I would highly recommend the "Weird" Series. They are separated into different states, but there are also two volumes for the USA as a whole and one that is all about the weirdness in England. The books cover all aspects of the bizarre in local areas from cryptids and ghosts to unusual buildings and people who lived in these places. I know that I loved these books myself as a kid, and they were largely responsible for my own infatuation with the supernatural. Here's a link to one of the first (and most popular) book in the series: http://www.amazon.com/Weird-U-S-Americas-Legends-Secrets/dp/1402766882 Hope you and your family have a happy holidays :)

This authors written a lot of stuff on OBE's but this book I found the most helpful. Lots of different techniques and he's documented a whole lot of people's personal experiences to help explain the experience. There's other books out there as well but to be honest this is probably the best book on the subject

I know you already have security cameras but you need to have another one pointed to where this happens.

I'd recommend something like this. You can configure it to send you alerts (via smartphone) when motion is detected and then you can login to it and watch what's going on. I imagine you can also set it to record when motion is detected.

Either way, good luck, hopefully you can figure out what's going on.

No problem man!

I feel you on the money problem man. The stuff I have, I have either acquired through Christmas, Birthday gifts, or working my ass for them haha.

As far as costs go, it just really depends on what tools/accessories you're wanting. There are paranormal kits on Amazon with various things. Just check out some stuff here.

It's a pretty awesome app!

I'm sure you have heard people say that there is no stupid question, well sadly there are haha, but that is actually very good question.
Was I scared? Yes. I was terrified when I first started. With time I began to become more, use, to it I guess.

I use my phone for an EMF Detector.

The only time I have ever used "trigger objects" is when I was with Alex. We used his grandpas favorite in-scents. We have also been using candles a lot. Once again, I have only done so while with him.

There have only been once or twice when I have been at a place where I knew the history and why there were hauntings. One was Sacred Heart Cemetery, it's on that shadowlands site, but when I try to go to the hauntings index it says 404 :(. And the original Cry Baby Bridge out here.

I have investigated plenty of abandoned houses/buildings. It can be quite dangerous though. We have had plenty of run ins with drug dealers, random evil looking people, and the occasional homeless man or woman. Be very careful with abandoned places. Always have a few knifes on you. At least one for everyone. And have it quick and easy to get to in case you absolutely need it!

That's actually the only equipment I have right now. I plan to buy a lot more whenever I get the money.

It's fine haha. I love answering questions. xD

This is definitely worth reading.

Scientific research that shows there is more to dreaming than we can explain or understand with current science.

The author used to be a skeptic but now admits there are some things which we can not explain that can even benefit people.

He explores encounters with deceased individuals. Cool author and interesting info.

p.s. Everything will be okay. ;)

Yeah that is probably the most reasonable explanation. If you're having trouble getting to sleep, this stuff works pretty well for my wife and I. Sleepytime Tea

I like that tea a lot better than taking something like sleeping pills. It helps knock me out pretty well, and actually stay asleep throughout the night.

If the books or websites that you read have bibliographies, then follow those references, it may seem tedious but you can sometimes hit paydirt. I would recommend beginning with this book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Occult-Colin-Wilson/dp/1842931075 it is a very broad insight but has some gems.

As for separating the misinformation from the 'real deal' then all I can say is research everything you read, don't rely on one source and certainly don't rely on evangelical fans of the author either, treat everything as biased and you will be good to go!

Good luck!

I wouldn't be able to do the topic much justice through a reddit post, but I'll reccomend you some great books on the topic

The encyclopedia of Demons and Demonology

The Dictionary of Demons: Names of the damned

The Vengeful Djinn: Unveiling the Hidden Agenda of Genies

The book of Yokai: Mysterious creatures of Japanese folklore

That oughta be a good start, because believe me the topic is as interesting as it is detailed.

> Around Halloween, it would turn on by itself and play this strange medley of growling, children singing, piano music, etc. It was usually at full volume and would turn off on its own. One time I was able to ask, “Alexa, what’s playing right now?” And the response was that it was “Creepy Halloween Sounds.”

