If it means that much to you I'd move, they sound awful. I have to sleep with one of these machines as my walls are thin and my neighbours baby keeps waking me up. Works like a charm, haven't woken up in the night since getting it. I found earplugs uncomfortable for long periods of time.
Do you have a blutooth speaker? There are videos of just fan noises on youtube that you can use. Or just use some headphones. Or if you're really out of options just play it from your phone's speaker.
If you can spare the money, you could get this white noise machine. It has a fan setting.
