> Is the "pro" controller worth it?
I haven't gotten one yet, and though I'd be interested to try one, I don't feel it's necessary. Thus far every game has played fine with either the standard Wii U controller or one of my many various Wii controllers. For Mario Kart 8, I use a Wii remote with a classic controller attached. For Smash Bros., I use a GameCube controller adapter, and for pretty much everything else I use the Wii U controller.
> I know I can use my old Wii mote and nunchuck for old Wii titles, but do any Wii U games require them?
You'll really want to have at least one set, both for backwards compatibility and multiplayer, as well as for the occasional game where you want to use something other than the Wii U gamepad.
> My ones are a little beat up, should I replace or not worth it?
Depends how beat up, I guess.
> Note: We never got the motion plus ones.
If it helps, quite a few games come with one packed-in:
Wii Party U (Edit: Best Buy apparently has this on sale for $30)
Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games Sochi 2014
Just Dance 2014
There are also bundles with Nintendoland and some older Wii games, but at least at the moment those aren't really cost-effective.
> are games like New Super Mario Bros and Mario Kart that much different to the Wii versions to warrant getting them?
New Super Mario Bros. U is, in all honesty, pretty much more of the same. I mean, it's a good game, but it doesn't break any new ground. Super Mario 3D World, on the other hand, is fairly unique and unlike pretty much any other Mario game out there (save for Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS, although even there the multiplayer sets it apart).
Mario Kart 8 is another story. This is a superb entry in the series. It's graphically absolutely stunning, and the gameplay is IMO probably the most balanced and fine-tuned in the series. If it wasn't for a shitty battle mode, it'd be a damn near perfect Mario Kart game.
> Wii Fit U - I know there is now a meter device, but is the board the same? Can the old Wii one just be used if I get just the game and meter?
If your old board still works fine, you use that. It's the same one.
> Any other accessories I should look at?
I'd say get a Wii Remote Plus, numchuck, and classic controller if you don't already have them. Other than that, I don't think anything's really all that necessary.
> I want a gamecube controller and adapter for Smash Bros, but looks like I'll be waiting a while for those.
Yeah, Nintendo stupidly vastly underestimated the demand for these. But at least so far, Smash is the only game that'll use them.
> Are the Amiibo's worth it for an adult?
Eh. I mean, they're not that pricey, and fairly detailed for little figurines to keep on your desk or something, but as for their utility in games, really all we've seen so far is their use as (essentially) a virtual pet in Smash, and to unlock stuff in other games. How much that means to you is kinda' up to you.
> Any other game recommendations to check out before looking at some reviews?
Thus far, the must-haves on the Wii U are Smash, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, and Super Mario 3D World. There are other games worth having, but those four are essential buys.
As for the rest, Pikmin 3 is wonderful, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is superb, and Nintendoland is a nice little multiplayer game. It also bears mention that the Wii U versions of Rayman Legends, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Batman: Arkham City (all must-have multiplatform games) are the definitive console versions of those games.
> Anything else I should know before buying?
Try to get a good bundle. You missed Black Friday (one of the retailers had a nice bundle with four games), but if you look around you can still probably find something that's a better deal than the standard MSRP.
Also, be sure to make use of the Club Nintendo and Deluxe Digital promotions - it's a little time-consuming, but if you can manage it, it's an easy way to get tons of free games.
First thing I'd do is order [Wii Party U] ( http://www.amazon.com/Party-Black-Remote-Plus-nintendo-u/dp/B00DC7FWRE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381842635&sr=8-1&keywords=wii+party+u).
It's $50 and comes with a black motion + controller and comes out this month. The game looks really fun local mutliplayer, and you will really want a Wiimote+ in your collection as well so this kills 2 birds with 1 stone. Grab a Black Nunchuck to match and you should be good to go.
[NintendoLand] (http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Land-wii-u/dp/B002I0K3M0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381843310&sr=8-1&keywords=nintendo+land) - Is really fun local multiplayer, and can be found for $20 or less these days. Keep an eye out and you can get it cheap.
[Need for Speed Most Wanted U] ( http://www.amazon.com/Need-Speed-Most-Wanted-Nintendo-u/dp/B00A39IEN8/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1381843367&sr=8-6&keywords=need+for+speed+most+wanted ) - is the best version of the game. They support every feature the PS360 has + off screen play, a co-driver mode which helps you change your environments, DLC included, further draw distances and higher res textures (they used the PC textures, not the PS360 ones) so if you don't already have it, it's a great game and under $20.
[Rayman Legends] ( http://www.amazon.com/Rayman-Legends-nintendo-wii-u/dp/B008AU4YEA/ref=sr_1_1_title_0?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1381843522&sr=1-1&keywords=rayman+legends+wiiu ) - Is also best on Wii U, in particular if you have someone to play co-op with.
I'd also at least try the [Zombie U] ( http://www.amazon.com/ZombiU-Nintendo-Wii-U/dp/B00897Z27C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381843957&sr=8-1&keywords=zombie+u), Monster Hunters 3, [Wonderful 101] ( http://www.amazon.com/The-Wonderful-101-Nintendo-Wii-U/dp/B002I08CSW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381844015&sr=8-1&keywords=wonderful+101), Sonic & All Stars Racing all of which are pretty good and have demos in the eShop.
Some Wii Games you missed since the Wii U is 100% Backwards compatible.
[Metroid Prime Trilogy] ( http://www.amazon.com/Metroid-Prime-Trilogy-Collectors-Edition-Nintendo/dp/B002ATY7JE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381842549&sr=8-1&keywords=metroid+prime+trilogy ) - Fantastic. Can't be stressed enough. 3 FANTASTIC 20+ hour games, and the motion / pointers controls are fantastic. This is how FPS's should be done.
Super Mario Galaxy 1 and [or 2] (http://www.amazon.com/Super-Mario-Galaxy-2-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B002BSA388/ref=pd_sim_vg_2) - Both are great, but if you're going to get [Super Mario 3D World] (http://www.amazon.com/Super-Mario-3D-World-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B00DC7G0GG/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1381844129&sr=1-1&keywords=mario+world) I can see waiting on them.
[MadWorld] ( http://www.amazon.com/MadWorld-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B0019SY1D4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381842523&sr=8-1&keywords=madworld ) - Short and fun, guilty pleasure kind of game. Think of the movie "The Running Man" done with a Sin City style and you're pretty close and it's under $10 now. Also for guilty pleasures I enjoyed House of the Dead: Overkill
[Red Steel 2] ( http://www.amazon.com/Red-Steel-2-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B001TOMR0C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381842459&sr=8-1&keywords=red+steel+2 ) - Fun game that probably would of sold better if they didn't call it "Red Steel 2", it's a LOT better than the 1st one and different enough that it could of been it's own IP.
Any Tiger Woods from 10 and up - I enjoyed them all, but once they added Wiimotion+ support it controlled much better.
[Punch-Out!!!] ( http://www.amazon.com/Punch-Out-Nintendo-Selects-Wii/dp/B005EIIBKY/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1381842847&sr=1-1&keywords=punchout ) Has support for motion controls or old fashioned NES style. Fun game.
Take a look at the recommended games list.
In terms of games I would recommend to everyone there is Super Mario 3D World, and Mario Kart 8. In my opinion they are the must have games for the console. Smash Bros should also be out before Christmas, and that's sure to be a great game as well. More party friendly games (that will require Wii remotes) are Wii Party U and Nitendo Land.
Accessories will depend on what games you want to play and if you had a Wii or not. For most Wii U games, the Wii remote + nunchuck combination works very well (Wonderful 101, ZombiU are the exceptions I know of). For a full picture of what all the controllers work with, take a look at this infographic.
Something to know for the New Mario/Luigi U games is that you will need an extra controller for every player that wants to control a character. Unfortunately, when playing with multiple people, the gamepad is always relegated to placing blocks the other characters can jump on in this game. For other games, you can use the gamepad to control at least one main player.
Personally, my favorite accessory so far has been this charging station. It makes sure, the controllers we need for 2 players on any game are always charged.
Let me know if I left you with unaswered questions!
From the eshop, Runner 2 is a lot of fun. It's sort of a hybrid between a rhythm game and a sidescroller. Also I've heard good things about Trine 2. I've played Trine 1, which was awesome, and the sequel also supports 3-player co-op.
As for physical games, New Super Mario Bros is a must (as long as you like Mario platformers). Need For Speed: Most Wanted is a really fun racing game, and I think it's the best-looking Wii U game out right now. Sonic All-Stars Racing is good if you're looking for something like Mario Kart or Diddy Kong Racing (your car transforms into a plane or boat during races). I've only played the demo, but I have the full game coming in the mail.
Speaking of which, Amazon has a sale on pretty much every Wii U game right now. For the ones I mentioned:
It's the same price on Amazon as well:
http://www.amazon.com/Rayman-Legends-Nintendo-Wii-U/dp/B008AU4YEA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1380747541&sr=8-2&keywords=rayman+legends
So, my question is, how good is the multiplayer? I am thinking of picking it up today to play with the gf. She isn't really a gamer, but she has had a lot of fun playing Kriby's Epic Yarn, and has complained it's a little slow for her. This looks much more fast paced and more problem-solvey than Kirby, which might lend well to our style of play.
EDIT: I bought it. If multiplayer is as fun as the single player, holy cow! TOTALLY worth the $40, maybe even worth the $60.
Zombie U - $14.99 (has been as low as $9.99 before at Best Buy)
Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge - $16.95
Wonderful 101 - $23.59
Pikmin 3 Digital Code - $15 - $25
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 - $14.95
Tekken Tag Tournament - $19.99
That right there will put you at about $105. You can really only find Pikmin 3 cheap by looking on eBay for those selling the free codes that came from Mario Kart 8. DKC is still generally full MSRP and I don't think I've ever seen Lego City Under Cover cheaper than $30 new. I know I've seen some of these listed games on sale for $9.99 new before (Ninja Gaiden, Tekken Tag, COD:Blops 2, Zombi U) and for sure I've seen them used at that price through GameFly (case, manual and discs usually come in excellent condition) Hope this helps
Oh yeah and Best Buy price matches Amazon (I believe Wal-mart does too) so you could go to a store, or order online (will require some customer service help) and price match the items so you can grab them from the same store.
Glad you got some good suggestions. Definitely check out the recommended game lists on the right sidebar, and for future reference please ask for game recommendations in the weekly question thread above. P.S. The LEGO movie videogame for the Wii U is currently on sale, I don't have the link but someone posted it on the first or second page.
EDIT: Here is the link to the deal on LEGO: Marvel game on the Wii U and here is the link to the one I mentioned above. Good luck!
You know how the Nunchucks plug into the Wii Remotes? Well there's also Classic controllers and Gamecube controllers that also plug into the Wii Remotes.
Here's a couple of examples. The Gamecube one is a third party controller but for Mario Kart and Smash it feels great, and it's also compatible with any games that use the Wii U Pro controller.
The Nintendo-made Classic Controller was originally for the Wii, but it still works on the Wii U for most games.
Smash Brothers purists are going to crap all over this advice because they only accept the Official Nintendo GameCube Controller & Adapter as a viable device, but you guys aren't playing tournaments, it's just some kids and family coming over to play Nintendo.
These controllers are much easier for a new player to understand than the Nunchuck/Wii Remote combo, and they are relatively cheap. Certainly much cheaper than the official Nintendo GameCube controllers and adapter, and cheaper (although not as perfect) as the Wii U Pro controller.

