I saw someone else in the comments mention Lego Mindstorm; that would be a great idea for your son! Not only is the Lego Mindstorm kit still being produced and supported, but there's an entire professional organization centered around challenging kids to learn to build robots: FIRST Robotics

I'm a recent high school graduate and spent four years on a high school FIRST team. I can't say enough great things about FIRST; they're a really cool program that has competitions for all ages where kids get to build a robot to do certain tasks and then compete against other robots.

The very youngest level is FIRST Lego League Junior. While your son might be just a little bit young for it for now, you could certainly reach out to see if there are teams in your area, and if your son is still interested in robots in a year or two, this would be an awesome way to give him another resource to learn and play with robots.

Here's their website, you can read more about it and sign up to get further information here: https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/flljr

You can also purchase the Lego mindstorm kits on their own, you might need to help him with it and keep him away from some of the smaller pieces, but he'll certainly enjoy watching it move around for now and you can use it to start teaching him how to program with their software. There's a lot you can do with the parts that come with it to get it to drive around, pick up things, etc.

I helped run a summer camp last year centered around Lego mindstorm, and we taught our kids how to make robots that could follow a line of tape using the color sensor, or find their way out of a maze using a touch sensor!

Here's the starter kit: https://www.amazon.com/LEGO-MINDSTORMS-31313-Educational-Programming/dp/B00CWER3XY/ref=asc_df_B00CWER3XY/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=241989243824&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6335113284905928228&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9017517&hvtargid=pla-381559943747&psc=1

And here's their website with the download for the software, as well as some how-to videos to help learn how to program the robot: https://www.lego.com/en-us/mindstorms/learn-to-program

You will need a device that can run the software and write programs, probably a computer or laptop of some sort.

Tell your son he's super cool for already having such a strong interest in robots, I hope he keeps that passion as he grows up! Props to you for looking for ways to support his interests and help him learn more too, that's some A+ parenting right there.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions about FIRST or Lego Mindstorm, I'm a huge geek for this stuff and I'd love to help out someone who's also looking to get into it for the first time :P

Trying again without links:

So, I decided that I don't feel like spending more time on this, and I got most of them, so let's roll with it.
___

Riddle 1

Wine

[Item - Spaetzle Maker] amazon.com/dp/B00004UE89/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2RQMTOPDX95LA&coliid=I3T5XA41NPA20B

So this is kind of a stretch, but hear me out. Over the weekend, I let the "German" in me out, and I cooked a wonderful meal consisting of schnitzel (pork shoulder blade, fried to perfection) and a side of spaetzle (German dumplings). That evening, I also bought a bottle of Roscato (a sweet red wine from Italy) to have with dinner, and it was DELICIOUS. While making the meal and drinking the wine, I mentioned to my wife how great it would be to have a spaetzle maker. She agreed, so it's on the WL.

___
Riddle 2

A doormat (though based on theme it should really be a broom, but that doesn't make sense in your riddle)

[Item - Subaru Floor Mats] amazon.com/dp/B004HGXWXU/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1462GJGC40KP1&coliid=IAIIHKXJYAGUI

So on Thursday I bought myself a new-to-me 2011 Subaru Legacy. It's pretty cool minus the issues with the key, but besides the $100 I had to spend to "fix" it, it's grand. I noticed when checking out the car that it had gray Jetta floor mats. Note that my car has black leather interior, and is a Subaru, not a VW Jetta. I found these, they have good reviews, so I put them on my WL as something to get for my new car so I can get rid of those awful floor mats.
___
Riddle 3

A hat

[Item - Sunglasses] amazon.com/dp/B005P195KU/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=P31L4QN6S6PK&coliid=I2DOHRI12MKZ6T&psc=1

There are two things every good baseball/softball/wiffleball player needs. A good hat, and a good pair of sunglasses. I always wear a hat (thanks a lot, male pattern baldness), so I've got plenty of those (need to get a new one, but Amazon doesn't have the one I want). What I don't have is a good pair of sunglasses for playing ball outside. My aviators are scratched, and, well, wearing aviators to play sports doesn't exactly work well. These are sitting on my WL for that day where I finally go "DAMMIT I NEED SUNGLASSES TO GO WITH MY HAT."
___
Riddle 4

A book

[Item - A+ Cert Study Book] amazon.com/dp/1118324056/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=E9RD1GO4V1KF&coliid=I3I1EOQ0P5X4TS

So this one is REALLY lame compared to my other stories. For this, it's an ACTUAL BOOK (how lame). I work in IT, and one of the most BASIC qualifications for most jobs is CompTIA A+ certification. I know that with a brief refresher I could pass the test pretty easily, but I don't want to take any risks, and would rather study up and blow it out of the water. I need this book in order to help me do that.
___
Riddle 5

This one I'm not sure about, but I can't take any more time to figure it out (thanks a lot, work). A trunk? that seems to make the most sense based on the theme here....

