This is the "Learn to Play" rulebook, it comes with the boxed set A Matter of Honor. If you want to learn how to play, this is the best resource you can buy right now. If you don't have an LGS with players, pick this up on Amazon or something:

If you have that, or have enough cards to try and play with a friend at home already use this link. It's the basic rulebook. Something to keep in mind is that if you have older cards (pre-Ivory) than some things in this rulebook are going to be slightly different as some symbols, formatting and wording changed in Ivory in order to be better streamlined and help new players. If this is the case, just use common sense whenever something doesn't quite add up.

Once you get a bit further than that, start buying cards, playing at the kitchen table if you don't have an LGS that players, or try introducing it to your LGS. Either way, you probably want to sign up for IA at the following link. This part I'm actually brand new too, also. But from what I understand IA gives you free stuff and information. A year of it costs $30:

Another step you MAY want to take between those listed above is finding Ivory Edition starter decks. I haven't been able to find these in stores at all, but you can buy them straight from AEG for $20. You can also find them on Amazon, but they're usually $16 - $20 with shipping anyways.

Keep in mind that I have played this game twice, at the kitchen table, with only A Matter of Honor. I'm trying to see if my LGS will carry it and see if there's more interest in our area, but all of this is information I've gathered or Googled and may not be 100% accurate, but I'm sure most of it is.

I sympathize a lot with this challenge. Been brainstorming a lot on the sort of things I'd like to see for carrying lots of tokens.

One thing I recommend you explore is craft stores-- things like this seem like the best middle-ground for token possibilities: https://www.consumercrafts.com/store/details/catalog/storage-jewelry-organizers-and-bead-storage/1150-11 -- anything for jewelry or bead storage has some possible options.

Not ideal, and personally I like to use the flocked smaller deck inserts that I got with a different deck box.

I have a little setup that I like and I'll share some pics of that in a little while, too, just as food for thought.

Un-warping is really tricky. It may be faster and easier to double sleeve in perfect fit hards like these: https://www.amazon.com/KMC-Supplies-Sleeves-Collectible-Cards/dp/B01HLTUD5Y

I use them for Magic decks with foils and they do a good job of keeping a uniform flatness.

I've seen things like this or this that are a fall-back option for me, but I really would love to have something to keep on the table next to me during tournaments etc to just remove and have ready and accessable and sorted instead of opening a bunch of different containers or have a plano lid open next to me etc.

This is suuuuper first world problem stuff.

I am using these (as well as red, black, and white)

For a case, I am using the Ultimate Guard 100, but I had been considering this:

Still do not have a playmat idea. Lol

Start with the Second Day of Thunder and Clan Wars stories. This series of books are a good place to start. The Dragon Clan one is probably the best. These are the stories going on when the card game first came out.

Those novels aren't long and read quickly. You could probably knock one out in an evening or two.

Amazon has a deal on core sets going on right now. One core isn’t enough to make a single legal deck.

https://www.amazon.com/Legend-Five-Rings-Card-Game/dp/B074PZVD9X

If you want to just try the game, I’d go for two cores, or I’d try to find a local L5R group and asking if someone could make a deck for me to see if the game is for me.

Got one of these (https://www.amazon.com/Deck-Box-Satin-Tower-Metallic/dp/B01ANIMOBG/ref=sr_1_7?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1505674634&sr=1-7&keywords=ultra+pro+satin+tower) myself.

Much cheaper, token tray in bottom. Holds 2 regular or 1 L5R decks (Honestly it may even hold 2 of those, its capacity is higher than advertised).

I use the Ultimate Guard and it's half the price of that deck box. (EDIT: Looking at US Amazon, it looks like the price of the Elder Dragon might be gouged by that one seller)

I take the central tray out so I can fit more stuff in the central compartment. It holds 2 dials, a 20 sided die, rings, first player token, and a bag of my tokens with just a little more room to spare (enough for two more 20 sided dice).
