M40x is the absolute best sound you'll get at this price, although you'll need a 7.1 usb converter if you want to use surround sound. The desk mic even at this price sounds superior to any headset mic you'll find even at double your budget. Also recommended by Linus Tech Tips in one of his vids.

The ATH-M40x with the pads swapped for the Brainwavz pleather pads are really great even though in price are a good amount under what the 598s normally are. I swap between them and my 598s all the time.

There's quite a bit more bass on the M40x. Highs are somewhat similar, maybe slightly more relaxed on the 598s. I usually use the M40xs for gaming and in loud environments and the 598s when I want my ears to breath (your ears can get hot with no air to go in and out of the can) and just want to have music in the background. I personally like the M40xs more for most music when I want have it in the foreground, but both are great.

There are absolutely some decent gaming headphones out there, but almost all of them sacrifice something in order to keep the price point at bay and to pay for the Dolby and DTS licenses. In my experience, you're almost always better off grabbing a pair of decent headphones and adding a mic to them.

My setup is a pair of Philips SHP9500S with the V-Moda BoomPro mic. Unfortunately, these amazing headphones were discontinued recently, but they were $50 cans that beat out many $200. These are open-back headphones though, which means that you will be able to hear some of your environment around you, but the benefit is that the way sound escapes creates a much wider sound where it sometimes sounds like things are happening across the room. Can be very beneficial for hearing precise movements.

If you live in a noisy environment, then maybe the Audio-Technica M40x are more up your alley. These are regarded as some of the best headphones ever made, used by professionals around the world, and what's even more nuts is that they can often be had for less than $100. Sometimes under $80 if you're willing to be patient.

Both of these headphones also have detachable cables so if they ever short out, all you have to do is change the wire and they're good to go. The BoomPro mic also plugs right into the jack at the bottom of the speaker, so the headphones basically turn into a gaming headset, just with none of the gimmicks and non-sense. Just good, balanced/neutral audio.

Just make sure that whatever you buy, whether gaming audio or actual headphones, you're not paying for fancy tech, licenses, and gimmicks that you may not even find to sound good.

Budget: sub 80$

Source: PC, sometimes smartphone.

Requirements for isolation: prefer open, since they are more comfortable, but open to compromises.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public: no.

Preferred type of headphone: full size preferred

Preferred type of balance: balanced, but i think at this price point I'll take what sounds best.

Past headphones: Reloop RH 10. Liked them very much in terms of sound, but they turned out to be very fragile.

Preferred Music: EDM

Location: Ukraine, but the purchase itself will be probably within the US. Might look at the EU, if the deal is right, not familiar with the market though.

Potential headphones: shp9500(s), OB-1 (really nice price on this one on Amazon 50 bux only), maybe ATH-M30x. Open to new suggestions.

Edit: also looking at AKG K 240 and LyxPro HAS-30, but design wise LynxPro looks like my former reloops, which turned out to be not very reliable. Certified refurbished ATH-M40x deal looks nice, but I've had no experience with this type products.

Thank you for your help in advance :)

I love creating and listening to music and having a good pair of headphones is important to me butttttt so is not spending any more money then I have to (especially on audiophile stuff that is... a lot of times just nonsense).

Amazon has a refurbished audio technica m40x headphones for 66 bucks. I kind of find it hard to justify getting any other headphone. People say the pads aren't amazingly comfortable but they don't bother me really. It is a headphone designed for mixing and studio use that happens to be a great headphone for everything else and it sounds awesome.

Based on that the M40x should be a good choice for you at the $100 and under price point. I can't think of anything else to recommend. Here is a refurb for $77

If you can find the AKG K553 Pro second hand for under $100 they would work.

Also see if you can find some reviews for the Takstar Pro 82. It may be a bit more bassy than you want though.

I'd recommend splitting into separate components.

$150 spent on a mic and cans separately will yield a much better setup than a combo deal.

I would go with a Blue Snowball and a pair of ATH M40x. You can get these with a Bluetooth adapter. They are great cans. Links below total up $160 and will blow away any bluetooth headset.

You can get the same headphones refurbished on Amazon for $77. If you don't want to go lower, I'll probably get these on Amazon.

If you’re willing to go above your budget a little, and isolation is not as important, the Philips SHP9500 is the only one I can think of without a single reservation.

They are comfortable, durable, and replacing or upgrading cables is cheap/easy to find. They are only 32ohm and 101dB sensitivity, so they can run without the need for an external amp if you do not already have one. They offer a wide soundstage and strong bass response, which make them well suited for watching movies and playing games—as well as music.

The only caveat is that they are open-back and therefore do not isolate very well. If you intend to use them indoors or at home, and disturbing others is a non-issue, then I would go with these. If those are considerations for you, then I’d consider the Audio Technica M20x. If you can stretch a bit, or find a refurbished version on Amazon . the M40x is a much better iteration. The Sony 7605 is also great but is about $80.

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x - 80.00 refurb or 99 new at Amazon

u/Imp0924 · 1 pointr/headphones

Planning to get an m40x for portable use. Is this refurbished one trustworthy or should I go for new? Also, how does it compare to the 598's soundwise?

I'm looking to get a headset for ps4. From research I think I've decided on

[Audio-Technica ATH-M40x] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016YKB8ZU/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_urHEzb21CD1VT)

and

Boom Microphone Universal Volume for gaming PS4 Xbox One PC Laptop iphone Android phone to Sennheiser HD598 HD558 HD518 Audio-Technica ATH-M50x ATH-M40x ATH-M70x Headphone with 2.5mm jack(150CM-Black).

Is there anything else I'm missing? I think I need a Y splitter(?) but I'm posting here to confirm if I do or not and if I'm missing anything else.

I also wanted to know if anyone had a better headphone/mic combo for $100 or less.

Thanks for the help!

I'm currently looking at these two

Audiotechnica ath-m40x

MEElectronics Air-Fi Matrix2 AF62

At first I was thinking of buying the first one, but also saw that it doesn't have bluetooth. I'm only buying the second one if its quality justifies it or if it is similar to the ath-m40x, and because I don't know too much about this, I need your opinion on this. Thanks

We all have to work for money. You can get a refurbished M40X for $86 on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016YKB8ZU/). They also sell fairly regularly for $70 or less on r/AVexchange.

u/tocsampsun · 1 pointr/HeadphoneAdvice

Well, at the very least, save yourself $20:

I personally am not a huge fan of the AT M series but they're not bad for the price. The M40X was my favorite of all of them. If $100 is your budget then it's a safe choice. The way I look at it is they're among the best of what the consumer-grade market has to offer, but I wouldn't call them quite on that next level. I would buy with the link above and put that $20 into a new set of pads personally if that's your only option, otherwise, I would save up another 60-80 bucks and grab a nice used HD600/650.
