I still have this old one, given to me, and it works great. I'm scared to upgrade now, based on what I've heard.
The green/blue connectors are called component. The yellow/red/white cables are called composite. Basically, component is a bit superior to composite in video quality.
Nonetheless, if your sisters TV is an old one with no HDMI, you need one of the Rokus with composite cables, I believe. So steer away from the top-tier Roku models and probably look at the Roku LT.

You can get a refurbished Revue for $80 now. And that comes with a nice wireless keyboard and acts as a universal remote. It would be cool to roll your own, but once you factor in the remote receiver and (optionally) wifi, getting a device already made for TV and hacking it is probably a better option.
You can get a Roku for $50.
Apple TV is $99 and is very easily jailbroken so you can put XBMC on it.
Roku LT is only $45 with free shipping on Amazon (brand new). I actually just bought it after seeing the deal on woot. Seems to be the same, but newer and not refurb.
Roku Box on Amazon its barely bigger than a hockey puck.