[Item - LEGO VW Camper Van] amazon.com/dp/B0050R0XEG/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2KY51TV5KVQCC&coliid=I1FBGVJXQ9BEYK)

This one is a real stretch. When I went through this the first time, I thought that you were looking for "A car" (boot//trunk//place to store stuff or even hide in), but then when I looked at the theme of everything, I decided that was wrong. I changed my mind and went with a trunk. To combine those two things, here's the LEGO version of a car, which has a trunk, and also has a little suitcase on the top of it, as it is meant for camping and camping activities - a great place to hide away from everything!
___
Bonus

A cape!

[Item - LEGO Movie Batman figure] amazon.com/dp/B002U2UFB0/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2KY51TV5KVQCC&coliid=I2J6HQ9IEA6T9E)

What better way to exemplify the answer of "A cape" to a riddle than with a legit superhero. I actually bought this little batman for a friend of mine, and after putting it together, thought I should have one myself. He has two faces, a cape, the bat helmet, and a batarang. This character is simply awesome in the movie, and looks pretty damn awesome to boot! (Get it? Boot? From the last riddle? ^(I get it ... it's not funny...))
___

No WL Additions were made for this, I improvised and managed to connect everything to something already on my WL. Thanks for the contest!!!

u/slvr13 · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

First off, I think this is the most elaborate contest I've ever participated in, so congratulations for that :P Fear cuts deeper than swords. I hope some of my items are awesome enough for some extra credit ;) Also I wasn't sure if duplicates are allowed. I will revise if necessary.

1.) Something grey and it's been on my wishlist.

2.) Rain, well not technically rain, she is a water bender :P Previously on my wishlist.

3.) Unusual, I think this is something I would use like twice a year. With ice cream or cereal.

4.) Someone else My sister and I want to start playing tabletop games. Previously on my wishlist.

5.) "Book" I took a little bit of liberty with this one because it's a graphic novel. But it's Batman, so...(Previously on my wishlist).

6.) Under a dollar.

7.) Cats There's a catbus in it, which is pretty much the best part of the movie. Previously on my wishlist.

8.) Beautiful As a Star Wars fan having the original trilogy on Blu Ray would be beautiful to me. I love high definition movies, especially ones that are aesthetically pleasing. Previously on my wishlist.

9.) Movie As a Browncoat, I would encourage anyone who has a remote interest in Sci-Fi to give this a chance. Previously on my wishlist.

10.) Zombie tool I don't think this needs explanation.

11.) (Updated) Useful for future. I have a desire to create meaningful video games. Previously on wish list.

12.) Add on I actually had this on my wishlist but removed it because add-on items are lame.

13.) Most expensive As previously stated, I want to be a game developer/designer so not only would it be fun to play with, I could create with it too. Previously on list.

14.) Bigger than breadbox Total in the box it is bigger than a breadbox. Previously on wishlist.

15.) Bigger than a golf ball It's a large book. Previously on wishlist.

16.) Smells good As a guy...I enjoy the scent of lavender.

17.) Safe for children toy I don't think this needs any introduction of why it's awesome.

18.) Back to school drawing helps keep me sane. Previously on my list.

19.) Current obsession I'm a noob to tabletop games. But have been wanting to get into it obsessively within the past month or so. And this also takes my love of A Song of Ice and Fire into the mix. Previously on list.

20.) [Amazing] (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-XBR-65X900A-65-Inch-120Hz-Ultra/dp/B00BSREQI6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1376281533&sr=8-4&keywords=4k+tv) I've seen one of these in person at the mall and it literally made me stop walking the resolution was so incredible. I know it's as expensive as dicks...but man...when these are affordable...

Bonus 2) Made in Oregon I would have put Tillamook Ice Cream, since it's pretty awesome...but alas not on Amazon.

Edit: Changed an item because I saw it won't count because it's a duplicate.

The Joker Steam Roller does come with the Joker. However, the build of the actual steamroller was a little dull. Batman's plane is a good build in that set.

The Batboat Harbor Pursuit is a decent set, but way too overpriced on Amazon. Buy it on Lego's own site if you are going that route.

Gorilla Grodd goes Bananas could be a good choice if he likes mech suits.

Green Lantern vs. Sinestro is a nice little set if he has any interest in the Green Lantern. Batman's space suit in this set will be far different than any one he would already have.

I have not built Black Manta Deep Sea Strike yet, so I cannot comment on it.

Darkseid Invasion is just out of your price range, doesn't include Batman, but does have many other Justice League members. The Amazon price is also a good deal.

Man-Bat Attack is a nice little set if you can still get it for around the $20 MSRP.

The Penguin Face Off would make a good stocking stuffer.

That's just about everything that hasn't been retired and has the price marked up due to limited availability.

I actually do know about building robots, having professionally worked as a programmer and participated in many FIRST robotics competitions.

I don't know anything about Big Hero 6, but looking it up, your son's plan isn't a viable place to start. Lego mindstorms is probably the easiest way for a beginner to get into robotics, and I think it would be a good activity for you and your son. Look at a kit like this one.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CWER3XY/

You can see the basics of what it is in this youtube video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzOza1fO9_8

There are videos of a bunch of other videos on youtube showing creations with it, if you look around.

Slightly more advanced would be getting into something like arduino programming, but that is a bit much for a five year old. Personally I think that lego is the way to go here.

