Over those same 16 years I have been using work issued ThinkPad laptops and have never had a power adapter go on me due to strain relief issues.

Apple has always been a form over function company to some extent. But now I think they take it to the extreme.

For Lightning, I have starter to buy these cables. Kevlar and nylon braided with proper strain relief.

Well, you're flipping your lid over an unverified report commissioned by an entity that apparently didn't exist prior to May of 2016, and has a grand total of 7 blog posts on its website., and little else. The testing lab itself has also only been around for less than 18 months.

Neither have a long track record, And neither actually delved into proving why the phones perform the way they do. They just ran some speed tests and determined that one phone performed only slightly faster than the other, when they think it should perform a little bit faster than that. And based on that alone, they concluded there must be some conspiracy afoot.

But, all this is means is you might reach theoretical 450Mbps on your iPhone instead of a theoretical 600Mbps - thus ripping through a 2GB Verizon data plan monthly allotment in 40 seconds instead of 30, or if you're a big spender, you'll chew though 20GB of data in 6 minutes, 40 seconds, instead of being able to do it in 5 minutes. If that really chaps your hide that much, there are plenty of people who will gladly buy your phone, leather case, lightning cables and MacBook from you.

P.S.: If you stick around, don't buy Apple lightning cables. Better, cheaper options exist.
