I don't know about BIFL, but cheap ratchet straps are super handy. I have a set from Costco that is pretty bomb-proof and I think I paid less than $20 for them. Waaaaaay better than bungee cords or twine for damn near everything. Especially securing a load in the back of the truck you use to move into your first home.
Also, a decent headlamp. I have this one from black diamond, and it's great. There are numerous other options from them and other companies (like Petzl). LED is the way to go. It's awesome when you are doing things that require you to cut the power (like replacing a light switch, outlet, light fixture, ceiling fan, etc.). Also great for grilling at night.