2)X is a sequel, as far as we know. There are certain things that are directly related, and some that are completely unrelated.
4)I'd wager there'll be no amiibo support. Have fun!
I understand what you mean, and I'm not going to pitchfork you. Here are some games that I think a 9 year old would like, and ones that I enjoy as well.
Any Legend of Zelda and Mario ones are good too.
I think it's great that not only is it just coming out for the Wii U which could potentially draw in Bayonetta fans to Nintendo. Also, if you look on amazon, I just noticed: it comes with a free copy of the original game! That's friggin awesome! http://www.amazon.com/Bayonetta-2-Nintendo-Wii-U/dp/B00DC7G1WE/ref=pd_rhf_dp_s_cp_2_5C6P?ie=UTF8&refRID=06KFS3PCPCVHYWB3R77X
Don't buy it they make it look the same for a reason. Grab a Nintendo licensed third-party Wii U Controller, or just shell out the extra 20 bucks for the pro. You can also use a classic pro controller for a lot of games.
http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Commander-Wii-U-Nintendo/dp/B00ANHBJBY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1406537466&sr=8-2&keywords=wii+u+controllers - This is a cheap controller by Nyko for Wii U i can't speak for it myself but the reviews seem OKAY.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00BRA9R5G/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new&qid=1406537516&sr=8-1 - This is an Afterglow controller, again i can't speak for it myself but i DO have an afterglow X360 controller which works perfectly.
If i was you, find a deal at target/wal-mart/amazon for a pro controller, it has an insane amount of battery life, and really it's just a fantastic controller. Also the wii-mote and nunchuk is used for a lot of games as well so maybe think about picking that up.
Just saying, those off-brand Wii U Pro Controllers are great, I bought one last year, it plays great and the battery life is huge.
But careful with some brands, I recommend these:
https://www.amazon.com/PowerLead-Wireless-Controller-Nintendo-Bluetooth/dp/B00SN1QEGW/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_63_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=E1AK2JHR6BD34ZHTYVTW
The GamePad comes with the console and you must have one. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. The Pro Controller is optional. In multiplatform games it's generally really helpful because it's more comfortable than the GamePad. So, for example, the game Darksiders: Warmastered Edition - The GamePad has no added functionality. The screen just shows what the TV shows. The Pro Controller works just as well. However in games like ZombiU, the GamePad is used for inventory management and other things. The GamePad is the way to go in that case. The Pro Controller is really good but not useful in every case. For playing Wii games, you will need a Wii Remote and Nunchuk. The Wii U Pro Controller will not work for Wii Games. However, the Wii has its own Pro Controller. It works for many games. You can buy it here. The list of Wii games that support the Pro Controller can be found here.. (The Wikipedia page says Classic Controller, but the Classic Controller and the Pro Controller are the same. The Pro Controller is a more comfortable version of the Classic Controller.)
all n64 vc games on the virtual wii need the classic controller pro. you can use the official ones, hori battle pads, or the pdp ones. if you install nintendont on the vwii you can use wiiU pro controllers, ps3, or ps4 controllers or the usb game cube adapters. all of them on the wiiu require a full pro controller of any gen (so non wiimote)
|
you can also inject roms so long as you own one game with that emulator. so if a game is not on the wiiU but you have it you can use caffeine on the current firmware to hack any rom into virtual console.
|
edit- there is also this guy from mayflash that will make your gamecube controllers plug into a wiimote and work as classic controller pro https://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-Nintendo-GameCube-Controller-Adapter-Wii/dp/B00BS520SG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1469665411&sr=8-3&keywords=mayflash+gamecube+adapter , mayflash also sells this guy that is better than the nintendo smash game cube adapter https://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-GameCube-Controller-Adapter-Port/dp/B00RSXRLUE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469665411&sr=8-1&keywords=mayflash+gamecube+adapter
edit2- if you plan on playing online you need the lan adapter as well, there are lots of 3rd party for that as well since you only need the same chipset (ASIX AX88772)
I love the Nyco charging station, which works with Pro controllers, but not Nyko's own controller. So, I'd buy Pro.
The 1-star Amazon reviews are rightly from people who expected a Nyko controller to fit into a Nyko charging base. But if you own a Pro controller, happy days. You place (and leave) a small plug in the controller's USB port, and it clicks magnetically onto the charging base.
A few weeks ago the charger was shippable via Prime, so if you're a Prime member, maybe wait and see if it becomes available again via Prime. It sold for $14 earlier this month.
Got mine here: Wii Classic Controller
http://amzn.com/B000IN0BSU
Had to buy from a third party seller, used. But it works fine, I took some rubbing alcohol and a tip to get off some of the dirt (it looked well used), but otherwise it's fine. Has official wii branding and everything, I was playing homebrew emulators with it great!
Also ebay may be an option.
Haven't used that one, but this one is generally considered the best AAIK. Longer cable than Nintendo's and works easy on PC.
I got the Seagate Expansion External Desktop Hard Drive. It has its own power supply so you'll need an outlet to power it but it performs great and looks really nice next to a black Wii U.
I got this model and it works great. Looks like the US version of what you are looking at.
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-3-5-Inch-External-STBV2000100/dp/B00834SJS0/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1415659067&sr=1-1&keywords=Seagate+2TB+external
It matches the console in color, and the LED is blue, too. These things are important. :)
One thing that threw me is that it does not have a power switch, it comes on when the device it's connected to is powered up. So this powers up when the Wii U is turned on, and off when it shuts off, so it all works out.
Suggestion: NSMBU is only $250 on ebay and Wind Waker game is $41 on amazon...buy both and you still save $9 compared to just buying the Wind Waker bundle.

