming animal products and oil and the links between these products and cancer. Big focus on the China Study

  • Food Matters - another nutrition one.

I want to point out that the last two really push the message that 'FOOD CURES ALL' and that is a bit of an extreme message imo. A good diet certainly leads to good health, but modern medicine exists for a reason.

It sounds like she has a great support from you! If it’s any encouragement I’m 25 and she’s already leaps and bounds ahead of me in making a smooth, creative animation.

She may be too young for now, but if you’re interested in helping her along, you can buy a relatively cheap digital art tablet (Here’s the one I got ) that comes with free art software (I currently work with ClipStudioPaint) and plugs right up to a laptop or PC.

If she can do something that impressive with her 3DS then I’m sure access to more impressive tools and software could really let her skills bloom. The hardest part would be getting used to the new software but there are great online tutorials on YouTube for help!

Hope you guys continue to have fun with it!

Do note that the practice will vary depending on whether you are practicing in the US or UK&I or Middle East etc, but my favourite/most useful reference books while learning in Ireland (and ten years later, I'm always still learning!) are:

Emma Ford - Falconry Art and Practice,

Jemima Parry-Jones - Training Birds of Prey

Jemima Parry-Jones - Falconry

Depending on what you are looking up, each of these books were useful. Ford provides great diagrams and instructions for making one's own equipment, whereas Parry-Jones provides excellent insight on the ethics of treatment and psychology of birds, as well as great blueprints for mews design.

For an absolute beginner, who has never handled a bird, perhaps you would be interested in
James McKay - Practical Falconry
This book gives a really unassuming and friendly introduction to the practice of falconry - with fantastic instructions and images, without swamping the reader in too many confusing details. At usually only about $15.00 on eBay etc, this is usually the book I'd recommend to people in your position.

Enjoy!

Are you male or female? If female, I may have some suggestions for you. I've found a few little things that are really helpful. I desperately wish that I'd discovered them years ago before I lost half of my hair volume.

Followup: Hello ladies!

I did some research into female hair loss (reading published medical journal articles, etc.) and found out some of the skinny.

Most female hair loss is related to hormones (Sigh. Isn't everything?) and so to change the loss pattern the hormone receptors in the scalp must be targeted.

For me it is a combination of peri-menopause, being a chubby bunny and extreme stress. The body fat thing is actually quite interesting. Fat cells make and store estrogen, and excess estrogen is converted to androgens by the body, leading to Androgenic Alopecia, ie, Lady Balding.

So how to tackle?

The first and most significant thing that I did was get this nifty shampoo .

Within the first week I noticed a significant lessoning of hair loss (I was coming up with lots in the shower and while brushing. ). I was so excited that I started using the shampoo as sort of a leave-in mask overnight and wash it out in the morning.

I applied it to the "Jean-Luc Picard" area of the scalp, ie the front and top of the head that you see on balding men as those are the most sensitive to the hormonal signals, and ignored the hair itself; remember, hair is dead and there is no point wasting expensive product on something that cannot be changed.

As the shampoo was working so well I went ahead and sprang for this . It's pretty pricy, but based on my research it really does have the most bang for the buck. Again, I use it only on the scalp, and then I use a regular conditioner on the hair itself. It's not greasy at all and doesn't leave the scalp or hair feeling heavy or lank. (As an aside, it is one of the few products that contain caffeine, which has been proven to stimulate hair growth. And the caffein has to be topical. Sorry- a Starbucks Trenta won't work.)

Next, I thought about strengthening the hair itself through better care and found out that using plastic brushes and combs actually weakens and damages hair, leading to breakage and splitting. In the manufacturing process of plastic hair implements molten plastic is forced into a mold and when the plastic has cooled, the mold pulls apart to reveal the bristles/teeth. The means that each and every part has a tiny but significant seam where the two halves of the mold met. This seam acts just like a dull blade and shears along the side of the hair as it passes through, thinning and damaging the shaft. Not cool.

The three best choices for hair brushes/combs are a wooden bristle hairbrush (get the German one; they are better quality), a wide tooth wooden comb , and a boar bristle brush.

Now, if you're going hard core, you can also try microneedling . It increases effectiveness of any scalp application and also just helps to increase blood flow, which in turn gives more nourishment to the hair roots. I'm not gonna lie- it's ouchy, but not unbearably so, and the tenderness fades in a day or so. I do it one a week or so to help with the penetration of the stuff I've spent so much damn money on!

And there's always Rogain/Minoxidil. It's over the counter and they have it at Target. They make both a male and female strength, so read the label.

With all of this stuff I have seen a significant improvement, both in keeping the hair I have and in new growth. I have a weird but wonder layer of about two-inch long baby hairs filling in all over now, and by baby I mean new, not weirdly fine or something. This crap really works!

There are a few more little things, like de-stressing and taking multi-vitamins, plus there is a low-dose old-school blood pressure medication called Aldactone that helps interrupt the DHT receptors and so is good for hair loss, acne, and is a diuretic, so helps with bloating. Your doc may be willing to proscribe as it is sometimes used to treat our other favorite problem, Lady Beards!

Hope that this was helpful, and good luck!

