For me, its always been Black Friday weekend. I managed to get this for $500 off, with free shipping and a one year warranty.

u/linkuei-teaparty · 3 pointsr/aiprogramming

Really depends on your applications. You'll be running scripts that will be very CPU intensive and having enough RAM would help. If you're running tensorflow then having access to a GPU would improve efficiency.

When posting build threads you'd be better off asking r/buildapc or r/suggestalaptop.

I'll help in the meantime.

  1. What's your budget?

  2. Are you looking for a laptop or a desktop?

  3. What operating system are you working on?

If you're on a budget and familiar with the windows operating system, I'd recommend any laptop with an Intel i7 CPU, 8-16GB RAM with a graphics card.

The DELL XPS15 $1899 $1699 would be a good choice.

Second best would be an Asus Zenbook pro ux501. $1499 $1299

If you're a fan of mac, perhaps a lower range macbook pro [$1349]
    (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0744MHLK4/ref=psdc_13896615011_t2_B0744N99WL) would help.

If you're really looking to make a significant investment, I'd say a desktop would be your best option. Investing in an

  • AMD Threadripper CPU

  • VEGA64 Graphics card

  • ASUS ROG (Republic of Gaming) zenith motherboard
    ]
  • 32GB RAM

would be the best. That's optimised for compute performance over gaming. If you're not into building computers you could get one built by your local computer store. However this system would be upwards of $3000-$5000. This would future proof you for the next 5 years easily.

u/techneeeq · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

You will not find a laptop with 1440p-4K resolution, and very powerful processor without a dedicated graphics card. THIS should be a good choice for you.

  • Excellent Intel Skylake Core i7-6700HQ quad core CPU

  • 16 GB DDR4 RAM

  • 512 GB NVMe SSD

  • Ultra-HD 4K Touchscreen

  • Nvidia GTX960M GPU

  • Thunderbolt III
u/EldritchSundae · 2 pointsr/webdev

16GB is pretty essential if you want to do three of these at once:

  • have a lot of Chrome windows open
  • run Virtualbox, Vagrant, or docker
  • have several Atom workspaces open without restarting it often
  • run multiple dev servers at once in a memory-hungry language
  • run a dev server behind a forking web server to emulate production in a memory-hungry language
  • use Slack at all
  • use Spotify at all
  • use Steam at all

So, an average day for a developer. 8GB won't get you there, at least on OSX. Doing more than 4 of these with 16GB I still have to use MenuMeters, iCleanMemory, Activity Monitor, and kill -9 to keep a handle on my RAM consumption.

If you're looking at splurging on the Macbook, check out the Asus Zenbook, which has identical hardware specs but with a higher rez touchscreen and comes in about 1K cheaper. I've been thinking about getting one and throwing a *nix on it a lot lately.

It's Asus's response to Macbooks, and they make quality hardware and aren't moving in the dev-unfriendly direction Apple seems inclined to this year. Keep in mind that there are some complaints about that model's hinge and hardware problems (hoping they release a better incarnation soon) but that makes getting refurbished models easier and cheaper if you're willing to gamble or go through replacement processes.

I've tried the Chromebook experiment before. I guess I'd recommend committing to it harder than I did if you're going to, or trying it out with a spare monitor and a cheaper Chromebox first to kick the wheels on your workflow. One nice theoretical thing about them is that your setup under one google account will sync to another Chrome OS. However, the whole thing didn't take for me.

Also consider, before investing in a Chromebook, that Google is showing a lot of signs that they're going to (as they are prone to doing with all their tertiary products) ditch the Chromebook OS without notice in favor of a multi-device-compatible Android-style OS instead, à la Ubuntu and Windows phone OSs.

Higher rez displays are red herrings for webdev because while they aren't representative of your average user's experience, that's trivially mitigated by remembering to resize your windows during testing.

If you have the space I recommend setting your browser devtools to appear vertically alongside the site rather than horizontally below it, letting you quickly resize it to emulate narrower screens. You can also, of course, just fit more windows vertically onto your screen, which I frequently do with Divvy and my terminal on my OSX setup.

If you like fullscreening apps and juggling multiple monitors and desktops anyways (as I've started doing of late) the higher rez isn't going to get you much for your buck.

Maybe look into the ASUS Zenbook Pro for $1500. It is extremely powerful and will fit your needs well with a quad core i7 processor, 16gb of ram, GTX 960M graphics card, and a 512GB SSD. It's display is a 4k touchscreen display, and it has a mostly aluminum build.

Unfortunately the battery is not quite long enough for your needs, but it's something to think about.

I would also suggest the Dell XPS 15 but you won't find a touchscreen model with an i7 and 16gb of ram for any less than $2200.

u/HybridCamRev · 2 pointsr/videography

/u/fetoso - I apologize for weighing in late, but I would avoid still cameras (e.g., the GH5) for what you're trying to do. These cameras lack XLR inputs (unless you buy an adapter or external recorders) - and none of them have built-in ND filters if you ever want to take the camera outside.