Boom. Everyone wins =)
I think most of the frustration can be from confusion. Keep in mind that gamepad + a few wii remotes will cover you for almost everything. They work with virtually all Wii U games (good option for multiplayer), all wii games, and most wii VC. Though some wii VC do require classic controllers, however it is really uncomfortable for long term use. I myself only use it if I have to. The wii u pro controller is comfortable and nice to use but it is not required, and isn't as versatile as the wii remote.
There are a few places to save money on the controllers. The Wii Remote Plus/Wii Nunchuk refurbished from nintendo is a good deal, and comes in black to match the deluxe wii u. Also, get the 'japan' versions of the other controllers from amazon. They work exactly the same, but much cheaper.
What's my best option for a Pro Controller? I've been playing Xenoblade Chronicles X as my first Wii U game, and I've found the Gamepad a bit uncomfortable. I bought this third party Pro Controller off Amazon, but I could tell right away I needed to return it: the left analog stick wasn't registering inputs properly, it only registered being fully pressed in any direction at diagonals. I could take another shot at this controller (it certainly seems to be working for some people, based on the reviews), but I was wondering if there were other good options?
https://smile.amazon.com/PowerLead-Wireless-Controller-Nintendo-Wii-Bluetooth/dp/B00SN1QEGW/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1518985709&sr=1-3&keywords=wii+u+pro+controller
I'm not sure, since it wasn't mine (or hers, a friend of theirs let her borrow it). I think it was this one, though. http://www.amazon.com/PDP-Wired-Fight-Pad-nintendo-u/dp/B00LSBNSAO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417195996&sr=8-1&keywords=yoshi+gamecube+controller
I guess it's technically a Pro controller shaped like a Gamecube controller, but it seemed to work pretty well.
Kind of late to the party, but I'll leave this here.
A couple days ago my bunny chewed the gamepad's cable in places not meant to be chewed, so I was kinda forced to buy a charging station. Found this one on discount, and so far so good. It has two rechargable wiimote batteries, charges very fast, looks neat, rotates, has a pro controller dock and an on/off button. I also heard good things of the Energizer chargers, so it's up to your preferences/needs/budget.
It's a bit faster. But don't think multiple times faster, things like eShop run a few seconds faster and it seems like at this point the Wii U's processing is the bottleneck and not the connection.
This is the best fucking Wii U ethernet adapter right here.
There is also Disney Infinity 2.0 which will focus on Marvel Superheroes, if he likes superheroes a lot.
Additionally, there is the Lego Marvel game that came out a while ago which is very fun and co-op
If you want 3rd parties, check out the Afterglow controllers. I find them to be more comfortable for some games, and they are cheaper. PDP makes some decent quality stuff.
While unavailable online, they can usually be found in Gamestops and places like Sears, WalMart, Target, etc.
Haven't seen this posted, stumbled upon it on Amazon while searching for the PDP controllers. It looks a lot better than the PDP ones and I trust Hori a lot more than PDP. It says officially licensed by Nintendo as well.
Also has a Nov 21 release date listed, more evidence for that being the release date for smash bros?
Yeah. Just wait until you fill up your drive, then buy an external HDD. Nintendo recommends buying a drive that has an external power supply i.e. a drive not powered via USB. But, it seems that Amazon.com reviewers have had success using a My Passport:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006Y5UV4A/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and connecting it with a Y connector to get the required power from USB:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002W8EDOM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I currently have this setup without any problems.
These were only a few dollars more with free prime 2 day shipping. I'm convinced they are real pro controllers, one of them even has the slight remains of a polished off Nintendo logo. Idk what their deal is but they work great and I have only charged them once since I got them a few months ago.
Hey, so since you are buying a ton of Wii remotes and nunchuks you should try to pick up Wii Party U too (it includes a Wii Remote Plus), Amazon has it for $39.99 that you can price match at most places. the Wii Remotes are $39.99 by themselves and WPU is an okay party game too. Also, there is a Nintendo Land controller Bundle that includes a green Luigi wii remote for $60, Nintendo Land is between $30 and $20 depending where you look so this is a smaller deal since you are on a budget.
You can get the third party Pro Controllers that came out for Smash Bros pretty easily:
http://www.amazon.com/PDP-Wired-Fight-Pad-nintendo-u/dp/B00LSBNSAO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1427131765&sr=8-2&keywords=yoshi+wii+u+controller