If his interest holds and he wants to go a little further, FIRST even has a jr lego league for kids ages 6-9. I've only helped with mentoring high school teams for FRC, but I am sure it is still probably a lot of fun. You might see if there is a team nearby.

  1. What would be really super freaking awesome is if I was able to go to New York with my SO and either bring the dogs with or find accomadation for them that wouldn't destroy my already dwindled financials. I just really really really wanna see my grandma. It's been way too long and neither of us are really good with picking up the phone and calling. I think I get that from her directly. We joke about it every so often. Anyway, yeah, I miss her a bunch. Plus, there is also my (practically) sister and her family that I also love seeing. But yeah, New York means money or leaving the SO with loads of responsibility which she is not too keen on. Wow, this was much longer than I meant it to be. Almost forgot this was a contest post, woops.

  2. I never added any sets cause they get so pricey. Especially the Star Wars one! And then if you want some of the older ones that too gets pricey because of availabilty! Ya can't win! But why not, added a few of them, not too sure which would be better this Batman and Nightwing set, cause Nightwing or the simpler Wizard set cause yay magic.

  3. Ah, I see. You're using the question marks as a metaphor for what the true meaning of life is in this ever expanding universe. That's real deep man.

  4. I'm part of a team!

  5. Cool, I have done that a few times.

Hey, so if you don't mind my asking, what had/has you bummed? Also, sorry for making this post so long, didn't think I'd just keep typing. I'll stop now, I swear.

Oh, no, wait. Thanks for the contest!

Put simply, retail arbitrage is buying stuff for $(low price) at a brick-and-mortar store (Wal-Mart, Target, etc.) and then shipping it to Amazon for FBA to sell for $(higher price).

For example, say you go to Random Store and find this LEGO set for the ridiculously low price of $5. You go on Amazon and find out "Holy Crap! The cheapest price available through Amazon is $44.44! That's amazing!" So then you'll want to scroll down the page and underneath the "Product Details" heading you'll see that this set has "#203 in Toys & Games" and "#31 in Toys & Games > Building & Construction Toys > Building Sets" next to the line "Amazon Best Seller Rank." This means that only 202 toys in the entire "Toys and Games" department are selling better than this set, and only 30 building sets are selling better. That's a great buy!

On the other hand, you go to another section of Random Store and find this CD being sold for $40. You go on Amazon and see that the other copies available are used and available for $48.98. But scroll down farther and you'll see that the ranking for this CD is "#959,651 in Music." This CD is both way too expensive and not nearly enough in demand to justify purchasing.

That's my understanding of it, anyway, in a nutshell. Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll do my best. :)

legos. my daughter loves them. "dada gos dada GO's!!!!" she is two now and is even better with them, but she loved the gift back then. It is expensive, but if you buy a base along with other sets, it is totally worth it in the long run haha

  2. This Delorean would be awesome. There are multiple builds for it so would be cool to have all of them.

  3. Thank you /u/flyingfresian for informing me of this contest.

I'm a huge fan of Lego but Lepin is actually great for sets that Lego has discontinued. For instance, the Lego Super Star Destroyer was discontinued but you can still find sets from private sellers for over $1000. Lepin has a near perfect knockoff for a hundred bucks. Spend a little time reprinting the STAR WNRS stickers and nobody knows the difference, with a 90% discount. I always buy from Lego when I can, but for something like this I don't mind buying the knockoff.

u/ultimape · 1 pointr/mildlyinfuriating

> basic affordable set with lots of pieces

Not with Lego, although you can find some good collections on ebay.

If I needed lots of pieces, I would get one of these: http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Ultimate-Building-Set-Pieces/dp/B000NO9GT4 or http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Bricks-More-Brick-4626/dp/B005VPRDBS/ (or anything from the "bricks & more" line http://creative.lego.com/en-us/products/10681.aspx )...

Although be sure to do the legwork, some of these go on sale for exorbitant prices. That first one shouldn't be $70 even in a million years.

If you are looking to get sets 'for adults', there is a great collection of them here: http://brickset.com/sets/list-9150 and that whole site has a lot more.

Personally, anything 'cuusoo' is going to be awesome. They are like the reddit of lego set creation: http://lego.cuusoo.com/

u/MCubb · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Ooo this Lego baseplate is $4.99, an add-on item, and would help immensely with my projects! I just got a big set of 650 bricks, but I've got nowhere to stick em! lol

Today will be a good day because I'm halfway done with my school day, and I'm about to eat a delicious lunch!

u/jenni5 · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

im an engineer and as a kid i loved toys that allowed me to use my imagination and that i could use for a long time because they were changable. many of my friends who went on to do robotics etc started with legos and then lego mindstorms (or similar) -- it started as a game, freeform. so i recommend this for Adela.

for Isla, she sounds like she has a lot energy so i thought this dress-up outfit would work for her for actual lessons and just for fun.

