No worries! In the same house changes things a lot. You're in the UK, so have a look around for a set of PMR walkie talkies (license free, good for a mile or so of range). There are newer (and more expensive) digital models now that are more secure than the older analogue radios, but ultimately, any cheap consumer radio off the shelf could be listened in to by anyone determined enough. The likelihood is pretty low though.

Yeah, but maybe keep the contact to something like "Hey, can you come here? I need to talk to you." and keep anything more than that off-air and in person only.... the risk can be mitigated.

There is no privacy with these models, but again, you're not going to get that with a cheap off-the-shelf consumer radio anyway.