Try Amazon, it's already pretty cheap with free shipping.
I just bought this y-cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002W8EDOM
Along with this hard drive: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CGUMSZC
And both work great. So nice having virtually unlimited space.
You keep saying $30 game. It's not a $30 game! Just because it comes as part of the MK8 promotion, doesn't make it $30. Otherwise NSMBU, SOnic Lost Worlds, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Monster Hunter 3 U, etc. are all $30 games too, since they are also part of the MK8 promotion.
Yes, it's a remake, but to say it's just a port is a little unfair. They completely changed the inventory screen, added Off TV play, added gyroscope controls for item usage, and changed the game here and there as well (Tingle Tuner - Tingle Bottle, reduced Triforce quest, addition of Swift Sail, etc.)
EDIT: RRP of Wind Waker HD on Amazon - $49.99
Looks like the ASIX AX88772 chipset? This is the one I have. Amazon has been on their game this holiday season. I've gotten orders within 48 hours on free shipping.
http://www.amazon.com/Support-UtechSmart-Ethernet-Chromebook-Specific/dp/B00F41TWAO
I use this one and it works perfectly. I don't see why the one you bought wouldn't work, but you'd have peace of mind with the other one since it explicitly states is supports use with the Wii U, and should anything go wrong, you can return it based on that.
Amazon? Or try checking local stores. Where you live is probably not where I live so I can't be specific, but they're still around and not that terribly hard to find.
And yeah, the controller situation is a bit frustrating. If the Pro controller could simulate a Classic Controller we'd be in a much better place, but alas, it doesn't. Not at the current time anyway. Some people still hope that will change in the future, but I wouldn't hold your breath.
I just wanted to bring an update back - After reading here, I bought two of those controllers - https://www.amazon.com/PowerLead-Wireless-Controller-Nintendo-Wii-Bluetooth/dp/B00SN1QEGW/ - and while they seem to be pretty good fit and finish, I DO find they do have a VERY slight delay to them. A delay that I do -not- experience with the big game tablet that comes with the system.
I can give a for-example. I am currently playing Ducktales (Fantastic, if you've not tried it, duplicate of the original I played as a kid) -- I was playing the Himalayas level and there's one section where you have to jump from rope to rope... It's a point where you let go of the rope, move right, then instantly press up. This controller would -not- do it. I died about 4x and thought it must not be receiving my UP fast enough to grab that rope... But sure enough, I set down the knock off controller and would you look at that, nailed it first try through all of the ropes with zero issues.
Now mind you -- I played the entire level with the other controller without any issue so this delay is VERY small. Quite possibly my button presses being advanced by myself without even really noticing, but sure enough, this section I could -not- do without the big game tablet-controller. I'm curious if it's just a cheaper bluetooth chipset they used in them, or if the Pro controller would suffer the same. I expect it would not, as it's not a bluetooth speed issue overall, the gamepad thingie is still wireless too.
I suppose anyone could test it for themselves - start a two player game with a jump in it, and press both of the buttons at the same time and see?
Congrats, you saved $3.

