Conclusion

This list may seem like a lot of stuff, but my bag always had space in it. I was constantly buying souvenirs for friends and before my flight back, I loaded up on stuff. I never struggled to close my bag. I was between 11kg and 15kg depending on what shoes I was wearing, how many gifts I had, and how much liquid I had. This might be a bit much if you're smaller or out of shape, but I appreciated and used everything I brought. I never felt over-encumbered.

The Osprey is pretty close to the perfect size. It doesn't look too bulky and it fit in every carry-on compartment. When I flew RyanAir, I paid for the carry-on the first time, but after that I realized it can pass for a normal-size backpack and no one ever questioned me.

It took up extra space, but I'm glad I brought two pairs of shoes. The leather sneakers were more formal and versatile. They worked well for going out at night and working out. The boots were better for days with lots of walking and walking outdoors or on uneven ground. I tried using the sneakers for long day trips twice. The extra cushioning in the boots was the difference between throbbing feet at the end of the night and not. The Rancourts are my first foray into quality footwear. I'd never spent that much on shoes before and I don't regret a penny of it. They've aged like fine wine and they're going to last for another decade.

Changes I'd make:

  • The first is blue jeans. All my professors and older relatives told me no one wears blue jeans in Europe. I didn't realize what a load of malarkey that was until I got there. It is true that shorts aren't very common in Western Europe though. I'd have brought one less pair of shorts and added a pair of light-wash Levi's 511's.

  • I put all my books on my Surface in eBooks. It was fine for reading in hostels/on transit, but eBooks aren't the same as turning pages, and I wasn't bringing my laptop on my day walking trips. There were lots of occasions where I found myself in a quiet, picturesque area, and I would've loved to crack open a book and read in the nice environment. Not bringing a physical book or two is my biggest regret of the trip. Next time I'll probably travel en route without them and buy one or two in a thrift store when I get there.

  • This probably goes against r/onebag's belief, but I wish I'd brought one really nice shirt to use only a few times. There were a couple occasions when I went out on dates or by myself to nice restaurants and bars, and my linen button down wasn't matching the vibe of the joint.

  • I'd probably bring a bluetooth speaker next time. There were some instances where I was on my own somewhere private, or in a hotel room and wanted nice music. Something small and quality like the Bowers & Wilkins T7 would be perfect.

  • The iPhone takes good pictures of subjects nearby, but lacks when trying to capture sweeping landscapes. I wish I'd brought a digital camera. Next time I think I'll get something compact and quality like the Sony A7.

    Standouts:

  • The battery was obviously clutch, but I was surprised how often I found myself using the headphones. Anytime I used the metro I had them on, except the bus in England. Now that's a cultural experience.

  • The boots, like I mentioned before.

  • The sunglasses. I can't believe how much of a beating they handled.

  • Google Translate Offline - I downloaded the language for every country I visited and this got me out of two sticky situations. Also, locals appreciate if you at least make an attempt to say hello, thank you, and goodbye in their language. Even if the rest of the conversation is English.