u/derper-man · 46 pointsr/robotics

I've spend almost 4 years teaching kids 7-13 robotics, and I can say that at that age you are almost guaranteed to have a bad time with such an open ended challenge. Children that age are simply not capable of realizing how many small problems contribute to the overall complexity of a problem. In order to effectively teach kids problem solving or robotics, it is essential to artificially reduce the complexity of the little problems. For example on our outside robot we have the following very non-trivial problems that are not strictly related to the central problem of, find interesting stuff then investigate:

  1. dirt getting in our robot and clogging it. building stuff that works well outdoors is hard.
  2. sensing different types of soil or surface. this is an enormously complex and expensive thing to do
  3. digging, moving dirt with a little robot is very hard. the complexity of that is crazy.
  4. cost, as a robotics engineering student in college, It would probably cost more than 1000 dollars to have a really good robot to do what you want.
  5. time, kids get bored fast. this kind of problem would likely take an engineer a couple days at least. kids don't focus for that long.

if you wanted to come up with a different challenge that would be easier to succeed and teach with, I would go with something like the following: Cut out a bunch of pieces of construction paper, maybe 1.5 inch diameter circles. mostly brown or grey or black but a few red ones. Stick all these pieces of paper on a table in a random mess, you can even cut up the paper to look like leaves or something, and the red ones to look like ladybugs, whatever works to make the mock up yard feel more real. The idea is to build an environment that is similar to outside, but has much less "hidden" complexity to overcome. Now build a robot that drives around and has a little arm with some tape on it that it can push down on the table to pick up paper with, this way our robot doesn't have to actually dig or grasp objects, which eliminates some of the difficulty of the challenge. This robot could use a simple color sensor, which comes with every Lego NXT kit now to sense the leaf color. This eliminates most of the complexity of our sensor. By using legos we have an easier platform to work with. its not longer difficult for the kid to focus for long periods of time because it can come together faster, and its more toy like. we also have a relatively low cost option, a 400$ lego kit is an amazing deal considering it can be re-configured.

here are some links to robotics kits that you might like. I highly recommend lego for a kid this age, but there are some other options if you'd prefer a toy you can learn something from as well.

Amazon definitely still has stock, 157 listed from 35 USD and up.

If you want one, it's probably good to pick one up now. You might just find discounts elsewhere if you Google around a bit. I actually bought two 31025 sets with a nice discount this morning, those are retired as well here in the Netherlands.

u/behemuthm · 12 pointsr/lego

Jesus Christ that's like $1000 in Lego. Did you buy those yourself or were they presents from others? If from others you should consider yourself VERY lucky.

I received the VW Campervan 10220 from my wife and am gingerly putting it together and really enjoying taking my time with it. What do you do with your completed sets? Do you take them apart and put them back in their box or do you keep them out on display? I live in a small place so I can only have one set out at a time. How quickly do you build your kits? I bought a pieced-together 10179 from bricklink and took it apart and resold it as soon as I finished it. Took me over two months to put together (at night after I came home from work) and I loved every minute of it. But I literally had no place for it so I had to sell it.

I really liked Lego Mindstorms when I was a kid. It's cool because they are easy to assemble because it's just legos and the coding language was pretty simple. It's a graphical block-diagram language that's nice for kids. https://www.lego.com/en-us/mindstorms/learn-to-program

Jackson Galaxy on how to play with your cat.

Grab a 'da bird' toy, I've never known an active adolescent cat to be able to resist it and play with it.

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=da+bird&ref=nb_sb_noss_2

The thing about toys is that they need to be rotated so also grab something like a laser light, just make sure you give it a treat after or your kitty will become frustrated never being able to catch it.

There are also hex bugs, cats love them, they need to be used on wood or lino floors, they run on batteries in random patterns. Just watch that they don't get lost under heavy furniture.

When I was a young thing, a newly minted freshman in high school, I acquired a nickname... Luscious. It was actually from someone seeing the way I licked an ice cream cone and a joke, but 99% of the school population didn't believe that... So I acquired a... reputation

Fast Forward to Christmas of that same year. A thin, slightly cross eyed boy approached me and very clumsily asked if I would go out with him. No, thank you, I said. Over a week he more desperately pursued me until finally I asked him" Why? I don't even think you like me, what is this about?"

Evidently he had already lied and told his buddies that we had gone out on a couple dates ( since they didn't know me, but instead knew OF me ) and that wild sexual hijinks ensued.

So, a la 80s movie, I told him that for a certain amount of money I would take care of his problem. I wrote him a series of notes, recounting in detail our sordid nights. Involving every form of sexual escapade my 15 year old mind could imagine, including one particularly involved thank you for his skills with a large movie theatre pickle.

I put the notes in his books and wallet and asked a friend of his in the hallway to deliver one for me. He became a kind of legend around school, and I got quite a bit of Christmas shopping done.... ;)

I make them buy their own. I pay them to clean their stuff and do various little chores.

My five year old just bought a 50 dollar lego set that he's been agonizing over for weeks. It was fun watching him not buy things...We went in when he had 16 bucks, and he agonized over a 15 dollar set...Then decided to save. Then we went in when he had 30 bucks and he agonized over a 29 dollar set...Then he decided to save. He really wants one of those hundred dollar electric lego train sets but that amount of money is just impossible with his current allowance (months and months).

