So I really like the Wirecutter gift guides. Here's the 1 year-old guide and the 2 year-old guide. They have toys in a bunch of different budgets. From those guides, I got my daughter the piggy bank and the Crate and Barrel chair.

For a big present, assuming you have the space, here are some options:

  • A kid-sized table and chairs. She'll start to want to draw (well scribble) and color (also scribbling) or play with smaller toys and it's nice to give her a place to do that that's the right size.
  • Some sort of scooting toy. The hopper in the gift guide is one, we got this giraffe scooter. Size can be an issue, so you might want to look at a couple.
  • One of the play kitchens or work benches is good as a big present. This IKEA kitchen is popular, although it doesn't come with a lot of stuff like pots and pans or fake food.
  • If you're handy at all, an activity table (here's an example) or an activity board (here's an example) can be a DIY project although it's getting a bit down to the wire for that.

    For clothes, Primary is a good place for high quality, solid colors, basic patterns, gender neutral stuff, that sort of thing. For more girl specific, I like the stuff at Princess Awesome because it's not traditional girly girly stuff.