In 1927, Rhodes, the company behind the Kriss Kross Stropper razor blade sharpener demonstrated in the OP, boasted in their ads that (a customer testimonial reported) their product "GIVES 1500 KEEN SHAVES!" from a single resharpended blade - then a couple of years later their ads claimed "MORE THAN 29 KEEN SHAVES A MONTH WITHOUT COST", clarifying in the blurb that although a full month of shaves from a single blade could easily be achieved, 45 shaves per blade was more typical and they had "many cases on record" testifying that 100+ shaves was possible. Either way, the prospect of extreme blade longevity must have been attractive in the post-WWI recession and Great Depression times that bookended that decade, and made a nice gift for dad (even from himself to himself) in the more prosperous years between.

That said, given that razor blades cost 5 cents to 10 cents back then, one has to wonder how economical these blade stropping devices really were, i.e. how many blades could have been bought for the cost of the stopper? The Kriss Kross ads never mention price, and the devices were promoted a "send for more details"/try-before-you-buy scheme.

Today, modern double-edge (DE) razor blades can still be bought for $0.10 each and while many men who shave daily with a modern or vintage safety razor say blades are so cheap they replace them out of habit after a couple or three shaves, a single blade can easily achieve 10, 20, or even 30 full shaves done in complete comfort and to ultimate closeness. Some people, myself included, toss a DE blade only when its performance degrades and efficiency is compromised — so with good shaving technique and razor blade care but absolutely no special maintance such as stopping, it's possible to sometimes get double the aforementioned number of shaves or even beyond that. My personal best is 71 days (cost: $0.23), and I've got 60 out of another brand that happened to cost $0.10 each. But others report having gone far higher, getting 100 shaves+ from a single DE blade.

Modern single-edge blades (that go in single-edge safety razors) are thicker, wider and considerably more expensive than DE blades, perhaps $1ea depending on brand, but are generally more durable on the low-use-count average and are still more economical than most refillable multiblade cartridges. Close shaves and a relatively high number of uses is also possible but because of their comparatively higher cost and lone shavable edge vs the DE's two, modern single-edge razors are obscure, ranking very low on the shaving implement popularity scale.

My point: as long as inexpensive modern single- and double-edge razor blades for traditional wet shaving are still manufactured somewhere in the world and can be purchased online, any modern reissue of a SE or DE razor blade sharpener similar to Kriss Kross would have to be priced extremely inexpensively in order to gain any degree of popularity. And that means its cost to manufacture and distribute would need to be so low that it relied on high sales volume to make enough profit to make it all worthwhile. That's totally unrealistic... we have far more options for shaving today than back in the 1920s.

So until or unless the long-predicted and long-feared SHAVEPOCALYPSE happens (when production of DE and SE blades is ended for good as evil conglomerates force higher-profit/shorter life multiblade cartridges onto the third world countries where safety razor use is currently still the norm) and due to subsequent product scarcity we revert to an age of artificially over-extending product lifespan once more, the market is simply too small for this. And that's a shame. For now, we're living in a throw-away/throw-our-money-away-needlessly society, and we have no need for such useful things.

Alright, so actually 7-11 has two store brand watermelon candies, one that is rings, and one that is sour wedges. Both are honestly up there with the best watermelon candies I've had, which tripped me out because it's a convenience store brand (protip their coconut water is from Brazil and uses coconuts that don't have the weird nutty after taste, so that's awesome too)

Jelly belly jelly beans in watermelon flavour is awesome, I love to go to the bulk barn and get a big ol' bag of only the watermelon flavoured ones.

I used to love the jolly ranchers watermelon but that's kind of depreciated in quality over the years imo (not sure why).

Bubbalicious watermelon gum is fantastic for 5 seconds, and generally most watermelon gums are pretty great, but I'm not a fan of the ones with aspartame, because aspartame clashes weirdly with the flavour in a way that sucralose doesn't.

Watermelon air heads you can roll up and use as the best straw ever for watermelon drinks. I like to mix watermelon juice, watermelon vodka, and drink it with a rolled up watermelon air head. Some people might say that I'm going too far there, but I say to those people, that maybe they aren't going too far enough.

There's a lot of really obscure name brands that I love, but I only ever find them once so I can never recall the name of them. With online ordering, I should really remember though...

This right here though: https://www.amazon.ca/LorAnn-Super-Strength-Watermelon-Flavouring-dram/dp/B00016V2DC that shit is like crack. You can use it in everything (sparingly), and have watermelon flavoured EEEEEEEEEVERYTHIIIING.

Huskies, especially when young - require a lot of engagement to avoid the behaviors that people would associate with a bad dog/badly trained dog (chewing, using the bathroom inside, barking/howling incessantly, and other attitude problems). It's important that you give them things to do every day both physically and mentally, sticking to a schedule will help everyone involved - the dog will know something is coming and can wait instead of flipping out.

They're very smart dogs, work on obedience training (if you've never done this before, look for a local trainer and take some classes or buy a book - Training the Best Dog Ever is a decent little book by the person who trained Obama's dog among others - it focuses entirely on positive reinforcement, and then there are things like 101 dog tricks.)

Get them toys, use a puzzle feeder for meals, take them on as many walks as you feel like you can and reinforce the proper behaviors you want on every walk.

Huskies are working dogs, and like working dogs (and most all dogs) they want to know their job/role in the pack, trust you and your decisions, and do things that make you happy. They are your number one fan, and always down to ride or die.

^^^dog ^^^tax

tl;dr take it on walks a lot, play with it, positive reinforcement for behaviors you want it to continue, don't hit it or yell at it for 'bad' behaviors, make sure it has physical/mental things to engage it every day and it'll be your best friend for the rest of its life.