You should also think seriously about the codec you record to - especially if you ever want to broadcast or project your promotional content in a theater. For that, it would be nice to have a robust 10-bit 4K codec that stands up to a reasonable amount of grading in post (the FS5 has a fairly weak 8-bit codec at 4K - and the C100 is an 8-bit 1080p camera).

With a $30K budget, you can afford more future-proofing than any of these cameras can give you.

That said, I recommend:

u/detroyer · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Maybe the Asus Zenbook UX501? It's 15.6" not 17.3" though.

I'm not sure if the Lenovo Y700 17" is glossy, but it would be a solid choice if it is. Some of the MSI laptops have glossy screens.

The Eurocom Shark 5 is available with a glossy screen for an excellent price, although it's also 15.6".

u/Orangematz · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

What about this?

u/Feisar2003 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If you really want a stylus and tablet mode then the:

Surface Pro 4 + Type Cover $1299 + $129.99 = $1428.99

or

Surface Book $1,457 are the best for you with their great portability, decent processing power, excellent screens and useful touchscreens/styluses. The Surface Book is probably the best out of the two.

If you can forgo these things, the much more powerful:

ASUS Zenbook Pro UX501VW $1499 has a 4K screen, an extremely powerful processor, a 512GB SSD and a dedicated GPU if you ever change your mind about gaming. It seems this one of the computers with the display problems listed in the sidebar.

Dell XPS 13 Has a 3200x1800 touchscreen, ultrabook portability, and decent power.

u/shuckleberryfinn · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Do you have any specific preferences about size, features, etc? Maybe something like the ASUS UX501 would work. Great gaming capabilities but isn't marketed as a gaming laptop.

u/SaneBRZ · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

> ... so something IPS or PVA panel.

Just because a laptop has an IPS panel, doesn't mean that it's decent. There are IPS panels out there with aren't better than low end TN panels in this regard. Here are a few laptops with somewhat decent battery and a good display:

  • Dell XPS 15: different models, different specifications. The model for $1779 with the 1080p display, i7 quad core and the 84 WHr battery has the longest battery life. Up to 9 hours. The cheaper models with the 56 WHr battery can get up to 6 hours. The 4K models always come with a 84 WHr battery, but due to the higher resolution, the battery life is also around 6 hours.
  • Asus ZenBook Pro UX501VW: it has a 4K Pentile panel. Could be a problem. Here is a review, including the quality of the display. Battery life is around 6 hours.
u/Ironbear271 · 2 pointsr/Dell

ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW @ $1499.99. Dell price matched an equally spec'd XPS 15 9550 model for me at that price.

u/not_karma · 2 pointsr/photography

I've been looking at decently powered laptops with good battery life, too. I don't think you should get the Mac as they are about to be updated, and if you're not using Apple specific software, you could get a better spec'ed Windows machine for your budget.

I'm thinking of this:

ASUS Zenbook Pro UX501VW-DS71T

15.6" IPS 4K UHD

i7-6700HQ 2.6GHz (Turbo up to 3.5GHz)

16GB DDR4

512GB SSD

Nvidia GTX 960M 2G

Windows 10 (64bit)

$1,459.99

This ASUS UX501VW-DS71T 15.6" Laptop would be a superb selection for you...! You are looking at a laptop here that is very powerful, super durable, portable , and of course looks very nice. This laptop has a quad core i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, an awesome 512 GB SSD, along with a beautiful Nvidia Gtx 960 dedicated graphics card for gaming. This laptop will run most games - even the intensive ones on medium to high settings.. It has a brilliant screen quality and resolution as well as a solid aluminum chassis... You can also expect an excellent keyboard to type on as well as an approximately 6 hours battery life. The appealing aesthetics and look of this laptop will just have everyone in awe.

u/shopineer · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I agree, with those requirements, the XPS 15 seems like a good choice. Another option could be the [ASUS Zenbook Pro] (http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Zenbook-UX501VW-DS71T-Touch-Laptop/dp/B018AX3OHO) but I think the XPS 15 has better battery life.

Alternatively, the even lighter [Thinkpad X1 Carbon] (http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-x/c/ThinkPadX) if 14" is acceptable, but I think they only have dual core CPUs.

u/Strafingfire · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

I have a very similar model (can't tell the difference).

It's not really for gaming but does other things well. For some reason, I don't get 60 frames on Overwatch on normal during teamfights, so I drop it to low. Display is great although some apps don't scale. If the two models are similar enough, feel free to ask more questions

u/trainedtech88 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

with your budget you could get something way better than a chromebook. you could consider a laptop from either the lenovo or asus line that would be perfect for college. this lenovo has a really great built, a super fast i7 processor, 16gb ram memory, a 1tb hdd plus a 128 ssd and a decent 960m graphics card. this laptop will definitely last you for your years at college and will run all your programs easily. there is also this really decent asus zenbook it houses a really nice i7 quad-core processor, a 16gb ram, an Amazing 512 GB Solid State Drive, a Nvidia GTX960M GPU and both machines have an amazing battery life

u/zaquanimus · 1 pointr/laptops

Alrighty, The ROG STRIX you linked is definitely in my consideration pile. Thanks a ton.

