Hario Skerton: Baseline manual grinder

Baratza Encore: Baseline electric grinder

Hario v60

Kalita Wave

Clever Dripper

Pick a grinder, pick one of the pourover methods (or get a French Press) and filters, and you're set. You can get a gooseneck kettle if you want for a better pour.

This is not a straightforward answer. Sorry.
It really depends on what you want to get out of the cup:

  • Do you want a full body? Kalita wave is more temperature stable than other brewers because the wavy filter keeps the coffee away from the brewer. The flat base allows more even extraction.

  • Do you want a really clean cup where you can taste all of the subtle notes? The Hario V60 is a Classic, brews a clean balanced cup. It has a thinner filter and is great for fruity floral coffees.

  • Do you want a clean cup for more people? Chemex has a thicker filter and brews a really clean cup. It also makes it easy to brew for multiple people at once.

  • Do you want the ability to do immersion and pour over? The Clever is really easy to use and is more forgiving than the other methods. You don't necessarily need a gooseneck kettle.

I personally use a V60. The others are all fantastic, you really can't go wrong.

Immersion brewing with paper filters is my preferred way to make coffee. You get the longer extraction of immersion methods with the cleanness of a paper filtered method. You can also make a lot more coffee than you can with an Aeropress.

Here are two good devices for this:

I love my Clever Dripper it's like the best of both pour over and french press.

For ease and lower cost, I'd recommend getting a hand grinder like a Hario Skerton and a Clever Dripper. If you have a little extra cash, step up to an electric burr grinder like the Baratza Encore. Any kind of electric kettle will be your best way of boiling water.

In a basic coffee system, grinding fresh before you brew is likely to make the greatest positive impact and electric is super easy. A hand grinder might take 30-45 seconds to grind for a batch of coffee, but that's a small time investment for a large return. In terms of brewers, lots of folks like the Aeropress for its portability and its ability to produce fantastic coffee, but I like the Clever because it's also very easy and tends to produce a normal cup of coffee rather than a more intense and concentrated cup that you get from the Aeropress.
