I wouldn't be as concerned with the mineral content as I would with water treatment chemicals. Chlorine or chloramine would be the two biggest things I wouldn't want in my bubble.

RO is best but if you're on a budget, I use one of these..

Hydro Life 52700 Inline Water Filter (with Flexible Hose Protector, Hydroponics C-85) https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01N8TYQ9W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Z74hDbFT8WC9Z

Great for living/no till soil as well.

Going to give this a try... got this heat mat here : https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01IDQD32Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hopefully it works well. OP you are using something similar then? It goes to 108f so hopefully I’m good. This looks DELICIOUS

I recently got 33% yields off some Death Star with a 300lb hand clamp & a flat iron.

I have a press, but when it's not mounted up, a good flat iron without floating plates can do the job quite well.

Looks like you're off to a good start, try pre-pressing/pucking your material a half or whole gram at a time with a pollen press & you'll have less flower getting in your goo when you don't use filters, I never do & don't get anything but an occasional spec, which is easily removed.

Great thanks for the reply! So what do you think would be the best way to produce bubble hash from bulk trim?

This 20 gallon machine seems to be the most common option:

26c is pretty hot. I aim for 20c +/- 1 degree. 60% RH is perfect as long as it doesn't go higher and there's some air movement, but only indirect. That usually gets me around 64% RH in the jar after 6-7 days hanging. How long did yours hang and did you have a humidor in the jar to measure?

If you don't have anything for the jars, these things are expensive, but they are absolutely worth it for a perfect cure. You done need one in every jar, just enough to cycle through your jars the first week during jar burps.

You want to get much colder than these people, using dry ice on and in everything you use. Freeze the alcohol, and get a grease filter.
Try to not use glass as it is very breakable and shattery at cold temps.
Fill this thing with dry ice to pour the super frozen liquor through.
https://www.amazon.com/Culinary-Depot-Fryer-Filter-Stand/dp/B01LFB3CC0/ref=sr_1_2?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1493238568&sr=1-2&keywords=paper+grease+filter
The water should ice up and stay in the filter as the alcohol passes through.
That's only if everything is cold enough. The freezer is NOT cold enough.
A shitlload of dry ice is. The super cold walk in freezer at joe blow's work is not cold enough, but nice idea. No that freezer over there isn't cold enough either.
''Hmm let's save money and not get that much dry ice'' = not cold enough.

Lol yeah I'm such a lightweight I end up sitting on buds too long. I'm a cheapskate so I buy in bulk but then I use it suuuper slow. I need to restrain myself and I'd have better quality bud for longer.

Fortunately rosin is much more shelf-stable in the right kind of jar! I've been shopping around and I finally found some that are small enough and airtight enough that they might meet my specifications. Here's hoping they're as advertised!

If your temp gun has emissivity settings, then you can adjust the number to get an accurate reading on shiny surfaces. But of course if you can't adjust the emissivity, then something black and matte is the best to get a reading from. That bbq paint is a good idea.

I picked up this guy a while back, https://www.amazon.com/Nubee-Non-contact-Infrared-Thermometer-Temperature/dp/B00JA3BMDW it great, and allows changing the emissivity setting to get accurate temp across a wide range of materials.

Also make sure you stay fairly close to a 1:1 ratio for your "distance to spot size" or you risk your measuring area to be too wide and may get some inaccurate readings.

Your responses are a goldmine for me to dig through. I appreciate every single one. Stashing those links away for the build.

I've decided to go with a 12 Ton stand up press. Looking to go somewhere around 4.5x6.5 with my plates. I'd like to have more pressure than necessary than run out of PSI and not get the most out of my setup.

I've found the Rex-c100, surprised at how reasonable the price is. Did you have to hack it to get the SSR output or did the unit have the output? I'm finding conflicting reports. The one I'm looking at is here - http://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B00LHKJFZI/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?qid=1453314309&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70&keywords=pid+controller+ssr&dpPl=1&dpID=41RoEIXkzkL&ref=plSrch&dpPl=1&dpID=41RoEIXkzkL&ref=plSrch

Did you end up sourcing heaters from China or locally?

And I'm wanting to do a very clean set up. Very clean. If I'm buying a shiny blue press then I'm making this thing pretty somehow. :-)

Do you think something like this 1/2 inch breaker bar would work as well? Like, as long as it's 1/2 inch it'll fit properly as an extension handle on a 1 ton arbor press?

u/CharlyDayy · 2 pointsr/rosin

A heating mat you say? That's interesting. Never heard of those. Something like this?

Can you control the temp pretty accurately with your mat?

u/Jeabus215 · 3 pointsr/rosin

For a first press ever with dried up weed it’s pretty good looking honestly. You can get glass humidors to put your material in
I have these exact ones and I made a wire mesh holder to suspend the material and you don’t need artificial humidity packs. You can probably use a cone coffee filter and put your material in that. Just use distilled water.

humidor

Would this PID work (0-400F)? Or not sure if you use a different model with more 'channels' (I think you said you run 2 per platen, and I think from one unit?)...

In my old day job, I've used setups like this (for different purposes)... you might find this link handy (and maybe some within) - lots of tips for DIY lab stuff (which is entirely relevant for this venture!)... this specific link has a build for a precise/reliable "thermo-coupled heating pad" (within 0.1-0.01deg) - but maybe this is overkill (and ~$200) unless you've found reliability issues with cheaper units...

Otherwise, I'll wait for the post to get other details... thanks again!
