I use one of these.

I have about 10 books bagged and boarded in each of mine. It would fit more if I didn't use fullback boards.
I am moving tomorrow and was so hoping that your question would be geared towards that situation for my convenience :) I'm worried about damaging them during the move.
For your situation though, one of these would probably do the trick. I picked one up for carrying comics to work with me and have not had any issues with wear or corner bend. The issues I carry are bagged & boarded.
I have a couple of these in a backpack, and they work great: http://www.amazon.com/BCW-Comic-Book-Storage-Portfolio/dp/B002AT8QKU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1427502294&sr=8-1&keywords=comic+book+holder
Oh see now that would be nice. I found this, which is nice enough, but it looks like you just put the comics in there in a group. But if you could have each comic in its own sleeve, that would make it very easy for you to dig through and find the one you want. Especially useful if you're in the middle of a series and don't want a bunch of books spread all over the coffee table.
I asked this question a few months ago and was directed to this portfolio. I got it last March and it has been great to carry comics and collections. It was a great recommendation.
I like using the BCW folios like this
i use these for cons - may be a little bigger than you're looking for, but they do the job quite nicely.
You'd be amazed at the number of bumps and hits a backpack/string bag will take. Even when bagged and boarded, to avoid damage to your books, have something with hard sides. I haven't used this one personally, but it's a suggestion.
A plastic top loader is the next best thing besides getting the comic graded. These are also really nice for transporting comics at shows:

Fair enough. Just a thought to keep them all together and easily displayed.
But maybe some of these instead:

I know people use them at cons for sig gathering, but don't see why they wouldn't work on a shelf too.
You can get one off of Amazon for $12.

Try This
Everyone's got good idea, but really if you want piece of mind, you'll pick up a few of these guys.
Once I threw the books in those and them into a duffle bag or backpack, you got nothing to worry about.
Also, for conventions or signings, I have used this Comic Folio to safely toss both single issues and GNs in a backpack.
Depending on how many you're taking, this could do the trick:

It could even go right in your carry on.
Edit: I should've read everything more thoroughly. While this could still do the trick, you'd probably need a couple of them.
BCW makes exactly what you're looking for.
Alternatively I would recommend these: http://www.amazon.com/BCW-Comic-Book-Storage-Portfolio/dp/B002AT8QKU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420382080&sr=8-1&keywords=comic+book+stor-folio
I would suggest buying a stor-folio. They are PERFECT for carrying books at conventions. Here is a link
Also, be aware of the market on certain books. eBay is your friend. Use it to your advantage when dealing with dealers. If they have a book priced at $400 and you can buy one in the same condition on eBay for $250, bring that to their attention. Conventions always have inflated prices.
Yep, just found the link here. Not a bad deal at all! I'll probably pick a few of these up just for when I go to comic shops and pick up some floppies.
Definitely bag and board your books, I use a basic binder that zips shut though these were recently recommended to me. On books that you want signed a trick I've picked up is to bag and board it but cut a hole in the front of the bag marked with colored tape, that way it's signed where you want it.
As to who charges for autographs, this tends to vary. In my experience big names (Sterenko, Lee, Claremont etc.) charge anywhere from $10 to $100 where lots of others don't charge at all or ask for donations to charities they support. Roy Thomas signed several of my books for $10 at a conference I went to back in March.
As to grading, I personally do not slab my books because I still love to read them, even my old silver age stuff, though I am considering getting my Stan Lee signed books graded. I would talk to a rep at the convention about the cost and turnaround time.
I usually only collect trades but there are some that have never been collected so I use these BCW Stor-Folio boxes to keep them on a bookshelf. I like to make my own artwork for the front and spine.
I’ve never done it, but I see these little carrier things that look like they hold about 10 floppies. They look like giant wallets or something that would hold a car manual.
Edit:
Here’s one.
