  • The music kit I bought came with a hole punch and paper, so you can get started right out the box. There are ones that are around 10 dollars cheaper but use plastic gears which I heard wear down easily. If you don't mind hand cranking it, you can just toss it in a woodbox and go from there.

  • Here's the motor and speed controller that I used in my build. You just need to hook up the motor and a power source to the speed control, and then find a way to mechanically turn the crank with the motor. I just used a hex coupling to attach a piece of stiff cardboard to the end of the motor shaft which turns the crank. It might be easier to just go with a motor-run music box instead, that way you just need to clip the wires and hook up to the speedcontrol (or just use as is if you dont need to adjust speed!)

  • The wheel was made from two film reels I found in a local garage sale with some nuts and a threaded rod, and it's held up by two wire coat hangers that I bended to fit.

  • The paper with the actual song on it needs to be hole punched for each note, this is a great site where you can fully program a piece to see how it would sound before actually punching the paper. It also lets you export the piece as a pdf with x's on the exact places to punch holes so the process is a lot cleaner.

Other than that, its just woodwork to frame all the parts into one piece, where there are a ton of better resources than me on the subject. Keep in mind just settling on handcranking the box is loads of fun on its own.
Feel free to pm me if have any more questions on it and good luck if you actually decide to go for it!

I wanted to build a standing desk, but with a custom look. I went with the popular IKEA Karlby counter top for the surface and trimmed it a few inches (Home Depot) due to landlord (wife) requirements. For the legs I chose the iMovr Freedom standing leg base - for me that was the best combination of good reviews and reasonable cost. I made a number of trips to a local woodworking store to learn about what type of sealant to use, etc. The highlight of the desk was incorporating a hidden wireless phone charger which I’m very proud of.

More details below:

  • DIY I followed for the hidden wireless phone charger
  • Tools used: Router for drilling out wood for wireless charger, regular drill for drilling legs into the desk and screwdriver for tightening various screws.
  • The whole build took me about a month - much of that was spent waiting for parts, etc. Actual working time was probably 24-30 hours I would say.
  • I sanded the surface down a bit as it initially came slightly rough, and then sealed it with a Minwax protective finish to seal the wood.
  • The iMovr desk base allows raising and lowering the surface with 2 buttons, and also allows presets to be programmed in.
  • I used the Nexlux Led Light Strip for the lighting

Happy to share more details. If you have any questions, just DM me!

Fair enough. To be honest, I'm not an experienced or skilled woodworker. The raised panels are easy if you have proper router bit.

I'm not a purest and don't mind pocket screws for this type of thing. The only place you ever see them is when you open the drawers and if I were smarter I could have hidden too. I wasn't setting out to win any awards with this dresser - I just wanted to see what I could do and I'm pretty happy with the results given the amount of effort. I know that pocket screws will never be "accepted" as a valid type of join, but for the mild hobbyist like me they work great. I would never have attempted a project like this if I didn't have my Kreg Jig.. it just makes things easier. I'm sure I'll eventually try some dovetails or box joints, but until then - pocket screws for me!

Well also remember that in the 1970s people felt different about rock stars and young teenage girls. This was a Blind Faith album cover that apparently people thought was okay enough to actually mass produce. I'm not making a value judgment about it myself, I'm just saying things were different.

And if you listen to some of their better work, it's actually multiple layers of guitar, rhythm and lead, overlayed with excellent studio production. It wouldn't be easy to reproduce that live without adding a rhythm guitarist to the band on tour, but they didn't do that, so live, it just sounds...different.

I'm not a huge jimmy paige fan or anything, I just really like a few Zep albums, and I don't like the revisionism that's going on right now that it's apparently fashionable to say "oh Led Zeppelin wasn't that good" including their individual members. It's funny because the bass player, Jones, was usually the most overlooked but now he's the one that people don't question because it's become so hip to doubt on Paige and even Bonham.

The process of taking blues songs and, over time, blending in folk music and original songwriting, together with advancing music and production technology is what created rock music (evolving from "rock and roll"), and if you want to look at the trajectory of a band's career that traces that evolution perfectly, it's hard to find a better example than Led Zeppelin.

They quite literally were one of the major creators of rock music.

So some of the appeal is historical, some of the appeal is the excellent and (at the time, for rock) innovative playing on the albums, and some of the appeal is style - like, look at every rock guitar player with the long hair and the tight pants and the crazy outfits, and bombastic style, and you can see a reflection of Jimmy Paige.

It's a curse of having influenced generations - at some point, 45 years later, people are gonna say, "what's the big deal, it's not that great," because everything that came after seems so much like it, it's hard to imagine how different it was before that thing came along.

A couple protips from a former acid etcher turned full laser shop owner. If you want to pick up a decent vinyl cutter for a decent price, look into USCutter's SC series. It's a solid entry level machine with better manufacturing than the MH line (mine died after a year). They do cost a few hundred, so if you're just starting out, cutting by hand is going to be your way to go.

