Hi there. I just went to Korea over the summer with my wife! Unfortunately we ended up on separate flights because we left/returned on separate days.

Not sure how much your husband has traveled before. I was absolutely DREADING the flight (4 hours to San Fran then 12 to Seoul for me) but I actually had a wonderful time and the trip itself went great.

Some tips:

    1. Go to Walgreens and pick up some Meclizine. It's for motion sickness and is available over the counter. It's like Dramamine and definitely can knock you out, but I never felt like it caused me to drag like Dramamine did once I woke up. Both flights this knocked me out for a good 3-4 hours.

    1. Go to Amazon and grab a comfy neck pillow. I got this one. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06WWFYCSG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    1. My flight had plugs but I also picked up this cheap battery in case my headphones died. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005X1Y7I2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    1. Get an Audible subscription. The first month is free so you can cancel. I recommend Red Rising. It's a good one and it occupied a lot of my time to listen to.

    1. Get a cheap surfacebook and buy Civilization 5 or 6. This alone took up a ton of my time.

    1. The flight showed good movies to take up some time. I recommend downloading the flight app BEFORE you board. My flight showed Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and a couple other good ones on the main screen, but you also have the option of a netflix-esque list of movies and shows on your phone/tablet.

    1. The food was absolutely terrific (for a flight meal). Hot and delicious. My flight had a baked chicken dish with rice and steamed carrots. Was really tasty. They actually served us 2 hot meals and 2 snacks. Besides these, definitely consider grabbing some snacks. I like simple peanut butter crackers.

    1. On that note, every time you are offered water, TAKE IT. It'll give you a good reason to move around and go to the bathroom. If you can find times to stretch your legs, go for it. And it has the added benefit of helping to avoid blood clots.

    1. If all else fails, my flight had free beer + wine. That alone should help him manage!

Shouldn't be too bad overall. Like I said, I was so dreading the experience and actually my flight overall went super well. I'm totally open to it now in the future, where before I thought I would do this one trip and not fly so far again for a few years.

      Good luck!

Well, thanks for the advice then!

I just wish that the particular subset of Western society that considers young men like yourself who have grown up with a strict, fundamentalist family as having ideals fundamentally opposed to their "western values" had a chance to meet or interact with you.

Here you are, living in a place and surrounded by values that are so unlike anything many of us in the Western world have experienced and you're cracking jokes about 'fursonas' on Reddit. If you didn't tell us in this TIFU post, I doubt anyone would be able to tell that you're not some 20yo from New Jersey.

I know the world is unfair, but it seems to be almost cruelly so when -- based on your interactions with people on this site -- someone like yourself, who clearly would fit perfectly into a society whose values align with your own is not in a position to actually become a part of that society.

I've enjoyed our conversation and not to harp on this point, but please continue to consider leaving your country. Any other place would be lucky to have you. I know that family ties are strong, but you didn't pick your family and ultimately you do not owe your life to them.

You truly do not need to live the rest of your life unhappy, feeling like you don't belong, married to someone you have to "learn to love." There is so much shit in the world but there is a lot of good too. I know it seems impossible to leave, but that's an illusion. It would be hard and dangerous as fuck, but not impossible. (Edit: as I wrote here, claiming asylum is absolutely something you can do and your situation is exactly the kind of thing it was designed for)

There is a fascinating book I read some time ago called "Dear Leader: My Escape from North Korea", written by a high-level North Korean official who does something like what you've done: he accidentally gives a prohibited magazine that he signed out from a "restricted" NK library to a friend who then forgets it on the subway, leading to the magazine being turned into the secret police and the author interrogated. He talks his way out of the interrogation for the moment, but knows that his life as he knows it is over and that he'll be re-arrested and likely killed the next day.

He ends up on the run and eventually ends up in China, with no money, no family and no friends. It's an absolutely fascinating read and I highly recommend it.

I figure it might be difficult for you to purchase books online, so I've uploaded my epub copy (and a PDF conversion if you have trouble opening the EPUB). I'll PM you the link so the mods don't delete my comment if they stumble across it.

Have a good life and like I said, if you ever need anything feel free to PM me.

Except /u/FootsieFighter's metaphor wasn't a metaphor.

