Reddit mentions of Batman Adventures

You've already got a lot of great recommendations, but if also like to put forth The Batman Adventures, which is the comic version of a Batman the Animated series. The original run was compiled into two books that cost about $20 on Amazon

If he's into Batman at all, the tie in comic for the 90's Batman Animated Series is fantastic and very all ages. The trades aren't in print right now, but I believe I saw something about them reprinting them soon. Here's a link to the older printing of the first volume:
