If you really want to understand how all of this works I would strongly recommend you pick up the book Addicted to Love by Jan Geurtz, who is a buddhist teacher. It's the most clear description of the structure of ego and attachment, how it shows up in relationships as a constant subtle and not so subtle need for validation and fear of rejection and how to deal with this though meditation and mindfulness so as to use the relationship as a way towards spiritual growth and freedom. The only two books that are similar I have found by American authors were the writing of Byron Katie and Cheri Huber, but neither come close to the level of clarity and insight that this book provides.
It's a bestseller in The Netherlands and its doing a whole lot towards bringing buddhist thinking to the general public over here. It's a shame that books from small countries often have a lot of difficulty making it overseas.