Forgot to post a link, seems like a fantastic deal to me:

Buy a Japanese Pro Classic Controller on Amazon. It's $25 and works perfectly. Controllers aren't region locked.
http://www.amazon.com/Wii-Classic-Controller-Japanese-Version-Nintendo/dp/B002C1AUP0
It really bugs me to play with a remote. Even the tablet is annoying to play with. If you and your friends are used to Melee, I would buy a GameCube adaptor (this one is only $15 on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-GameCube-Controller-Adapter-Port/dp/B00RSXRLUE/) and a couple of controllers.
According to Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DC7G1WE/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_gLejub0N5SZ51) the standard edition comes with the first one as well. :)
(Sorry I can't link properly, on mobile)
Edit: See product image
My external drive came with a single cable and the wiiu did reformat it successfully but it would not save files. The WiiU for some reason cannot power and transfer data over one usb connection. I bought this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OB9IAZI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You can power the drive from a separate usb to save room for this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F41TWAO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
If you want a good aftermarket controller, get the generic brand Classic Pro Controller. If you want to make sure you get the official Nintendo version, that one's Here..
The Classic Pro is fantastic for what you want to do, since GC controllers are not yet compatible. Personally, at this stage I'd rather just wait two months so I can play using a GC controller, but keep in mind that it has not been announced whether the GC adapter will work in the Wii menu through the Wii U.
The two wal marts by my house have the Pdp afterglow controller on clearance for $20. I picked it up for my daughter for Christmas becaise she really likes my pro controller so I haven't got to test it out yet. So If anyone has one and can chime in I'd like to know what people's thoughts are on them.

