I found a great book! I don't know why I didn't remember it right away. Be Who You Are by Jennifer Carr is accessible and explains many of the questions kids might have. Here's the Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Who-You-Are-Jennifer-Carr/dp/1452087253
Generally, kids are among the most immediately accepting, in my opinion. My daughter's classmates have found this book helpful in understanding adults in transition, and this one does a pretty good job in creating actual empathy around the internal experience of being trans.
