And this in turn was almost certainly what earned him a permanent nap in Lake Starnberg.

Incidentally, Mad King Ludwig, and the fantastical castles he was known for having commissioned, is the premise for a really good board game, The Castles of Mad King Ludwig. In it, players compete to build the best castle based on whatever the Mad King's whims are in that particular session, with players taking turns as the "Master Builder", who gets the benefit of setting the prices for all of the building schematics for that turn... but also has the downside of being the last person to be able to buy them. As you build your castle, you get bonuses based on the types of rooms you build, so long as you can "complete" them by having all of the room's doors lead somewhere else.

So you're trying to build up your own castle, while at the same time making strategic buying decisions - is that piece you really want worth the high expense the Master Builder has set it at, or is it better to buy something cheaper and hope it's still around next turn when hopefully the next person will give it a better price? Do you build a castle that fits more in line with what the Mad King wants, or do you aim for something more pragmatic based on the pieces available?

What sort of room bonuses do you aim for? Pantry areas give you free turns but aren't worth many points, garden areas give you lots of money, but limit where you can build, and dungeon areas are point multipliers and wild cards, but to build them you need to make a staircase that leads to the basement level.

I talk this game up whenever I get the opportunity, because it's loads of fun. It appeals to the builder, looking to create the most ideal (or bizarre) castle imaginable, to the deal-maker, looking to make the most of their turn as Master Builder to exploit supply and demand, and to the strategist, making choices about what you'll buy based on how others' castles are progressing.

Definitely check it out!

There's an excellent book called How the Irish Saved Civilization where the author makes an excellent case for Irish monasteries bringing written works back to Europe and ending the Dark Ages, by virtue of being so secluded from all the action going on in Europe at the time. It's a great story, and told well, even if the historical value isn't on perfectly stable ground.

It's also important to remember that scholars saved what they thought was important, and so moving forward we see a subjective slant on what was preserved (culturally subjective at least).

What's really interesting is that from a historical standpoint if the Irish had fallen in to the Dark Ages as well and Europe had not pulled out of that nosedive, the Chinese Dynasties or Muslims (under a Caliph) likely would have become the imperialist forces of the modern world.

I use this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WSAWZ1M

It comes with software which you could use, I guess, but it is very buggy and frustrating to use. I instead use OBS (https://obsproject.com/). Once you hookup the VCR to the computer you set up the VCR as the capture device in OBS settings. Set up OBS to record a file of everything that shows on that device. Hit play on the VCR and you should see the VHS tape playing on your screen. OBS will capture it & when it's over you can hit stop recording and it will make the now-digital video file for you. One thing I learned the hard way is to make sure it is picking up the sound. If your computer's volume is off, the resulting digital video file will be silent.

Hope that I explained it well enough. Good luck :)

I think any ELI5 will be oversimplified. You'll come away feeling like you've gained an insight, but the explanation won't match what nature really does.

If you want an understanding of how nature behaves, then you'll need to spend time reading a book called QED. It's actually very readable, even for dummies like me who have no math or physics training whatsoever.

There's a quote floating around that goes like, "According to Feynman, to learn QED you have two choices: you can go through seven years of physics education or read this book". And it's quite true.

You can find the book here or you can watch the videos here.

EDIT: For the truly curious, you can read part of the book here.

You have all got to read his biography: The Chris Farley Show: A Biography in Three Acts. It's a close look at his life from the people who knew him best - friends, family, and co-workers.

As a child I grew up laughing at/with Chris Farley, but this book gave me a new perspective on this man. He really was a tragic figure - deeply religious, caring, and funny, but had an addictive personality and was too eager to please people. The book is really touching and gave me a different perspective on the addiction-fueled lives that so many stars lead.

Worth the read.

Wow... I love this, and know my son would as well.

Any interest in painting another for sale? My 3 year old would love this!

We "find the moon" at night and then read "Good night Construction Site" (http://www.amazon.ca/Goodnight-Construction-Sherri-Duskey-Rinker/dp/0811877825) together before bed!

u/parliament32 · 2 pointsr/pics

Not odd at all, you are just affected by marketing like a good little sheep. If the majority weren't affected by it, marketing wouldn't exist (or would at least be different).

If you have a couple extra bucks to spend on amazon, I would highly recommend this book, it's pretty interesting.

I'd like to add this thread on conceptart for inspiration. Watch someone go from this to this.

Also, The Natural Way to Draw goes hand in hand with Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, really. Anyone who seriously wants to learn how to draw should get this, because it's basically a coursebook and it will put you through the ringer. It sets you up to draw for hours a day and you don't get your eraser back until later lessons.

u/sumthingcool · 3 pointsr/pics

IMHO this concept is best taught with manipulatives, like so: http://www.amazon.com/Learning-Resources-Plastic-Base-Starter/dp/B000F8VBBO

Really good for enhancing visual math thinking and can be introduced to the child gradually through play.

u/Wilwheatonfan87 · 27 pointsr/pics

American here. Best bet is Amazon.com here

It has a sort of rusty look to it with a citrus/bubblegum flavor, at least that's the best I can describe it. Definitely

u/nickreed · 2 pointsr/pics

I'm still going strong with this pack of 100 blades I bought from Amazon (7AM Blades). They work great and the quality is surprising for the price.

BTW, I also use that same Merkur Razor.