I'm not sure how much help this is, but this charger holds one gamepad, one pro controller, and two wiimotes. I'm on my phone and have no idea how to properly link, but here:
http://amzn.com/B00BHISQMI
It's called the Wii U Quad Dock Revolution Charger. It's my favorite out of everything I've found and so far has worked out well for me in the short 2 months I've had it. Too expensive, but it's just an option.
Haven't personally used one, but i was planning on getting one for a while to deal with my school's lack of wifi. these both seem like a good options:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F41TWAO/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2IP7QSC5EI0LN&coliid=I3U0N9KMYHCT96&psc=1

Oh ok well if you plan on buying digitally often I recommend this hard drive
Well, I just bought a new 2 TB drive from Amazon. Was contemplating this problem before. It will replace my old clunky 1 TB drive for storing actual files, so that one can be used with the Wii U.
It's ridiculous that they can't just allow us to partition the drive, especially since they don't even really sell 250 gig drives with dedicated power supplies any more (even if you do find them, it's still more efficient financially to buy something with more storage space ). I will never use a terabyte full of space for the Wii U. Especially since over half of my purchases are for the physical disks.
Make sure you have both a wiimote AND a Wii Classic Controller (this or this)
You're Welcome
the new world edition that plays in NTSC Wii is pretty reasonable:

Let's just use amazon prices:
Wii U Deluxe w/ NSMBU & NSLU - $293.87
Wii U Pro COntroller - $40.99
Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition - $15.99
Assassin's Creed 4 - $25.49
Madden 13 - $11.99
Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD - $41.40
Super Mario 3D World - $50.66
Assassin's Creed 3 - $14.61
007 Legends - $9.95
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze - $43.99
Black Ops 2 $12.49
ZombiU - $14.99
That brings us to a total of $576.42.
He could have bought the games on discount from Toys R Us which has many discounted games plus buy one get one 60% off.
Also could have gotten the buy 2 get 1 free at Target a week ago. YOu could also price match that sale, all though many stores were hesitant to do that.
PDP makes one of those Afterglow controllers for it. I've got it and I think it works great
http://www.amazon.com/Afterglow-Pro-Controller-Wii-U-nintendo/dp/B00BRA9R5G
The ASIX AX88772 is the chipset you need.
http://amzn.com/B00F41TWAO
This is the one I got, and it's been working great.
You can get it used on Amazon for about $50 if that option interest you at all!
Don't know if this helps you, but they have a Yoshi "classic controller" shaped like a GCN one that you may want to check out.
I think Toys R Us had these for a bit cheaper, but linked it to give you an idea.
Amazon has "world" version of Chronicles for $59 right now. It works with US Wii's and Wii U's. I picked it up for $52 a few months ago and it was definitely worth it.
yes. wii shop channel is fully functional on the wii mode. maybe you are unaware, but you can transfer any vc and wiiware titles from a wii console you may have. but if you mention buying a wiimote, then i would assume you dont have a wii.
just remeber a classic controller or a classic controller pro (NOT a pro controller) is needed to play n64 games in wii mode.
Rayman Legends is a real pretty game if you want something in the 2D platformer realm.
Also this one if you want to save a few dollars.
Good to know!
The Yoshi pad is on for $20 right now!
Amazon just matched it if it helps any:
Rayman Legends for $39.99
Amazon has for $20.49 for those with Prime and 2 day free shipping... 18 left at time of posting
*edit..not prime eligible =(
For a Mac, it's under System Preferences -> Sharing. For Windows 10 it's Settings -> Network & Internet -> Mobile Hotspot.
Alternatively, Amazon sells Ethernet to USB adapters that you can plug into the back of your WiiU for a wired connection. I haven't tested a wired WiiU on my network, so I can't tell you whether or not it would solve the issues you're having with WiFi.
Would it just make sense to use the Classic Controller Pro? I cant justify buying a controller for a single purpose. I hope it is compatible.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BHISQMI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is the one I use. It works the same as the one Dopey32 mentioned (althought a little more expensive), but it has an additional slot for a Wii-U pro controller and you can rotate it on a turnstile. Comes with two rechargeable backings for the remotes that fit into the main charger.
The WiiU has a really bad card. If you have an android device, download Wifi Analyzer and you can view the recommended channel for your device. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer&hl=en
Microwaves wont do much as they're very well shielded. The WiiU's wifi card is just absolute garbage. When it comes to the ethernet adapter, the generic USB ones are fine.
I have this one (http://smile.amazon.com/Support-AX88772-UtechSmart-Ethernet-Chromebook/dp/B00F41TWAO/) and it's flawless.
I'm ~15 feet away from my router and I did some pretty extensive testing last week with this stuff. I can pull a maximum of ~20Mbps via wifi but I was peaking at ~60Mbps via ethernet. I get 150 down on my desktop but the WiiU ethernet adapters are 100Mbps adapters. The only way I was able to get a decent speedtest was by using the eshop and downloading a game as no browser speedtest will be accurate due to the nature of the WiiU's browser.
I'd HIGHLY suggest you get an ethernet adapter as the card in the WiiU is terrible, but if you don't want to deal with it I'd suggest using that Wifi analyzer app to figure out the best channel
Any <=2TB, AC- (non-USB) powered external hard drive should be fine. Like this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00834SJS0/
If you decide to charge your Pro controller using the USB port on the Wii U, you can only charge the controller with the system on.
You can charge it through your PC's USB port, or you can get a separate wall charger. I'm thinking about this one as it's fairly inexpensive, looks good, and it's fairly convenient.
There are no gigabit ethernet chipsets that work with the Wii U. Only a few work, and they are all 100 megabit.
http://www.amazon.com/Support-UtechSmart-Ethernet-Chromebook-Specific/dp/B00F41TWAO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419905575&sr=8-1&keywords=wii+u+ethernet
Is what I use, works great.
Keep in mind that everything lacking a "Wii" logo in the top center of the controller is a knockoff and is probably garbage.
If you want a Classic Controller, you want to buy one of these two:
Black
White
This thread convinced me to pick up the game. It's priced at $15 at Amazon.
I purchased used from Amazon: Bayonetta 2 - Nintendo Wii U https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DC7G1WE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_Fy9vyb2WDYP79
I got both discs in perfect condition. A bit pricey at $42 but it's two games.

