As you can see, there's a fair bit of variance - and purely card-based games go for cheaper, sure. But as soon as you're adding board, tokens and dice, costs begin to balloon. It's at the higher end of the scale but it is by no means an exorbitant price. Boardgames are an expensive business, yo. Monopoly and Clue only get their lower price points because they're the 800-pound gorilla in the ecosystem.

If you want to just try the game, I’d go for two cores, or I’d try to find a local L5R group and asking if someone could make a deck for me to see if the game is for me.
