Everybody talks up vega but honestly the texture was atrocious and it overwhelmed the taste of anything I put it in. Mealy and overpriced :(

As long as you're not looking to try it on its own, I'd honestly recommend this stuff. The texture disappears very well in smoothies and oatmeal, and though the flavor is...not great, it's super easy to cover up because it isn't strong. Also? Very very very cheap, because it's not marketed specifically at vegans.

110 calories for 25g protein.

No problem! Check out estate sales for a good deal if you don't want to pay full price. I have had a large processor for a long time and I don't remember the original cost, but I have been searching for a small one for awhile and finally just bought one new at Costco and it was $25. Honestly, i can't see myself ever not having at least 1. I love my big one, but when I make pesto for myself it's just too big. But a smaller one, you will find a lot of uses for. And you can always just use a small one and make multiple batches at once.

https://smile.amazon.com/BLACK-DECKER-1-5-Cup-Electric-HC306C/dp/B000I0DV6W/ref=sr_1_1?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1506795738&sr=1-1&keywords=small+food+processor

This is probably fine for what you would need. And then later on down the line if you find you love it, you could save up for a bigger one. I'm guessing if it has 1 button you probably have to stand there and hold the button down to use it (mine have 2 buttons, one to turn on and one to turn off/pulse, but they work so fast that sometimes I do have to stand there so certain things don't overly process).

Yeah! This one uses a pre-made sauce: I sometimes make it with a home made lower cal one too, and add more tofu. It depends! This one was the below

One 12" spring roll wrap (I get these at an international market https://www.amazon.com/Spring-Roll-Wrapper-Rice-Paper/dp/B0000CNU2X)

one cup shredded nappa cabbage, or other cabbage
170g shredded carrot
45g extra firm tofu
a few leaves chopped mint
1/4 medium avocado, sliced
1.5 tbs Thai almond sauce (i added some red pepper flakes too) (https://thrivemarket.com/p/yais-thai-almond-sauce?utm_medium=pla_smart&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Shopping_Engagement_Smart_Members&utm_content=864305000154&utm_term=na&gclid=Cj0KCQjwy97qBRDoARIsAITONTItSd-D08RmafN1p706CDkC6HTOQKx_qVppOjcqUgtIDyuRdVjbakgaAkdAEALw_wcB)

Toss all veggies other than the avocado, and the tofu together with the sauce. Wet the rice paper in luke warm water. Lay it on a clean surface, quickly put the avocado slices in a little fence like square, and put the rest of the filling inside. roll like a burrito, and there you go!

It's really easy to customize--bell peppers and cucumber slices are nice it it too. It usually depends on what I have on hand.

Exactly!! I tried to recreate a salad from SweetGreen (small salad "chain" from NYC) which had crispy fried spicy broccoli on it and it came out almost like the one I remembered.

I thought the exact same thing before I did a bit more looking into air fryers - it's really more of a high power toaster oven that is wayyyy easier to use for making tofu, veggies and literally anything else. I used it to make croutons the other day... came out perfect WITHIN 5 MINUTES. I've had mine for about a month and I LOVE IT. Like, I wouldn't ever want to be without an air fryer ever again. Hahah! I swear I don't get paid to write this.

I got this one for $40! I wish now that I got a bigger one but this is the perfect size for 1 person, or just to get your feet wet with air frying!

To make these I scooped out the insides of a potato and set aside 60 grams of the mash and used the rest for another dish. I put the potato shells into the oven to bake and while that was happening I microwaved the scooped out portion and mashed it with almond milk, salt, and pepper. When the halves were done baking I added in the mash potato and layered with cooked broccoli, a little daiya chedder, Tofutti sour cream, and hickory smoked Veggie Bacon Bits bits (these are delicious bacon bits, btw), and chives. I really liked the Tofutti sour cream and bacon bits, but next time I would leave off the Daiya because I don't think it added anything to it. I think I would have preferred butter instead.

edit - by butter I mean Earth Balance Buttery Spread. The BEST butter that I have ever tasted. Better than dairy butter, imo. And if you get the whipped kind it is only 80 kcal/Tbsp!

I've tried a few and right now my favorites are depending on type of use:

  1. For most smoothies - Orgain Slim (20g protein /150 kcal). Tropical fruit smoothie recipe -Orgain Slim Vanilla + frozen tropical fruit + a liquid base like Ripple high protein milk or ginger ale, little lime juice - LOVE this combo. Orgain has a creamer base that makes smoothies super creamy if blended with frozen fruit or anything really cold. I also like mixing Orgain with flavored syrups and icecream for high protein dessert shake.

