Physiology PhD. Armando Hasudungan for the basics. Once you watch all of those videos you can move on to the Vanders books. They're slim books but comprehensive. Find them on Amazon for like $20. You can finish a book in a few weeks if you're committed. Dont worry about buying the most up to date edition...our understanding of physiology doesnt change all that much year to year.

Ketotarian: The (Mostly)... https://www.amazon.com/dp/0525537171?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
This book is amazing. I’m not vegetarian but was feeling like I wasn’t eating enough vegetables in my normal Keto Diet. It’s really sciencey in the beginning which I really like and then has lots of veggie recipes that I never would have thought of on my own.

this book has some good info on salt but you can just search youtube with the authors name and he has some good interviews where he drops some very interesting electrolyte knowledge

Besides the books rabbit_agency mentioned, there's The Great Cholesterol Con too.

This forum thread has many references about cholesterol, saturated fat and heart disease.

Interesting... I've recently seen allulose for sale on Amazon and have read some good things about its taste. I believe it also has a glycemic index of zero.

Looks like allulose might be one of the best sugar alternatives for low carb lifestyles.

Edit: https://www.amazon.com/All-u-Lose-Natural-Sweetener-Allulose-Crystalline/dp/B06XMQWXK2/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1510092069&sr=1-1&keywords=allulose (for anyone curious... they also make syrups)

I can't answer specifically, because I honestly don't know other than reading that eating vegetables is best for their nutrient density and quality of nutrients. Off the top of my head I cant think of any good scientific studies for this other than some books I have read on eating and what is best to eat along with several youtube channels with content provided by doctors, and many various online sources of what is best to eat.

My sources for my own personal eating are here:

This does include fish protein, but my understanding is you can get all the protein you need from plant matter, and you dont really need to eat any meat. (but you would need a source of B12, which may tell us that veganism may not be the best way to eat).

Also, I wanted to mention that human teeth dont seem to be made for eating meat. They seem to be made for eating plant matter.

Like /u/junkbot said Bob's red mill potato starch is something like 80% RS. That's really good and if you're using a few TBSP you'd only get a few extra carbs.

Whole foods? No I agree, barely any compared to the amount of carbs in them.

Richard D. Moore wrote The High Blood Pressure Solution ages ago. I just ignored the demonization of fat and praise for Kempner's rice diet.

I never had blood pressure issues and never salted my food. Then when the Volek and Phinney books came out I started adding salt and olive oil and Kerrygold (Irish) butter to my low-carb diet. That's when my docs started telling me my blood pressure was high.

Of course I was also getting older, which itself can associated with hypertension. Moore was a physicist and an MD, if I remember correctly, and he goes into the biochemistry in laymen's terms in some detail.

After I read it, I looked to see if there were more contemporary studies on the sodium/potassium ratio. And I found a lot.

Moore presented evidence showing that having a high K/Na ratio was beneficial in terms of morbidity and mortality irrespective of whether it ameliorated hypertension.

Of course we all know that much changes once you are keto. I don't doubt that Volek and Phinney and many redditors feel a lot better when they add lots of salt to their keto diet. It didn't do anything for me.

Magnesium, on the other hand, is a bid deal for me and amelioration of muscle cramps.

Yes - found sugarfree salmiak pastilles on Amazon. And this seems to work incredibly well - taking 3 of them seems to raise blood ketone values significantly (around 0.5) 2 hours after ingestion.

The ones I'm using: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HCMBD4G/

I haven't kept good notes yet (busy week) but I'll try some more controlled experiments this week or next. So far, it seems to be useful, but n=1 so YMMV.

I don't have easy access to one either, but having read dozens of papers on sauna use (including decreasing all-cause mortality) I had to do something. I ended up buying one of these, best decision ever. Especially since I can do it at home while watching TV!

https://www.amazon.com/Wild-Planet-Sardines-Virgin-Lightly/dp/B003H7YHUW/ I got the sardines, they sound awesome. Big, fatty, meat only, and clean.

I was there. I was about 650 pounds in December -- bariatric beds gave widely varying weights: Error (meaning over 700), 650, and 615. I know I was quite a bit more than the 600 I weighed on a doctor's scale several years ago, so I just used the 650 as my starting weight (my highest?).

But I'm 6'5", so I am a lot taller than most people on the show, and carried the weight differently.

I finally found a good bariatric scale at Amazon that goes up to 700 pounds. It's a wide one so it can handle my wider stance and I don't lose my balance while on it. They didn't have such a scale a year or so ago when I looked, so it was a great (and timely) find.

Down 140 pounds so far, and haven't needed insulin at all this year. Last year, I was using a third of a vial every day. I've spent nearly $10K on insulin over the past 6 years. Now, A1C has dropped to 5.4 and blood sugars are normal.

Thanks for asking, yeah I have experimented with various amounts of lite salt, things like magnesium supplements, and 40000 Volts. It did not seem to make much of a difference (except for diarrhea when I took too much).

Angela Stanton, PhD wrote Fighting the Migraine Epidemic

https://www.amazon.com/Fighting-Migraine-Epidemic-Complete-Migraines/dp/154697637X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1523394887&sr=1-1&keywords=fighting+the+migraine+epidemic+angela+stanton

Well worth your time to read. Has helped me. In 50 years of debilitating migraines frequently daily ocular migraine nobody explained a more cogent mechanism that can be influenced relatively easily. My occurrences have been reduced to infrequent, following the protocol. Thanks to Demonocracy for posting a link to the book on the sticky.

What's the consensus about Fully-hydrogenated Lard?

I can get Armour Lard on a shelf (non-refrigerated) at my local store pretty easily.

u/lessthanjoey · 1 pointr/ketoscience

That sounds like magnesium to me. What type of magnesium is it? Magnesium oxide is almost totally useless (close to zero bioavailability) and basically just acts as a laxative. Try this one: http://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-Absorption-Magnesium-Elemental/dp/B000BD0RT0