Check out this book for your kid:

I am so excited to finally see my board game published by TMG! It was three years ago when I first signed the contract and I have been patiently waiting for its release. Solar Draft is a light drafting (Ticket to Ride style drafting) game where you are a fresh new Solar Architect trying to build the best new solar system.

Here is the BGG link for more info: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/287732/solar-draft

And here it is on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Tasty-Minstrel-Games-TTTSD3024-Solar/dp/1947941208/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=solar+draft&qid=1574428248&sr=8-1

This is a tangent, but if you ever want to change your own mind, one of the best biographies I ever read was told oral-history-style - The Chris Farley Show

u/WhatWasThatNow · 9 pointsr/pics

It's all in his book Wall and Piece (it'll be the best purchase you've done all week). Wikipedia has some good background information about him too.

u/Crawlerado · 7 pointsr/pics

Nope sorry. I paid for the meal, you get paid to clean it up. NOW, there's a difference between being a slob and making a huge mess and just leaving everything there. I suggest everyone read George Ritzer's - The McDonaldization of Society especially this bit:

>Consumer Workers - One of the sneakiest things about McDonaldization is how consumers get tricked into becoming unpaid employees. They do the work that was traditionally performed by the company. The prime example of this is diners who bus their own tables at the fast food restaurant. They dutifully carry their trash to friendly receptacles marked "thank you." (The extreme rationalization of this is the drive-thru; consumers take their trash with them!) Other examples are many and include: ATM's, salad bars, automated telephone menus, and pumping gas.

If you like this, check out Pete Souza's book of photos from the Obama administration - Obama: An Intimate Portrait. It contains many amazing, emotional photographs and I have it on my coffee table.

u/OmnitronXI · 1 pointr/pics

I am amused to see this castle on my front page. Today I purchased and played a few games of Castles of Mad King Ludwig. if anyone is looking for a new game, enjoys tile placement games and like building crazy castles i recommend checking it out.

u/Benisar · 1 pointr/pics

Yep! Although it's much easier to buy a holder for your phone like this one.

u/bjamil1 · 4 pointsr/pics

He literally just did: https://www.amazon.com/Obama-Intimate-Portrait-Pete-Souza/dp/0316512583

His IG is a pretty cool follow as well, just as a day to day contrast of how President Obama handled similar events and situations compared to what Trump does in real time

u/sew_butthurt · 2 pointsr/pics

Awesome! Good on you for parenting and teaching the beauty of the natural world. If you've never tried stargazing with binoculars, I highly recommend it.

I have these, they're cheap and a pain in the ass to get focused, but once that's done they're incredible: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008Y0VN/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There's a fun book called "How The Irish Saved Civilization" https://www.amazon.com/dp/0385418493

I wonder if this is placeable in the book.

I fucking LOVE DunkAroos.

I'll just leave this here.

Very nice! BTW, the process is actually called, "gesture drawing" and was developed by a guy called Nicoliades who wrote the definitive book, "The Natural Way to Draw". It's the drawing method taught at the Rhode Island School of Design. (0r was when I attended way back in the seventies.)

u/Fweebers · 2 pointsr/pics

I had one and loved it. I guess someone else loved it more because they broke into my car and stole it.

Frequently bought together with this.

Bonus: the questions and answers and the review on this pillow is worth a read.

u/kaldrazidrim · 3 pointsr/pics

Keep it up! I want to recommend two books to you. The first was used as the curriculum in my Figure Drawing class: The Natural Way to Draw - Nicolaides

The other is called Constructive Anatomy and takes the mystery out of those trouble spots like hands and faces.

They make smartphone mounts specifically for telescope eye peices. It's actually a great way to see what the telescope is showing without bending down to put your eye to the eyepiece.

Never been into a straight razor so I use a metal safety razor instead.

I use a Merkur Model 180, a cheap shaving brush (about $15) and simple shaving soap. (about $2.50 each) I buy 100 Razors and one blade lasts a good 2 weeks on average.

Its about $60 initially, then 2.50 every 3 months for new soap, and $16 around every 3.8 years for blades. (3.8 years is an estimation based off 2 week blade use, haven't reached it yet myself.)

Yeah, its going to be more expensive over time for sure compared to your set up, but it beats $34 for 8 razor heads every 3 months.

u/The_0racle · 1 pointr/pics

Wow, I totally forgot about those things. I wonder if they still make 'em.

Yup

If anyone has the chance you should read The Chris Farley Show to learn just how true that statement is.

u/OfficialAndySamberg · 2 pointsr/pics

for anyone wondering how. I bought one of these and a VCR from a thrift store ($6) and recorded using OBS. (to play the 8's I used the original camera which still worked)

u/Polderty · 2 pointsr/pics

I have been reasonably happy with these. But I use them for looking at "stars".

u/LeahBrahms · 0 pointsr/pics

Oh I can sleep with Nicolad Cage every night thanks to Amazon.

u/SixesandNines · 0 pointsr/pics

I have used this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00008Y0VN/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/192-1836196-0641147

for over a year now and have been pretty satisfied. I wouldn't pay much more than the $60 cost, but they do a fine job. I've been able to see all the major planets, the moons of Jupiter, a bunch of Messier objects, and larger asteroids like Ceres, Vesta, and Pallas, all from light polluted NJ.

They can be used handheld if you lean on/against something, but a tripod is really the way to go.

u/zeroThreeSix · 2 pointsr/pics

I'm surprised nobody has linked to amazon yet...

You can buy them in bulk too!