I bought this for my Wii U, knew immediately after i saw the majority of the titles on the eshop like AC3 and 4, and the Batman games were on the eshop i was going to need it, i mainly buy games digitally as going to a walmart or whatnot isn't exactly optional for me
Charge Base Pro for Wii U by Nyko http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ANHBI4W/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_g-Tvub0QW94FZ
10/10 would recommend for pro controller storage
If you're looking at external hard drives compatible with the WiiU, this is the one I picked from Nintendo's approved list: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00834SJS0
For $15? Sure.
ZombiU - Nintendo Wii U by UBI Soft http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00897Z27C/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_irvyub0HGEANT
Why would I want to pay $70 for that?
WWHD is good and all, but it's a $45 game at most, in my humble opinion of course. NFS MW is rarely more than $20 on literally any other platform...I got it for $5 on PC during an Origin sale.
I don't know if it changed recently but I'm seeing the normal version of B2 on Amazon including the 1st.

edit: I see that's why they upgraded them, apparently there was some confusion involved with B1 being advertised in the original edition. I found an explanation in this article.
Uno
Dos
They aren't realistic prices, some games are just inflated out the wazzoo on Amazon.
You'll only save a couple of bucks by getting a 1TB HDD, just get a 2TB one.
Here is my recommendation: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00834SJS0/ref=gno_cart_title_0?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
And since it comes with its own power supply, no need to buy Y-cable
It didn't work for me either. I tried 3 different ones I had laying around and the one that worked was the one I expected NOT to work which was one from Belkin. It's very obvious when the Wii U detects the adapter as the "please plug in..." message won't come up. My recommendation is to buy one from Amazon where they specifically say it works for the Wii U.
Edit: Here's one in case you're feeling lazy
http://www.amazon.com/Support-UtechSmart-Ethernet-Chromebook-Specific/dp/B00F41TWAO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1420579371&sr=8-2&keywords=usb+to+ethernet+wii
Go get a mayflash one, or any other knock off. They work just a well (if not better: PC mode).
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00834SJS0?pc_redir=1409966922&robot_redir=1
Edit: this one should work fine. All you really need is one that has external power.
Afterglow Pro Controller is a bargain. Found it at WalMart for $20.

Bayonetta 2 - Nintendo Wii U https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DC7G1WE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_gQaKwb1P9RT58
Amazon will have this back in stock January 11th if you can stomach the price.
Someone asked this same question a few months back. Someone replied with this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F41TWAO/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_nZVXub1Z6MWX7
this has been sitting at the bottom of my amazon wishlist for quite some time.
I've been searching for it on Amazon for hours (on and off) and so far I've come up dry.
Edit: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00RSXRLUE/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?qid=1420479673&sr=8-11&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70
You need an adapter. The official one is hard to get because Smash players buy fuck tonnes of them, but you have other options such as the Mayflash adapter which is cheaper and compatible with PC, but apparently not without issues.
What game do you wanna play, by the way ? 'cause I should warn you that GameCube controllers are not compatible with most games on Wii U. Only Smash and apparently some Virtual Console titles.
This is what I did as well... significantly cheaper than the US version and they're the exact same (except for the packaging having Japanese text all over it).
The black one is here for $24.90.
The white one is here for $28.
Prices are at the time of me posting this, of course.
Always go legit for controllers.
$20.xx on Amazon
Target currently has the genuine Nintendo pro controller for $41.99 or you can get a Japanese Import one on [Amazon] (https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Wii-Controller-Japanese-Version-Black/dp/B009AP23NI/ref=sr_1_5?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1482789261&sr=1-5&keywords=wii+u+pro+controller#customerReviews) for $42.90 (It's just the same as a US one but the instructions are in Japanese).
Alternatively you could get a [Wii classic controller] (https://www.amazon.com/Wii-Classic-Controller-Pro-Japanese-Version/dp/B002C1AUP0/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1482789583&sr=1-3&keywords=wii+classic+controller) and attach it to your wiimote as you do the nunchuk.
Grip handles? There were two models of the classic controller: the Classic Controller and the Classic Controller Pro. Those grips aren't detachable.
Nope it's a bit more complex than that.

Hey... there's always this: http://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-Nintendo-GameCube-Controller-Adapter-Wii/dp/B00BS520SG
and the hori pads they run as classic controller pro controllers then which is compatible with N64.
Are you talking about this one?
Amazon says "Take on a more challenging difficulty level" on the list of features, but that's literally all we know. http://www.amazon.com/The-Legend-Zelda-nintendo-wii-u/dp/B002I0GF72/
No, but this one will: http://www.amazon.com/Support-AX88772-UtechSmart-Ethernet-Chromebook/dp/B00F41TWAO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1449093567&sr=8-2&keywords=Wii+U+Ethernet
No. You'll want to buy a PDP wired controller that plugs into the Wiimote if you want that functionality.
> Project CARS
This game has been delayed until late 2015 for the Wii U though. Plus he would have to shell out $60 for this game. NFS is available for $25 at amazon.
I don't think it was ever release day, but I could be mistaken.