Still I was proud of him. He did good.

u/ProjectShamrock · 2 pointsr/transformers

I've considered investing in Lego sets. My son has been asking for some that are no longer produced for Christmas...and the prices they are going for on eBay make Masterpiece Transformers look like free McDonalds toys in comparison. However, if I became a multi-millionaire overnight, I'd probably buy at least a few of these bad boys. I already bought this one and spent a day putting it together and it was a lot of fun and the finished product is pretty big compared to most Lego sets. I can't imagine how big the Super Star Destroyer must be.

u/RedSoot · 3 pointsr/gaming

So while looking up the weight to check the cost of shipping I found it on Amazon for $177, which works out around the same price they sold it here for... Can't believe it was only $119 originally! https://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Ideas-Apollo-Saturn-Building/dp/B01MUANC80
But yeah, no rush really. If they can have overstock here then they can catch up on restocking somewhere else faster too.

Oh, thank you! I do, that would be sweet! If you're sure :)

I love that movie! I went to watch it with my 2 friends and got kinda mad because they were on their phones and being loud the whole time. They made fun of me for liking it and said it was a "stupid kid's movie." They knew that from the beginning, so they shouldn't have come! Well, anyways, thanks for the contest!

fear cuts deeper than words

Edit #1 - Replaced #1 #2, #9, #13, #15, edited some text, added bonuses

Okay, so a lot of my items are similar, or are kind of "flexing" the rules, but I will leave official rulings up to you. Here goes!

  1. Something Grey - Strip of magnesium - This actually just got gifted to me. This coal trash can is silver, which is basically grey :D

2)Something reminiscent of rain - Zen Garden - Flexing the rules. It's only related because it's a garden. An umbrella!! I don't have one of these, and I have no idea why.

  2. Food related - Pineapple corer/slicer

  3. On wishlist not for me (this is for my fiancee) - Apple Cider k-cups

  4. A book you should read - Everyone should have the Joy of Cooking

    6)Item less than a dollar - MP3

  5. Something related to cats - This is related because of that scene in "Christmas Vacation" where the cat gets electrocuted

  6. [Beautiful but not useful - Lego adoption of Brandenburg Gate](
    http://www.amazon.com/LEGO%C2%AE-Architecture-Brandenburg-Gate-21011/dp/B0050R0V3O/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=E9RD1GO4V1KF&coliid=I22USNN7FC4LVL)

  7. Movie everyone should see once - Not on wishlist - Harlan County, USA. This documentary is nearly perfect in every sense of the word. This movie is so powerful, and so real, it's just unbelievable. One of my favorites. I always suggest it when someone asks "what documentary should I see?"

  8. Something useful when Zombies attack - Kinect Your Shape Fitness Evolved - You need to be able to Outwit, Outrun, and Outlast.

  9. Profound impact on life - Guitar. I really want to learn how to play, and my dad was going to teach me, but he passed before he was able to. It would mean a lot to share that passion with him even though he's already moved on

  10. Add-On Item - Cat6 cable!!!

  11. Most expensive item -It's actually the guitar, so I went with the 2nd most expensive which is a Logitech G19 keyboard Nope. It's actually this amp.

  12. Bigger than a bread box - Mizuno backpack

  13. Smaller than a golf ball - Not sure if a k-cup would count, but I threw it in there. If it doesn't count, I will find something else It doesn't. Here's some ship and anchor cufflinks I really want for my wedding :)

  14. Something that smells wonderful - Kind of cheating, but a different k-cup. Donut shop coffee is the BEST. Changed to a different beverage. I have a horrible addiction to this stuff, and it smells wonderful (to me)

  15. SFW Toy - Legos are a toy!! :D

  16. Helpful going back to school - I listed the Zen Garden again because it's helpful to have something peaceful when going back to school

  17. Something related to your current obsession - I am OBSESSED with Lorde. I have stated this many times over the last week.

  18. Something amazing/awe inspiring - SERIOUSLY. LOOK AT THIS FUCKING CHAIR. THIS MOTHERFUCKER RIGHT HERE? THIS SHIT FOLDS UP SO YOU CAN CARRY IT. NOT GOOD ENOUGH? SHIT, SON. THIS BITCH HAS TWO ARMRESTS FOR YOUR LAZY ASS. STILL BITCHING? GUESS WHAT DICKLIPS, THIS BITCH HAS TWO CAN HOLDERS AND A FUCKING COOLER. YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO GET YOUR BITCH ASS UP TO GET A DRINK, BAM, YOU ALREADY GOT ONE. IT EVEN HAS A POUCH TO HOLD YOUR OTHER SHIT, IF ALL OF THIS ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH. YOU NEED TO HAVE THIS CHAIR.

BONUS #1 - I looked through your reddit history (not very hard, but I did look), and came up empty, so I'll just post something later that might fit.

BONUS #2 - These blankets are made in Oregon, and look SUPER cool. Not on my WL (I have more than enough blankets), but I really like them.

