Take a look at: http://www.amazon.com/Mathematicians-Survival-Guide-Graduate-Development/dp/082183455X. It offers advice to this question and many others for applying to phd's.

Thank you again for your input!

Just after I enroll again to college I started reading about grad school, read about how it's like to be a mathematician, also Krantz' book: http://www.amazon.com/Mathematicians-Survival-Guide-Graduate-Development/dp/082183455X

You are right, it's very optimistic (and a bit unrealistic) that we will be able to move to another country before I finish grad school.

I have about two years ahead (including thesis) to go. I might PM you if I have some specific questions. Thank you!

Not a bad book. It does a good job at guiding college level people.
