Definitely check it out The Diabetes Solution, but know it isn't the quick primer on the basics of diet and treatment that you might be looking for. It's more of a prescription for a treatment plan that is centered on eating a strictly low carb diet (<25g/day). It's also very in depth, at over 500 pages. It does wonders for a lot of people, but it may not be what you're looking for in this case.
For a shorter, more general read I would recommend something like this book, which is actually highly recommended by Dr. Bernstein as well.