Wish there were an amazon setting for appearance.

Brushed steel like this one is definitely appealing.

u/SleepsAnywhere · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Spec wise this is close to the $2500 MBP 15 while costing only $1500 ASUS ZENBOOK Pro UX501VW-DS71T.

Amazon for some reviews.

i7 6700hq / 16 GB DDR4 / 15.6 IPS Touchscreen (3840 x 2160) / 512GB SSD PCIe / GTX 960m 2GB / Thunderbolt port III

You can go here to look at some benchmarks for the 960m.

If you want to check some other scores, the MBP 15 - AMD 370x, and the Surface Pro 4 - Nvidia 940m.

Destroys the highest end, 2500$ macbook pro, for 1500 bucks. OH, and since its not apple, it actually goes on sale. Most people will pay 1200-1300 for that laptop.

These are the highlights above and beyond any apple laptop:

faster ssd platform, NVMe

thunderbolt 3

newest gen i7

nvidia gtx960

yada yada not aluminum, yada yda osx, yada yada integrated graphics are fine.

Edit: and also, do you really think a laptop with such exact specifications exist outside of apple? Maybe you should base your laptop requirements off your actual needs instead of what apple has to offer. innovative charger? you have to be kidding me...

Please suggest other options that might be good as well. If not any feedback such as pro and cons of the laptops I have considered would be nice as well!

u/LonerIM2 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I would suggest this ASUS ZENBOOK because it comes with Intel Core i7 6700HQ to support your video editing skills, 960M GPU which should be powerful enough for video editing, 4K screen with 3840*2160 pixels just like you wanted, big SSD storage (512GB) for faster booting and and overall performance, and it is lightweight at 5 lbs, and well under your budget.

u/MrJansenEUW · 1 pointr/Laptop

Get the new Skylake version, if any!

u/Ibuildempcs · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Have you considered the Asus zenbook pro UX501?

Exemple of a model: http://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-UX501VW-DS71T-15-6-Inch-Touchscreen-i7-6700HQ/dp/B018AX3OHO/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

Slightly thicker than the MBP at 0.8 inches vs 0.71, the weight is quite close as well but it does feature much better specs for the price.

u/swissarmybriefs · 1 pointr/Filmmakers

he/she mentioned the ZenBook Pro already but here's the link. in terms of form factor it's definitely the closest Windows alternative to a 15" MBP i've seen, great specs too. there's also the Microsoft Surface Book but that's only 13".

u/Antranik · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

The precision 15 7000? it's good but HD instead of SSD option is the only lack. I think I'm gonna go with... this Asus Zenbook tho even though it's slightly higher price range.

u/RenMan208 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

The Dell XPS 15 looks promising. I've also noticed the ASUS Zenbook. This model seems to fit with my desire for a lot of SSD disk space and memory and is (just barely) within my price range. What do you think?

u/The---Technician · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

So for a video editing laptop especially 4K, you will need a very powerful processor, 16 GB RAM, a dedicated graphics card and an SSD would be great. This ASUS UX501VW-DS71T 15.6" Laptop would be nice for you. It comes with a great i7 quad core processor, massive 16 GB RAM, nice gtx 960 graphics card ,fast 512 GB SSD, AND VERY IMPORTANTLY, it has a 4k screen.

If you have no problem spending $2000 go for this MSI Computer GS63VR Stealth Pro 4K-021.

u/Juanambriz · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I am currently looking at the Zenbook as an option and there are a lot of great reviews for it.
These are all the laptops I currently have in mind but can not really decide which would be the best.

This is the closest thing I could find. The only thing it doesn't have is 750 GB of storage but a 512 SSD drive is solid. An external hard drive might work.

EDIT: It's also pretty heavy but that's the price for a killer 4K screen.

u/Flantastical · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Asus Zenbook 501 is a very close option for $1450. Cons are only a 960M instead of a 970M, and a shorter battery life at 4-6 hours.

Another option is a refurbished XPS 15 for $1500 which is almost identical except with a 960M instead of a 970M. Good, 8-10 hour battery life.

Or a slightly lesser XPS 15 but new from Amazon for $1570. If you shop around you may be able to find it cheaper.

u/cowseer · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I can't find any direct comparisons with the XPS 15 but this one looks similar

http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Zenbook-UX501VW-DS71T-Touch-Laptop/dp/B018AX3OHO

You would have to make trade offs if you want a laptop with a 970... battery life being one of them, but heres an interesting option
