Having lived here all my life I have a variety but you may not want to buy as many. I have something like this for grip and something like this for higher snows/shoveling snow/wearing when its cold and I’m wearing a dress or skirt. I dont like the grip on them as much though so sometimes I pair with crampons depending on what I’m doing.

Anyway, I don’t think as a newbie you need more than one solid boot. If you are looking at this one, I think its a good choice. Some may say overkill, but if you have a 20 minute walk in the cold, you may appreciate at least having space for layers of wool socks and a place to tuck in some under-armor.

I use a few Reolink cameras that I bought off Amazon. - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B010LH48F4/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1518934378&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=Reolink+camera&dpPl=1&dpID=41TlsqaRGeL&ref=plSrch

Love the quality of these cameras.

The software I use is called Blue Iris. It's pretty much the best recording software for IP cameras you can get. Some people say the interface looks kind of old but I like it. I have mine set to only start recording when it senses motion and to also text me. - http://blueirissoftware.com it was like 60$ I think?

Works amazingly well!

Having a camera can be helpful in a lot of different situations. Foscam makes some good ones that feature HD recording, night vision, and ability to stream online when you're away. I have this one and am pretty happy with it. Just make sure you set it up somewhere that is slightly hidden but gets a good viewing angle. If you're pointing it outside, it should be easy.

After enjoying your absolutely amazing pics, I read a half dozen of your comments, and after appreciating some, I thought about suggesting this fantastic book, written by a very cool guy.

u/pookypocky · 2 pointsr/philadelphia

It's a pretty fun movie, but the novel it's based on is fantastic, and the first in a great series of hardboiled detective novels by the criminally underrated Charles Willeford. Go read them all, they're awesome!

heat+ac/water/electric is a flat fee covered in my rent so it's not a huge concern for me, but I've only been here since the beginning of the month so I'll have to play it by ear.

That being said, this seems to have good reviews, and someone broke down how much it cost to heat a 14'x12' room to 70 degrees and it came to 26 cents a day according to said reviewer. Can't personally vouch, but might be worth checking out.

You could also try bubble wrap on the windows it's an insulation technique often used for greenhouses in the winter, and you'll get hours of entertainment if you're the easily amused type.

On Saturday I went to Rider Park in Lycoming County. Nobody seems to have heard of this place because it is not a state park. I was the only person in the park for most of the day. The trails were exceptionally wide and easy to follow and there were interesting things to see like a mountain meadow, the foundations of old homesteads, and even a little graveyard.

The park is also nowhere near Philadelphia but my point is that there are obscure places for decent hiking. I think Bucks County has many green spaces for hiking. I've been reading Explorer's Guide Eastern Pennsylvania which lists many places.

My project this summer has been to explore the Poconos. I visited Bushkill Falls which is not free, but pretty spectacular. Big Pocono State Park had some great views and the Indian Trail was nice but very rocky. I also went to Hickory Run State Park and saw Boulder Field but I only ventured out into the boulder field a little. I drove to a few overlooks to see the Delaware Water Gap but I need a better trail map before I attempt to do any hiking there.

Mancur Olson's The Logic of Collective Action is always a good one.

John Rawls' A Theory of Justice should be required reading.

Deborah Stone's Policy Paradox is a deeply underappreciated treasure trove of applied theory.

And while we're just throwing out good books, Jill Leovy's Ghettoside is pretty brilliant.

Still have reading issues huh? Not a Bernie fan either. Maybe this can help you. And it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest that you live with your parents, so maybe if you ask nicely, your mommy will help teach you how to read with that app. I mean, I am sure you know words and have the best words, but if you can only speak them and not read them it won't get you far in life. Good luck!

Yeah, it is like someone should invent an inexpensive, durable waterproof bag that floats in water and can be tied down.

This is obviously not a personal attack, I get persnickety about this stuff because I spent a large chunk of my childhood camping, hiking and canoing out in the pines. Nothing takes you out of the "I am alone with nature" feeling quicker than an empty case of beers or floating plastic chip bags. If they were dumped on purpose or through negligence makes no difference to me.

It only takes a tiny bit of care and preparation to avoid mucking up a natural treasure for others (like erogenous_war_zone) who wish to enjoy its beauty.

> is alcohol permitted?

Lol

That’s like asking if you’re allowed to drink outside an Eagles game.

As for buying discs? Just buy a very stable, bright colored driver and a putter on amazon. You really only need 2-3 discs starting out.

Something like: https://www.amazon.com/Innova-Disc-Golf-3-Disc-Colors/dp/B000Q838XW/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1536084686&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=disc+starter+set&dpPl=1&dpID=51ABavZHDCL&ref=plSrch

When you learn to throw and place the discs where you want them then you’ll begin to notice how different discs have different flight paths, you’ll use that like you would a different club in golf for different situations. But buy a cheap set because you’ll beat up your discs (beat up discs become understable) and probably lose a couple in the time it takes to build up the skills you will need to utilize a good disc.

Don’t forget to write your number and an email on your disc, if you lose it then people typically reach out to try and get it back to you.

I’d get a portable unit like this one it’ll have a piece that’ll go in the open window and connect to the unit to draw air from the outside without jutting out the window. Depending on the size of your apartment you could go smaller or larger as well. I have one for my living room and it’s pretty great for keeping the room cool.

Winter liner for your helmet, proper winter gloves, and a face mask will make the ride very comfortable.

I have a Bern helmet and they offer a lot of liners compatible with their helmets: http://bernunlimited.com/shop/accessories/knits.html

For gloves I use these (I like how the fingers help hold the handlebars and brakes without reducing finger mobility by having 5 bulky fingers: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SOMBQBI/ref=pd_sim_468_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=SA68F2J0KCMWT4VGE10D

Face mask, really anything cheap works. Be sure you air it out before using the first time cause they smell like cheap chemicals: https://www.amazon.com/World-Pride-Face-Snowboard-Motorcycle/dp/B006K930UC/ref=sr_1_16?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1478018406&sr=1-16

So those blue / clear "recycling bags":

are NOT cool to use? Asking for a friend...
