I'll just say the brand isn't important, a hand held digital recorder that does NOT have noise cancelling software is a good place to start. Do NOT use your computer.

Just about any audio recording device works; evp have been captured not only with digital and tape recorders, but also on record, phonograph, even wire recorders. A few of my investigator friends routinely capture voices on video- which can be a bit frustrating when they aren't TRYING to get EVP but spirits know them and are biting at the bit to communicate it seems.

Personally, I go with a digital hand held; unlike tape recorders you'll never have to worry about the possibility of bleed over from the other side (serious researchers who still use this as their method of choice never use more than one side and always start with a fresh tape). The quality of the recording is slightly destroyed with each tape play, and editing (such as amplifying the section you hear an EVP and removing the background fuzz to make it easier to hear, perhaps even reversing it as some people occasionally get them in reverse) is a nightmare. With digital you can play it thousands of times and you never lose a fraction of quality and depending on the recorder it should be much easier to upload to your computer to edit in software such as Audacity or Audition.

It's also portable, which is nice. And you can use it for other things, like lectures etc if you want.

I would strongly recommend AGAINST recording with a mic attached to your computer. If you are successful in contacting a spirit they can manipulate electronic devices and BREAK them. Better it be a $50 recorder than a $500 laptop. I've had electronics break after recording sessions so yeah, better safe than sorry.

The kind you'd get would be determined by your budget. I'd suggest starting with something fairly cheap and then get something more expensive later when you are more experienced rather than getting something super expensive and only using it a few times. Offhand I don't remember the brand of mine, but I'll edit my post when I get home. I have one that when I pop it into two pieces there is a usb stick inside so I can transfer the data easily to my computer. A good starter is a hand held digital recorder, just make sure it doesn't have noise cancelling software as that often can't distinguish the difference between EVP and background noise- and ends up actually deleting the important stuff.

I'd recommend you research recorders and find one that works best for you in your budget. A quick look at possible recorders and this one is not TOO expensive and the instruction manual says it lets you turn off the noise filter. Make sure whatever recorder you get you put it at full quality recording. Reviews said this one had good quality, but I don't own it (the one I have is 10 years old and no longer for sale.)

You might find one that suits you better with more research. There is no special EVP recorder, products marketed as that are a gimmick lol.