I may attempt the bonuses tomorrow, we will see. This is definitely a placeholder until rulings on some items are made. Fix'd :D

A lego birthday party would be awesome. I'll think of some ideas for the lego party but I know that everyone needs these lego 'floor' plates. You always need a strong foundation for your lego creations and as we all know the floor sucks. There are other colors and sized to choose from.

u/keechie · 1 pointr/lego

I have both the 9493 and the 8088 and I preferred the 9493. I thought the build was more interesting including the mechanism to make the wings open and close. And I love the minifigs in the orange jumpsuits from the original trilogy and you get Jek Porkins.

I was told I wasn't approved to comment??? so I'm resubmitting, sorry if you can see the other one.

The lego board games are surprisingly good for a seeming money grab. I suggest Minotaurus. the hours and my brother and I have put into that game is incredible. a nice bonus is that you can change some rules and the map. I also realized you don't even have to buy it if you have the pieces.

http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-4568196-Minotaurus-Game/dp/B002WCNKUQ (you cant buy it on the lego store, and its beng retired soon so buy it fast if you do.)

Well it really depends on what you want so here's some random stuff.

u/Bobby_Marks · 1 pointr/Frugal

My son is getting a big bucket of LEGOs for Christmas: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005VPRDBS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3A75OQHMPSD3E&coliid=I37OLSCHT22HUG or http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Ultimate-Building-Set-Pieces/dp/B000NO9GT4/ref=pd_sim_t_6

It's going to be a long lasting toy that helps him learn and be creative, and most importantly they aren't exhaustible like art supplies are.

As someone who grew up poor with two brothers, I can definitely say that Christmas can be done better and more cheaply with one great group gift, than with a bunch of smaller gifts for each child. Also, Goodwill tends to have $1 toys and presents right around the holidays. It's not new, but IMO parents do their children a disservice by teaching them to expect new things.

u/armada127 · 2 pointsr/videos

This might get buried in the comments, But I would just like to point out that there are two versions of each model; a more realistic expensive one, and a more play-set like one that includes mini-figures.

  • The realistic Star Destroyer (the one shown in the video) is actually close to $2000.

  • The Death Star, however is the play set one with the mini figures so it's only $400.

  • There is also a play version of the Star Destroyer for $400

  • And a model version of the Death Star for $1200.

Edit: LEGO is expensive, I've been playing with LEGO play sets since I was about 4. There is a lot of work that goes into these toys and it's kind of sad that they seem to be dying compared to the video game generation (not that I'm against video games, I love video games, I just also like LEGO a whole lot.)

Edit 2: My mistake, this is the one in the video which is $400.

    fuck.
u/phat1forever · 1 pointr/weightlifting

Yea, it is crazy how much they cost. I really wanted the Super Star Destroyer as it is over 4 feet long and as such, HUGE. But, I didn't have the money then to shell out like $500. Now it is more expensive and well, I don't have the time as much. Also, I want to clarify I am not really a Star Wars guy, I just like lego sets that are really big.

u/AmberxAltF4 · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

:O HOLY COW! I honestly did not realize that. I've never actually played a lego board game (nor did i realize they existed until this thread), so I just assumed they were board games with Lego branding! ^^^I'm ^^^so ^^^ashamed. This is a cool looking game! :)

u/eqleriq · 2 pointsr/tifu

I'll need to see a paper of your experiment's results.

Rigid plastics clearly add that level of risk that they snap off, perhaps that is enjoyable.

How did you find the bottleneck of a beer bottle? Is that better than a Wii-mote?

Personally I found the washing of the Wii-mote to be a hassle, though wrapping it in plastic wrap allowed me to smother my face in it afterwards.

Also, there are these toys called hexbug nano that come in a sort of test tube. The interesting thing about it is that the toys themselves are small vibrating motors that skip around on a surface. But what you can do is turn them all on, then put all of them from the 5-pak into one of the tubes and it feels like a tiny asian pianist practicing on the walls of your turd palace.

But beware, make sure your anal insertion pliers have a good grip on the edge of the tube or that will be a difficult trip to the ER.

TLDR: your story makes no sense because you wouldn't bother fishing the thing in your asshole out, the one thing in your story that's already hidden and you remove it adding it to the list of "shitty things daddy can see" rather than hide more? herp derp, obviously go in your room or the bathroom and lock/close the door after ending the porn and grabbing the towel. But sure, what you did is totally real

u/NoMan999 · 19 pointsr/autism

You know how with Lego some kids carefully follow the instructions in the booklet and others just use their imaginations and build random stuff?

Well, some grew up as adults who can easily build Ikea furniture, but that's not the point. The point is that there isn't one specific way to play with toys. Some will use dolls as action figures while others will sit Batman, a T-rex and a car around for a cup of tea.

As for your brother, he'll grow up to become the target demographic for this and than (NB : don't buy from the second link, it was originally sold for "only" $300 or so.)

I don't have parenting advice as I'm not a parent and not an example to follow as a child, but maybe try to work on his strengths rather than his weaknesses (ie. teach him how to read and write rather than try to force him to speak.) Read him books while showing the text and images maybe?