Could be a software "easter egg" (a secret feature put in a piece of software just to amuse people), or an app such as this one (I don't have one of these devices so cannot test if the sounds in this app match what you describe), or even just an ordinary sound file playing. Highly unlikely that this is anything paranormal as the sounds described are very cliche.

> I theorized that maybe a neighbor was playing these sounds at their house nearby (on their porch, or for a Halloween party, etc) and that ours somehow picked up the signal.

This is not technically possible with devices of this kind. This kind of thing used to happen with analog radios, two-way radios, wireless microphones or headphones, and so on. Digital systems such as modern cellphones and WiFi and bluetooth devices cannot "interfere" like this.

> The very last incident was a bit different. My grandma passed away around that time. A couple of days after her passing, the Echo turned on (when I was alone) and started playing “Mandy,” by Boston. I had never heard that song before and had never played it on the Echo. My grandma was the only one who called me Mandy.

That could've been your grandmother, if the paranormal is real. These devices are very sensitive and don't require a loud voice, just a clear one (Google Now on an Android phone can actually be triggered with an electrical signal corresponding to a sound volume that would normally be inaudible, if you give it the right signal), so I imagine that it would be quite easy for spirits to talk to the device (similar to an EVP recorder).

> if I needed to, I could go to a school and learn all about such things and do experiments

But of course, you will not do that. You'd see it as a waste of time. There are people who claim that they've done so. And you trust them. Because your heuristics about people say so, not because you verified the science.

> use that in experiments and make reliable predictions. I do wish such things were testable and verifiable.

Try these:

Glimpsing Heaven

Extraordinary Knowing

These aren't proof in their own right, but they should give you ideas of what you could test if you wanted. Extraordinary Knowing could point you to research that has been done, is rigorous, and does favor the existence of psychic phenomena (though not about spirit life in particular).

You could take steps to try and test and verify this for yourself. One easy way might be to go to a good hypnotist and do several regressions. If the regressions are clear enough, details might come to you that you have no way of knowing, and which you can subsequently verify. Not proof of reincarnation, but subjectively strong evidence.

There are ways to test and verify, and it doesn't take much to come up with ideas how to do so. It's not even nearly as hard as measuring the electron, or finding the Higgs boson. We just don't want to.

Yes! For those interested, it's Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach. She has several others out (6 books and one compilation). Gulp might be my favorite but I really enjoyed Packing for Mars and Bonk. This sub would also really appreciate Spook!

One of the best books on the subject is on Amazon:
Essential Reiki: A Complete Guide to an Ancient Healing Art [Paperback]

A few of my friends' grandmothers use reiki on their children and grandchildren primarily, but also their pets. One of the best things about the practice is it doesn't require tools so you'll always be ready to administer it if the need arises. You can read the intro and first chapter which has a lot of background information on the practice. The practice has existed for quite awhile, but detailed records weren't written down until about one hundred years ago so there are some differences between the Japanese and the American systems.

Children of the Grave is a Booth Bros. production. Some people love them, some hate them. I personally find their work to be very entertaining, though I find some of their evidence to be questionable. They have several. My favorite is "Spooked: the Ghosts of Waverly Hills, because I have a bit of personal history with that location. Also, the original Ghost Adventures documentary is pretty good, and contains some of the most compelling evidence I've ever seen. It was filmed before the guys started getting, well, dorky. hehe

Here is a website to help you find a "certified" medium. I'm not sure how rigorous most of the certification processes are, but I trust the one the Windbridge Institute uses. The founder of Windbridge, Julie Beischel, has a nice short ebook about her research on mediums. You can download the kindle app if you don't own a kindle. You can also take a look at some of her publications on the subject. She discusses some of them in the book, but its nice to be able to see the raw data.

Yeah it could. This is a really good book I have on dreaming https://www.amazon.ca/Secret-History-Dreaming-Robert-Moss/dp/157731901X . Also another good resource is Ted Andrews - Dream Alchemy. I have his book Animal Speak, which is also a great read.

If you are interested in the Borley Rectory, I can highly recommend this book. Whether you believe the stories about it or not, the book makes a fascinating read!
