In terms of buying new, it's very easy for a cheap sound system to get lost and sound awful if the room is too big.

To look for midrange, I'd probably suggest at least two tops and a sub - maybe something like this:

2x Alto 15" PA Speakers

1x Alto 18" Sub

While there are plenty of options, short answer if you want to spend as much as you can on the PA. In terms of music management - you could even start out with just iTunes or whatever as if you are just playing tracks back to back, you might not even need to go down the DJ route.

How about two Alto TS115as? I own two of these for my mobile DJ setup, I usually play for roughly 200-250 people, and they do fine. They're below your budget and should serve you well.

That's awfully general. What size gig do you intend to play? What type of venue? Budget? What connections do you have in your equipment for external sound? These are all things that affect the type of speakers you will want to get.

Generally speaking though, you will want active speakers so they don't require an additional amplifier. XLR is the preferred connector as it is balanced, has a higher signal strength, and can run longer distances without degradation.

I have these for mobile gigs that don't require a big system. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005FUWTRC/ref=pd_aw_sbs_3?pi=SS115&simLd=1
They sound good, are light considering their size, and were a good price comparatively.