Here is an extreme example: http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Star-Super-Destroyer-10221/dp/B0050R0YB8?

This set retired this past June, with a retail price of $399. Six months later the price has almost doubled on Amazon(sales rank 22,000 so these things are selling at that price), with sold listings on ebay between $5-700.

The popular brands are usually a safe investment if you can wait months for a return. Star Wars, Spongebob, Marvel, DC, Harry Potter, etc. Even better if it's a popular part of those brands(Hogwarts castle, Death Star).

Lego even keeps a list of items they plan on retiring soon here: http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Retiring-Soon

u/AllGoldGold · 7 pointsr/evilbuildings

This 2,169 sq. ft. house made of lego took 10,079,829 pieces. Which comes to 4,647 pieces per square foot.

Per Wikipedia the Chang-Gu World Trade Center is 896,700 sq. ft..

So that would require 4,166,964,900 lego, not accounting for any structural differences between building a skyscraper and a 2 story house.

You can get 790 pieces of lego on [amazon](LEGO Classic Large Creative Brick Box 10698 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NHQF6MG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Y5ktybPNSBE3D) for 46.99.

So roughly $247,855,291 in materials alone to build a building that size out of lego. I wouldn't call that being cheap.

(Please feel free to check my math, I have a degree in history math is not my forte.)

u/xIrish · 2 pointsr/houston

All of the LEGO stores in the Houston area are roughly the same size, I'm afraid. If you're looking for particular parts, you could use a site like Bricklink, but it's not exactly an easy site to navigate. You could also buy something like this from Amazon--I can't recall seeing them in the Woodlands or Galleria stores but I also wasn't looking for them, so you may want to call and check.

Lol. Now it’s $105.66. Look at all those savings!!!amazon deal LEGO passenger train (60051)

u/Wampitty · 2 pointsr/nottheonion

They’ve always carried some version of the basic brick box. Here’s one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00NHQFA1I/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1520371787&sr=8-1-fkmr1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=lego+basic+deluxe

That’s about 7c per piece at MSRP, which is significantly less than the average 10c per piece in non licensed theme sets and ~12-14c in licensed sets.

They’re just not heavily advertised because they simply don’t sell that well. Consumers like the themes and licenses and more unique parts. And that’s not to say you can’t just build whatever you want out of the pieces in a themed set - people do that all of the time just to chase down more unique elements.

u/Timzor · 2 pointsr/pics

That simply isnt true, there are heaps of sets of generic peices.

Heres one http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Bricks-10662-Creative-Bucket/dp/B00AWBLS80/ref=dp_ob_title_toy

And this one here http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Bricks-More-Brick-4626/dp/B005VPRDBS/ref=sr_1_638?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1416663306&sr=1-638

As well as a huge selection of pre designed sets made entirely of generic peices. Now granted the selection is not huge but people are happier buying the designed sets and mixing and matching those bricks, and besides, you can always just buy a few sets and throw away the boxes/instructions if you're that concerned about your childs lack of imagination.

Baseplates is correct, yes. Bricklink has a very useful parts catalogue. There's quite a lot of these, sorted into three categories:

plain, http://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?catType=P&catString=2

raised, kinda useless for general building I think, http://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?catType=P&catString=243

road patterns, http://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?catType=P&catString=130

Both the parts and shipping can get expensive for what they are. Me, I just tacked one onto an order from Amazon... 32x32 Lego studs, which is 10x10 inches, six bucks.

I used to get the magazine from Lego and was part of the club. I've wanted this set since it first was in that mag. Back when they made it it was only almost 300. Now look at it. This is probably one that I will always keep wanting but never get to have. This is like my lego crush! I also wanted the imperial star destroyer version too. I may have these two mixed up even but look how pretty that is. drools

Lego Makes Creative Brick boxes that run 30-60$ USD

Medium Size - $30- 484 pieces

Large size - $60 - 790 pieces

ALSO, hotwheels has a car that will take lego minifigs: LetsGO

u/Sm314 · 15 pointsr/funny

You think that's cool?

Try this

1.2m long super star destroyer.

Or you could get the larger Death Star.

  1. Having LEGO at my new place would be awesome. I had to leave all of my LEGOs at my parents when I first moved out, and really regret that decision.

  2. Yay LEGO!

  3. !!!!!!!!!

  4. I'm part of a team!

  5. Okies!
u/Corm · 3 pointsr/robotics

I want to second the lego robotics

https://www.amazon.com/Genetic-Los-Angeles-6029291-Mindstorms/dp/B00CWER3XY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467523827&sr=8-1&keywords=lego+mindstorms

And legos in general. But definitely some form of programable motion, which lego robots provides

u/watsoned · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

LEGO? LEGO? THIS IS A PLACEHOLDER COMMENT. I WILL BE RIGHT BACK AFTER I NARROW DOWN A SET CHOICE.

CAUSE FUCK YES, LEGO.

Oh, and raffle phrase "Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen"!

ETA: This Creator set would be great! It's hard to narrow them down cause there are so many great ones. and sadly this one is too much.