A pencil sharpener that sharpens many pencils is just a pencil sharpener. Those things are made for sharpening more than one pencil (in some cases even more than one type of pencil) so sharpening multiple pencils isn't really a feat that warrants a "master" status. Keys on the other hand are manufactured for a specific corresponding lock, so if one key is capable of opening many locks it is certainly impressive.

On the subject of locks versus pencils:

A lock is supposed to have a one to one correspondence with the key that opens it, otherwise it is indeed useless. It fails at being a lock. It fails it's telos. A pencil on the other hand doesn't fail at being a pencil from getting sharpened many times, that's what pencils do. It actually fulfills its telos. The pencil isn't even analogous to a penis, one is finite in potency and the other isn't (at least from having too much sex).

So that sharpener-pencil analogy conveys nothing but what its literal meaning implies. It doesn't fit the human reproductive model. Whereas the key-lock analogy fits perfectly.

Here's how:

Male mammals are biologically wired to have as many sexual partners as possible [1], [2].
Why did I link to a book titled "Momma's Baby Daddy's Maybe?" Just to show how historically there was always inherent uncertainty in the paternity status of the males. Women give birth so their maternity isn't really questionable. Men, however, prior to DNA testing, could never with complete certainty know if the offspring was really theirs unless they were in an experimentally controlled environment prior to conception (which realistically never happens). Thus, evolutionarily, it makes sense for males to have multiple sexual partners to increase their biological fitness. In other words, a man who has many female sexual partners (key that opens many locks) is, in the absence of some other factors, biologically more fit than a man who has few female sexual partners. You can disagree with the morality of that all you want, doesn't make it less true biologically.

Now to examine the role women play in the context of human evolution:

For natural selection to work, there needs to be certain set of preconditions. One of these conditions is sexual selection (a subset of natural selection). Women are in charge of regulating this gate (or lock). Just as men are biologically wired to reproduce women are biologically wired to choose the most biologically fit male to reproduce with (since scarcity of sexual partners isn't usually an issue with females). This ensures that most of the genes in the population's gene pool are the ones that are most suitable for species continuation in that environment. In this sense, women are indeed like locks. If this lock can be opened by any key (male with ambiguous biological fitness) than it's probably a detriment to the evolution of our species, and is therefore "shitty."

TL;DR: While I agree that metaphors can be made to support virtually any viewpoint, I don't think /u/FootsieFighter's metaphor holds any ground.

Good question. First let's talk about safety. The only way to ensure the safety of yourself and everyone around you is to keep the firearm as you are, unloaded and locked up. As soon as you start keeping a loaded firearm around, your percentage of risk rises as a matter of fact, not just my opinion.

-Unloaded and locked firearm=little to no risk of accidental injury

-Loaded and unlocked firearm=slightly to greatly increased danger of accidental injury and death

So yes a firearm in a locked biometric safe would be a better option for defense of self, family, and home. Another thing that you can do to increase the safety of your son and yourself is to train him on how to correctly handle and use a firearm. Take a hunters safety class together, find a knowledgeable friend or teach him yourself. My niece (9) had to recite and explain the above firearm rules to me (verbatim) before I handed her her first rifle, a bolt action .22LR.

The next thing to talk about is how to store a self-defense firearm. I have no children so my sidearm sits next to my bed, my truck rifle stays locked in my truck, my wife's sidearm sits on her bedside table and all of the other firearms are under lock and key. If I had children the sidearms would be kept in biometric or combination lock safes.

A firearm used for self-defense is best kept ready to use in a safe manner. For example, a handgun in a biometric safe, ready to be used in case of break-in. A shotgun in a wall lock ready to use, or even a rifle kept in a safe that you can open quickly. This is one of the things that prompted my original comment, as there are few things more useless than an unloaded weapon when you need a loaded weapon RIGHT NOW.

