We mostly have the 'large dog' sized, beds, because like you said the extra large ones are fairly hard to find. Remy doesn't seem to mind, and we let him take naps on our bed anyway.
I looked around a bit, and found this site which seems to have some pretty decent sized beds, although they're quite a bit more than the smaller ones you'll find at your average pet store. Amazon also has a few but some of them are out of my budget!
I've also heard a few people on this subreddit mention they've purchased futons as dog beds. If you've got the room, you might consider it. I know they make kid-sized ones too, which might be a little easier to squeeze into your space.
