Thanks for the suggestion. It makes me think since it is indeed an old model (I want this investment to last 5 years). While costs is indeed something I have to keep an eye on, I understand I have to be flexible in order to get what I really want...
While I take /u/washu_k 's advise above as sound and awesome, the fact that the reviews on the C7 mention a lot of issues with firmware and versions (1 vs 2) is making my research an ongoing event.
While looking at the DIR-865L AC1750 I stumbled upon this puppy: D-Link AC1750 Gigabit Wi-Fi Router.
In your experience, how does it compare to the old model (and to the Archers for that matter)?
Out in Warman we have Sasktel but don’t get great speeds. Our plan is 10 Mbps down and 1 up. The Sasktel router has very poor signal throughout the house and they gave us an access point but it doesn’t cover the whole house.
Would using something like the dir-859 be a better solution than the Sasktel access point?

Haha it's a pretty basic router from the ISP
I also have a D-Link AC router (https://www.amazon.ca/D-LINK-AC1750-Gigabit-Router-DIR-859/dp/B00PVCZI40)
I would like to try VLAN but would it work at all on these consumer grade equipments? (I have a bunch of 8 port unmanaged gigabit switch also)...