The last thing I built? Was a little mini AT-ST that came in a set that /u/Qu1nlan got me!

u/kevinstonge · 2 pointsr/pics

They aren't bad ... this is $50 for 800 pieces. Now, 800 pieces sounds like a lot, but if you have this box in front of you it's not all that much (lots of 1x1 and other tiny pieces). It's not bad, like I said, but for $50 it's just a bucket of plastic made with manufacturing technology that's been in place for decades. The prices are inflated due to brand recognition only. Then the kits have even more inflated prices due to double brand recognition (e.g., LEGO + Star Wars!)

u/Mithious · 1 pointr/funny

You've always been able to buy both designed sets and tubs of LEGO for building whatever you want.

e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000NO9GT4

Some people like using their imagination, some people prefer following instructions.

u/CanadianHo · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

thats why i would rather buy the creator packs like this one then my kiddos can make whatever they want

u/jojewels92 · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Legos are the best. Check out that camper, the one of my dreams.

u/7h3Hun73r · 4 pointsr/funny

They have a marvel helicarrier Lego that is $380! And that's not even getting into the adult collectors level legos

Here's a more affordable Imperial Destroyer

Sith Super Star Destroyer

It just saddens me that I'll never have enough disposable income to be able to afford these things.

Lego offers actual sets of the most iconic DC buildings:

u/troyunrau · 1 pointr/hockey

I recommend this one... relatively cheap for lego (6c a piece)

Saturn V

I already have it... it is sitting above my TV where the Jets are losing...

u/bravo632 · 2 pointsr/dubai

If it's really that difficult to find then your best bet is Amazon.com

Or else contact Lego/LegoLand Dubai.

i've seen MISB out of production lego sets go up in value. afaik, lego isnt too huge on re-issuing past products

here is a nice example

this might change eventually but as it stands now, legos can be a decent investment for collectors

u/StarGone · 24 pointsr/videos

You are not their target audience with this. I know parents who immediately see the value in teaching their young kids how to follow instructions to build something (LEGO) and then there is the fact that the game also teaches basic coding logic (Scratch Studio) while also combining the coding within the projects (LEGO Mindstorms)

While Scratch Studio is basically very cheap, LEGO sets and Mindstorms can range in the hundreds of dollars versus Nintendo Labo which is $80.

u/Trick0ut · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Here buy him this, all the fun he will have with it should distract him from throwing his food on the ground!

u/killfluffy · 2 pointsr/lepin

That x-wing came off eBay. I think it's either a Lele or Lepin version of a 90's era Lego set. This is the set:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Star-Wars-X-Wing-Fighter-Model-Building-Blocks-Kit-Kids-Children-Toys-Gift-/152230548445?hash=item2371a5d3dd:g:qrkAAOSw-kdXzR7X

Don't spend more than $20 on it if you buy it. I got mine for like $11 including shipping. There are a lot of sellers who offer this set but, the number of them available tended to rise and fall when I was watching it. One week there were none, another week there were dozens.

EDIT: This is the discontinued Lego brand version: https://www.amazon.com/LEGO-X-Wing-Starfighter-Discontinued-manufacturer/dp/B005VPRG3S

u/dizzyvonblue · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

LEGO MINECRAFT that item looks mighty fine!

u/m4xdc · 22 pointsr/StarWars

and the astronomical cost of legos

edit: ~$1100. that's more than my car is worth at this point ;~;

u/foodforthoughts1010 · 1 pointr/DarkNetMarkets

K'nex do sell sets that are intended to be build. Such as their roller coasters. Lego does the same. But Lego also sells boxes of a large assortment of pieces that are intended to use to build whatever you want. Proof? K'nex set lego assortment

u/Aperture_Kubi · 2 pointsr/sysadmin

Ok, so these large Lego boxes represent our VM hosts. The Lego inside of them are all our VM guests. There's no reason why you can't take something from one host to another, because all the hosts can stack (proceed to put those storage boxes on top of each other, because they're built for that).

u/Sheep604 · 2 pointsr/ActionFigures

On the other end of the spectrum, I do like the Lego version as well (I have the Ghostbusters vehicle set) but not sure if that counts;

https://www.amazon.com/LEGO-DeLorean-Building-Discontinued-manufacturer/dp/B00DQC2FPM

u/oldsillybear · 8 pointsr/business

We ordered a 400 piece set from Amazon (several, actually). My wife used them for a lab she was teaching at the local college - something about molecules.

Note: 400 pieces isn't as much as I remembered. I must have had thousands when I was a kid.

Indeed you can, but the amalgamation of the two is not quite as good as either on it's own it seems.

u/Grphx · 1 pointr/IAmA

You have a two real thin flat 10x10 pieces stuck together. Without any special lego specific tools, how do you remove those two pieces?

u/ShinyEggWhite · 6 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

You can still buy "classic" boxes of Lego that have no model associated with them and are just a bunch of random bricks in different colors. Example.

u/Cayou · 5 pointsr/france

u/I-HATE-REDDITORS · 3 pointsr/StarWars

Forget about the LEGO website.

Just get this unless he has it already. You can't go wrong. It's one of the two most iconic ships from the original (most universally-loved) trilogy.