USB 3.0 devices work on USB 2.0 ports no problem. What matters here is what drivers are built in on the system, so if a USB 3.0 LAN adapter has the right chipset, it'll work (but operate at USB 2 speeds). I use this USB 2.0 adapter on my Wii U, and this 3.0 adapter on my Switch. The Switch supports both chipsets to allow compatibility with the older official adapter, but the Wii U doesn't support the newer gigabit adapter's chipset.
I have one of these https://i.ytimg.com/vi/CDj3la5Tg0c/maxresdefault.jpg
PDP Afterglow

Pros: It has decent analogue triggers. Battery life not bad.
Cons: the rubber on the thumbsticks will probably tear a bit.
I don't use mine that often, but Mario Kart / Smash mulitiplayer has worn out the left thumbstick and it flaps a bit now, which is annoying.
It's not a terrible controller - good if you prefer analogue triggers, but I would recommend the Pro Controller if you can afford it, you definitely get what you pay for: solid, and insane battery life. I only bought this one (PDP) because I wanted two Pros and the only had one left in the shop.
I ordered this one

I've had no problems with it, battery life doesn't seem as long as an actual Pro Controller but it should be 10+ hours on a single charge.
>"Priced right"
No. They're the most expensive per GB storage drive you can get. My clunky 2TB drive cost me $82 (about $10 more than yours) when I bought it. The load times are negligible since the bottleneck is at the USB transfer speed.
>"is portable"
Why do you need portability in regards to the Wii U? It's not a portable unit. You don't need to consider portability for expanded storage for the Wii U unless you are making a specific portable build, which the average person will not be doing.
No way, bruh. I'm Canadian.

The only thing here that I defend Reggie on is the low memory included in Wii U. I bought a 2 TB for $80 (even though it's $90 right now) and I haven't even used up my 32 GB of internal memory despite buying the console on day 1. One could buy a Deluxe Wii U today (or should I say September 20th) and not need additional storage until next year by which time the cost of memory will be even lower.
To me it's obvious that Nintendo either doesn't care about online/digital or does care but can't figure it out, but the particular fact that Wii U has low memory is unrelated to that discussion.
Splatoon's motion controls are absolutely the thing to use. They let you aim faster and more precisely than what's possible with an analog stick. It's the same sort of advantage over a stick that you get with mouse aim on PC FPSes, but less so.
As for Smash, if you're used to Gamecube controllers but don't currently have one, the Hori Battle Pad is the way to go. It plugs into the Wii Remote (it's essentially a Classic Controller) so you'll need one of those too. If you already have at least one Gamecube controller, get the adapter. This only works with Smash but the Battle Pad works with any game that supports Classic Controllers.
If you have an ethernet jack near your Wii U, get the wired network adapter and say goodbye to unstable or dropped connections in Splatoon!
Definitely, no matter what, get a Pro Controller. I also recommend two Wiimotes and Nunchuks.
This would work if you already have a Wii Remote. But no, you would only be able to use Nintendo controllers and cheap knock offs... no PC controllers on Wii U
I think I actually use this one. It's $11.95.
It isn't licensed, but it works. This is a simple USB to ethernet port- it just carries your internet signal and from what I understand, there is almost no risk of anything happening to your system if it doesn't work or breaks.
I would be much more wary about buying a power supply or charger that wasn't licensed.
Edit: I don't know why I originally posted regarding an adapter for Switch. Fixed it.
A lot of folks seem to have liked the UtechSmart USB 2.0 adapter (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F41TWAO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1), but I had issues with mine. Every time I would start the Wii U it would "lose" the device and I would have to unplug it, delete the network profile for it, plug it back in and set it up again. One day it just stopped working all together.
So in the end I got a "HDE Ethernet LAN Adapter" and have had zero issues. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F41TWAO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
In the end there a number of USB 2.0 Ethernet adapters that will work, but the build quality of the not official adapters can come back to haunt you.
The reply below is misleading, and in fact those controllers do exist and are official Nintendo products. They function as Classic Controllers. Here are some Amazon links:
Hori Battle Pad (I personally like this one better.)
PDP Fight Pad
How far away from your console are you with the gamepad? Are you going through wifi on your console? How far are you from your wifi source?
Also, preemptive- here you go my friend. http://www.amazon.com/Support-UtechSmart-Ethernet-Chromebook-Specific/dp/B00F41TWAO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1426782889&sr=8-3&keywords=wii+adapter+ethernet
I can nearly guarantee that'll help with your problems. I still need to buy one myself, but only for Smash & online gaming. My connectivity otherwise is great, and Netflix's app is just glitchy- they need to make a new one. I'm not 100% certain, but I think the issue with netflix's app is a memory leak or it hits a memory wall after a bit. I've heard clearing the cache on the game console (Google search or search it on this subreddit first, please, to be sure) can fix the "25% loading" issue for a while, and then you simply do it again.
If you use any of the anime streaming sites, I'd recommend Kissanime personally. On PC they have some ads that make sounds which infuriates me to no end, but it doesn't matter since the WII U won't play them. Navigation is simple, just bookmark and away you go.
Unless your connection is just super bad, then....buy the adapter.
After 5.0.0 update my old hard drive simply stopped working with Wii U and would crash it whenever accessed. No Y-cable nor active USB hub helped. Ironically it's now used with my Wii and got one with actual power supply.
If you haven't gotten it yet, you may as well look other model with power supply. If you already did, then you don't have to know what your HD is outputting. It's USB so just simply get USB female to 2x male Y-cable like this.
