The cheapest solution would be to get a [$50 lavalier mic for your iPhone] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KMCC0G8/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00KMCC0G8&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) [Referral Link] and use it with a free audio recording app such as [Rode Rec LE] (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/r-de-rec-le/id590021166?mt=8).

With multiple lavs and phones, you can mic each person in the scene, then mix and sync their dialogue in post.

If you prefer to use a purpose-built audio recorder, you can get a high quality (but still relatively inexpensive) external recorder such as the [<$100 Tascam DR-05] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0090XX0MS/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0090XX0MS&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) (even less after the [$25 Tascam holiday rebate] (http://tascam.com/content/misc/universal/tas_rebate_1411_ee.pdf)) - plus a [~$175 mic/boom kit] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ISETFJW/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00ISETFJW&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) [Referral Links] to get the mic closer to your talent/subjects.

Good luck!

Hi /u/thinkonthebrink - at your price point, I would consider the [~$335 Canon EOS M with the 22mm f2 lens] (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Compact-Systems-Camera-3-0-Inch/dp/B008NENG1A/?tag=battleforthew-20) for good low light performance.

Add a [$50 Bronstein TRRS low noise lavalier microphone] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KMCC0G8/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00KMCC0G8&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) plugged into an iPhone or iPad running the free Rode Rec Lite recording app, and you can record high quality audio for not a lot of money.

It will be a bit of a challenge to marry your soundtrack to your video in the editing suite, but that's how the pros do it.