  2. For vanilla or chocolate smoothies, no fruit - Bob's red mill nutritional booster, frozen cashew milk ice cubes, small amount of vegan ice cream

  3. For adding into baked goods - Naked Pea protein. I add this into my protein pancakes. It doesn't have any added flavor or have a creamer base. Also, it's much cheaper compared to the others.
  4. You can add high protein milk to lots of things as an alternative to protein powder. Ripple milk is 8g protein for 80 calories.

FWIW, I did not like Vega Protein Smoothie (both chocolate and tropical)

Hi! Not a dumb question.

First, I cut off a piece of tofu, wrapped it up in a paper towel a few times, and put something heavy on it for about 10 minutes or so. Then I put the raw vegetables in a hot pan and sauteed it in a couple tablespoons of low sodium soy sauce. Throw in the dry tofu add a tablespoon of teriyaki sauce. Stir until the veggies are a firmness you like; I like them a little crunchy. The veggies I used here came in a packaged "stir-fry" package, but you can use whatever veggies you like; broccoli, snow peas, zucchini...to name a few of my favs. Next, prepare the shirataki noodles just like how it says on the package (rinse and boil for 2 minutes). Finally, add the noodles to the pan, add 2 tablespoons of teriyaki sauce, stir for a minute, and you're done. I had to eat this out of a mixing bowl because a regular bowl was too small :)

Here's where I got my noodles from: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BP36RTY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

I make 'frittatas' for my husband.

  • 1 cup chickpea flour
  • 1 cup PAN corn flour - this is NOT masa harina! (or more chickpea flour)
  • 1 tbsp VEGG (optional)
  • 3 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • indian black salt to taste (optional, it just gives and eggy flavour)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2.5 cups water
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • other herbs spices like paprika or oregano are nice too

    Mix the above until smooth

  • ½ onion - finely chopped and sauted
  • 1 bell pepper - finely chopped and sauted
  • ½ package frozen spinach - thaw and squeeze out excess liquid
  • ¼ cup sundried tomatoes

(you can use different veggies if you want, these are just my preference)

Mix veggies and egg mixture and spoon into lined muffin tins
Bake at 400˚F for 30 minutes or until a knife comes out clean

IIRC these come out to about 50 cal per muffin, so you can have a few. They also freeze well, so you can make a bunch all at once.

Heads up - the chickpea flour will smell real gross before it's cooked - don't worry, that's normal! It will smell much better after it's cooked.

I'm a huge fan of vegan chicken salt

https://www.amazon.com/Chicken-Salt-Australias-Selling-Seasoning/dp/B00P89MGYG

it tastes like the packets that come with ramen noodles, in the best way. instant flavor.

u/Godzillium · 3 pointsr/vegan1200isplenty

Sure thing! The pitas freeze really well so if you like them you can order them in bulk and save on shipping. Sometimes I get them from the Joseph's website ($2.99/pack), but I used to get them from Amazon ($6.99/pack). Walmart has them too. You might also check out the Joseph's Lavash bread. That has equally good macros.

Either Netrition or Amazon (whichever is cheapest)

https://www.netrition.com/protein_plus_peanut_flour.html

https://www.amazon.com/Protein-Plus-Roasted-Natural-Peanut/dp/B0052OOYOW

Love this product! It's 110 calories & 16g protein for 1/4 cup. You have to add your own salt and sweetener like I did. Sometimes I mix in low calorie pancake syrup with warm water to get a peanut butter type consistency. Try it with graham crackers as a dip.

It’s super easy to make yourself. I live in BFE and it’s tricky to find here too. You can get vital wheat gluten for about $8 and then follow a recipe like this one:

u/theotherchase · 16 pointsr/vegan1200isplenty

https://minimalistbaker.com/easy-vegan-gravy/

Only used 1 T oil and the entire recipe was 3 cups total.

on the plate - (130 cal) Gardein vegan breaded turk'y cutlet, caulipotatoes (1/2 mashed cauliflower, 1/2 mashed potato), peas & carrots, low cal cranberry dressing

Not sure of total calories for plate since yesterday was my day off from calorie counting (my idea of a "cheat day")

cranberry dressing - take fresh cranberries, wash them and microwave (covered) until you can mash them with a fork. Add sweetener and frozen orange juice (about 1 T) to taste.

edit - the reason my gravy looks different from minimalist baker's is that the broth I used is different from hers which has a red tint. Also I opted to keep some of the mushrooms out of the blender and add them in later for texture.