The final thing to talk about would be calibre choice in a self defense weapon. A .22LR while lethal, is not considered to be an adequate self defense method by many. The choice of a defensive calibre is as varied as any shooter you talk to will have their own unique opinion. The .22LR cartridge is carried, by people I know even, as a self defense option but I would start at .380 ACP and above. I carry 9mm for my defensive carry option, but as the saying goes, the best gun for the job is the one you have not the one you wish you had. I would look into getting a reliable handgun in a calibre that you are willing to carry and able to shoot accurately with. While some people are willing to carry a massive .45 ACP handgun, that may not be the right choice for you. If you are trying to find a pistol to meet your needs I will be happy to discuss that in great detail with you.

This was a longer post with several different points that I was trying to touch on so if any of it was less than clear, let me know.

For reasons not worth recounting here I become a devotee of Dr. Linus Pauling and his L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) theories for life improvement about 10 years ago.

I started taking 1gram (1000mg) of L-Ascorbic Acid before each meal, (3 grams per day) slowing working up to 3 grams before each meal (9 grams per day) over the course of 3 months. When I got up to 5 grams per day my panic attacks started to subside and by the time I got to 7 grams per day I was able to eliminate them completely.

The Linus Pauling theories on Vitamin C are controversial, but so was the theory that doctors washing their hands would improve patient mortality rates in hospitals or the theory that Smoking causes cancer. Sometimes it takes mainstream science a while to catch up with a visionary, or a two time nobel prize winner like Dr. Pauling.

Note: If this theory hold any interest be informed that true Vitamin C is L-ascorbic acid, most stuff you get at the supermarket or even vitamin shop that is labeled Vitamin C is half L-ascorbic acid and half R-ascorbic acid, the R-ascorbic acid isn't recognized by your body and is eliminated in your urine. You can get L-ascorbic acid from Amazon Solgar and Nutribiotic Nutribiotic is about half the price of Solgar

This is great, but I really recommend you look into the superior version of this app which was released in the 1980s.

Total Body Workout by Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's hilarious, but it's actually, also, insanely difficult - Arnold counts pretty quickly! He has some awesome tips for how to workout at home, great exercises!

And iTunes. And some of it, most of it, is on YouTube.

Respect & kudos to your family for keeping your cat -- way too many people would've never even given him the chance to show he could get along without sight. I hope he has a long, healthy life!

You've probably had it recommended a million times already, but just in case you haven't: if you haven't read Homer’s Odyssey - Fearless Feline Tales of the “Blind Wonder Cat” I very highly recommend it. :)

Oh, and your mention below of yowling -- if your parents haven't already done it, make sure to have a vet check him out & do "senior screening" bloodwork, since the senior "I'm lost" yowl can be an early red flag for something going wrong. Hopefully all is well, but better safe than sorry!

As someone who takes narcotics for pain, may I recommend Miralax? It dissolves in coffee easily and helps keep the constipation to a minimum.

Softer poop will be much easier to pass, talk to the docs about how much Miralax you need.

(I'm not a medical professional, please talk to an expert before taking new drugs!)

You're also going to need a bidet attachment for your toilet. That will help clean your butt without lots of painful wiping. I recommend this one, it's easy to install and use: "Luxe Bidet Neo 120 - Self Cleaning Nozzle - Fresh Water Non-Electric Mechanical Bidet Toilet Attachment (blue and white)" https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00A0RHSJO/

Good luck with your butthole, OP, I hope you heal quickly. Remember that the embarrassment will fade, accidents happen :)

Even if you don't get an official dx it is worthwhile to understand how Autism has manifested in your life, and educate yourself on the specific traits. It can help you understand yourself and your sons better. Understanding why you(or they) do certain things or behave in certain ways can reduce stress and misunderstandings. A book I would recommend is Very Late Diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome (Autism Spectrum Disorder), it has been very enlightening.

I absolutely love this little guy.

Decently priced (only $53), USB powered, decent resolution. Ok night, not outstanding, but even some of the $150 don't perform as well at night as this one. Uses a micro SD card, up to 32GB, writes multiple movie files. When it fills up, it deletes the oldest, and writes a new file.

I currently only have the one on the front, but I do have two usb ports. I'm using the second one for my phone, but considering getting one of these for the rear as well.

Have you seen these - https://www.amazon.com/Catit-Design-SmartSift-Sifting-Cat/dp/B009B83V76

I bought one a few years ago and it's a godsend. You can even go a step up with the litter robot that doesn't even need you to pull a lever.
