Make a gym membership your big splurge. It's worth it. A healthy lifestyle and body is worth thousands. Having a place to shower and store changes of clothes is priceless.

Keep in mind gyms are very expensive in NYC. However price and contracts are actually negotiable. It doesn't hurt to take a tour and then make a polite offer to the recruiter. I.E. "I love this place but my budget is $75/mo. Can we work something out? I'd hate to join gym X instead."

I currently pay $55/mo, no contract, for a cramped torn up gym near my apartment. If you are truly broke, Planet Fitness has $10 monthly memberships. Planet Fitness locations are all out of the way. (125th in Harlem is the closest one I know of.) There are no free weights either so benchpressing and parallel squatting are difficult. Still not a terrible choice.

Buy this tupperware. I couldn't be happier with the look, price, and quality. I save hundreds a month bringing my food with me everywhere. It's much much healthier than pizza and other cheap options. The ladies are pretty impressed when I offer them a homecooked snack/meal from the tupperware in my bag.

Buy a really nice messenger bag. I'm not an expert here but Macy's has some good stuff. Spend $200-$300 if need be. Check out the "buy it for life" subreddit for advice here. You want to look and feel like a real new yorker who lives in the city. A cheap bag will distract from your dress clothes/outfit.

I use anchor. I cook in bulk and freeze everything in meal-sized containers so I don't have to worry about spoilage or spills while I bike to work. The seals work great, and the containers are also dishwasher-safe.

EDIT: I forgot some at a friend's one time and his mom went out and bought some of her own because she tried them and they work so well.
