Edit: forgot my links- stupid me. And they were all lined up in the tab bar. In a post about anal sex, most of these are NSFW, but surprisingly, the "doody" one isn't. Stand by...

A few basics that I feel should be obvious, but may not be:

  • Anuses and colons tear inside and out much more easily than vaginas and the subsequent opening

  • The vaginal canal is always going to be more accommodating length and girth than the anal one, unless you have a condition that prevents it from functioning in that way.
  • Always use a condom or a glove with the butt, because who likes bacteria that can make you sick? Condoms and gloves should only be used with lubes that won't break them down.
    • Latex toys and protection should not be paired with oil based lubes

Now for actual advice. Always use more lube than you think you need, and don't not use lube until you're pretty experienced (talking about stationary toys here). Always use it for penetrative sex where there will be thrusting. You do not want something to tear in there, unless you want bacteria in your blood stream. If, after anal play, there is a TINY amount of blood, you will be fine- but consult a doctor if you're uncomfortable. If there is more than an eighth of a teaspoon of blood, definitely seek medical attention. Others will disagree here, use discretion. Oh, and make sure you don't use numbing lube, your body needs to feel pain for a reason.

Always go slow. How slow? anal safety snail slow. Always stop if you feel pain. You will most likely feel pain the first time you insert something, even something small- relax your sphincters. You know how a T shot hurts more if you tense up? Same sort of problem(ish). A great way to start is with a finger, small toy, or sharpie (not the cap end, and don't let go!). Starting on your own will probably be preferable, so you know your limits before your parter gets involved. Don't forget lube!

If you want to use a toy, I HIGHLY recommend a buttplug. If you shop around, you can find them in sets of varying sizes. With those, you can start with the small one and work your way up to the size of a standard phallic object or larger if you like (Doing so will make penetrative sex easiest). When selecting said buttplug, make sure it has a WIDE, STURDY base. If it's not both wide and sturdy, you might find yourself in an awkward ER visit. During orgasm, your butt muscles contract a lot and can vacuum things inside. This can also happen if you sit on a toy that doesn't have a sturdy base. As the commenter below mentions, stay calm, and try to force it out. As a beginner, you'll probably also prefer ones that are very smooth without too many angles and knobs and ends. Other than that, make sure you know what material it's made out of. If it's vague "lifelike material" without giving you a chemical makeup, don't get it. I'll write a guide to the materials below if there's interest. Personally, I like certain jellys and metal.

When you get down to the dirty with a partner, dildo, strapon or penis that's connected to someone by human tissues, use even more lube and reapply frequently if you're using the types that dry out. You'll probably know the second you need more, but sometimes in the heat of the moment you'll forget- try not to. If you go too long, it's usually a good idea to switch condoms because there's a lot more friction with anal sex than with vaginal sex. Put it in slow on the first stroke, even if you're warmed up with toys/fingers etc. If you're clean enough, my favorite warmup is rimming if a partner is down. I've yet to find a person (IRL) who's into anal who hasn't liked it, but to each their own. If it's your first time, keep going slow until you know your limits. Don't forget to relax those buttmuscles!

Make sure you don't need to shit before anal. Usually doing the doody an hour or two before hand will make things a-okay. If you're still uncomfortable, you can use a fleet enema that will clear your inner colon. There is no pain or discomfort that is associated with the enema your grandma talks about. Standard enemas are okay too, but they take much longer and clear out your whole system. You'll also probably then want a shower. Enemas are a great form of anal play, but that's going to be a different story. That said, there will sometimes be poo even with all precautions taken. Just laugh it off and wash it off (with an antibacterial soap). Sex is silly anyway.