Cutting by hand is touchy, but there are ways to make it easier. Get a stack of #11 hobby blades (standard Xacto size), they'll be your best friend. Next - get a roll of clear contact paper (super cheap at Target, look in the shelf paper). Print your design on lightweight printer paper, then lay one layer of contact paper on your glass. Make sure it's on there nice and smooth. Next, sandwich your printed design between another piece of contact onto the glass. Then cut out your design, generally starting from the center and moving outward. Once you have the whole design cut, take the scraps of the top layer off, and weed (pick out the cut parts) your bottom layer. Then make sure all of your edges are pressed down, and apply Armour Etch. Make sure to dab, shifting your brush around, to get all the air bubbles out. Don't brush, or you'll end up with swirls and brush marks. Then just let it sit for 10 minutes (watch for drips), and wash off the Armour Etch and vinyl.

I know you said you already have the tools, but I would suggest buying a full kit off of Amazon. It would be cheaper than buying just the wool. The wool the kits come with it rather cheap but good to find out if it is something you would want to invest it.

This is the kit I started out with

You don't need to use these tools that this kit comes with if you already have some. These tools too, are pretty cheap.

I can absolutely suggest some great Etsy shops that sell great quality wool if you would like too.

I got this set as a gift, but after doing three projects and burning my fingers on the handle I'd recommend buying a tool like this where you can actually adjust the temperature. For more information and inspiration I'd recommend checking out /r/pyrography and good luck getting started.

Bakers make great modernist cooks because it requires so much forethought/calculation. As for resources, my first book was Cooking for Geeks, then the Modernist Cuisine book set from Nathan Myhrvold (and have it signed by him "For Science!") which is the bible, but free options include their website, Seattle Food Geek, molecular recipes, this YouTube playlist from Harvard and the usual science-based cooking resources like Good Eats, America's Test Kitchen, and Chef Steps.

I learned not to overthink the ice sphere mold: fill it with water and take it out after three hours, then melt a hole in the top and suction out the liquid water with a syringe. The chocolate was tempered then about a tablespoon was dolloped into each half, joined, and tumbled for coverage. Turn every 15 minutes in the fridge until it pulls away from the mold.

The goat cheese was thinned to an oozy consistency with goat's milk to get the desired "popping" effect. I wanted to do something creamy that would complement the char on the lamb and acidity of the vinaigrette.

Best things to sous vide: Eggs to various stages of yolk doneness, well-marbled but tough cuts of meat (think USDA Prime grade Chuck steak and pork ribs) over 72 hours at 140F, salmon with smoked salt to 113F is spreadable like butter

Thanks for the love, guys! Glad you enjoyed it as much as my boyfriend did, and I did making it. Here is a breakdown of the cost if anyone is interested.

  • Un-Laminated Map $13
  • Laminated Map $20 (seems to be on sale now, of course -_-)
  • Frame $18 (was half off at Joann's Fabric)
  • Mod Podge $10 (didn't use, will probably return)
  • Mod Podge brush $3 (again, didn't use)
  • Glue Stick and X-acto knife I already had
  • I was lucky enough to be able to use my mom's high quality photo printer and photo paper, supplies she already had, but I imagine using Walgreens or Office Depot to print pictures would only be a few bucks depending on size.

This project did take a couple of hours, between going through and picking out the pictures, measuring, cutting, etc. I just threw on some HGTV and chugged along! It really didn't seem like a hassle of a project since I enjoyed what I was doing and knew my boyfriend would appreciate it. Was well worth it!

PS props to /u/vulgo for helping Photoshop the Florida pic!

Welcome to the rabbit hole! It looks fantastic. Even selvages is really the hardest thing to figure out in weaving. Honestly it’s mostly trial and error and every project is a bit different. Try playing with the angle you set your pick at before you beat it. I strongly recommend this book has a great section on how to resolve common issues as well as inspiration. It’s basically my weaving bible b

Thanks! For floss storage I love using those [plastic bobbins]. I recommend the plastic ones, not the cardboard so they wont get bent or rip with wear. (https://www.amazon.com/Darice-Plastic-Floss-Bobbins-1000-Piece/dp/B0018N26FU) and for storage, craft stores sell divided storage boxes that fit the bobbins and keep things nice and neat!

A website that really helped me when I was first starting out was Needle 'N Thread they have text and video tutorials on pretty much everything!

I started with Polymer clay. Do a google search for Sculpy. With polymer clay you can use basic tools to mild it and then harden your creations in the oven.

There are millions of YouTube tutorials on how to create basic gifts, through to advanced sculptures. It's a great hobby and polymer clay is pretty inexpensive (£10 - £20 in the UK).

Once you are confident you can then look to buy a kiln (mine cost £600 second hand). Unfortunately this is a must for ceramic production. I'd look to amazon for pottery/ceramic sculpture books and purchase clay from suppliers such as Bathpotters.co.uk.

I recommend this book for beginners: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Handmade-Pottery-At-Home-Ceramics/dp/1446303462

Hope this helps :)
