These ice packs have been a lifesaver for me. They hold the cold better than any of the drug store ones. The black type are more flexible:

This last one might be reserved for when you get home: BenGay. Some people don't like the smell of it or it makes them feel like they're 100 years old, but it does seem to help me. It has an immediate cooling effect and lasts for about 30-60 minutes, enough time to wind down from whatever activity had caused the pain to spike.
