You can purchase the actual game part that includes the platform that connects to your console (NFC chip reader) and a few starter characters (NFC tags). But to add new characters, you can purchase characters packs separately that contain 2-3 tags; one for the character and one for the character's vehicle/vehicles.
I haven't purchased the platform (reader), only a few character (tags) packs to acquire the minifig. And since I don't have the game, I had no use for the tags, so I rewrote a few just messing around and testing the app
