When we had U-Verse I put a Gigabit switch below the gateway, and ran the critical devices on the switch.

I have the one, below, but there are plenty of other good ones out there.

There aren't any cables in the wall yet because the ethernet cable I am currently using is not long enough. I was going to order some Cat6 cable from monoprice to run behind the walls and this switch from Amazon. I already have the wall plates: the one for the office says "Cat5e/6," while the one for the bedroom is a coaxial/ethernet combo and says "compatible with Cat5 and Cat5e cable," and they both terminate in the wall.

My ISP is Verizon FiOS with a speed around 40 Mbps and my priority is to not have my PS3 (and PS4) slowed down at all for online gaming.

Two options: assuming your linksys is the full router and you want to spend a minimal amount, you can add a separate 1gig switch such as D-Link 5-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch (DGS-1005G) https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B003X7TRWE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Cn7XBb8NGA9BQ

Plug both your gaming pc and unRAID server into the new switch, and then run another Ethernet connection from the switch into your existing router. That will give you a full 1 gig connection between your tell systems, but you will still be limited to 100mb talking to anything not plugged directly into the new switch.

Other option would be to replace the whole thing with a new router that runs at 1 gig, but it's hard to recommend anything without knowing the rest of your networking setup (ie internet connection type, existing modem and router, etc...)

  1. I didn't live in Murdough, but there are very specific settings you can set to make sure you get the right speeds. If and when you get up there, hit me up and I can walk you through the process, it's very simple and it got me from 1Mbps down and up in Sneed to 10Mbps down and up very very consistently. If you're not technically inclined, don't bother reading past here, but all it involves is setting your duplex speed to 10FULL and using Google/OpenDNS DNS servers.

  2. Only one ethernet port per side of the room (as others said), but you should be able to buy a cheap switch (not a router) and run multiple wired devices. All a switch does is turn one port into many (if it's an un-managed switch, which it should be, don't buy a managed one). Something like this. Switches are not officially against the rules, but it's probably still a good idea not to get caught. Wireless is being rolled out to other dorms, but I think the only ones with it right now are Murray and Talkington (Boston).

  3. Connectify was my ad-hoc app of choice in the dorms. This was a couple of years ago, so I don't know how reliable it still is, but it worked for me. I left it on all the time using a custom SSID and never got caught or in trouble, but your mileage may vary.

  4. The first home game with Kliff coaching was spectacular. The reception he got from the crowd was inspiring.

Cheap switch like this will do the job. There are much better switches out there but seeing as you a college student im sure you will appreciate a cheap one :)
