I would definitely recommend at least giving anal a try to see if it's for you. A small butt plug and some good lube won't set you back too much, can be purchased discreetly online, and isn't hard to stash away if that's an issue. This (semi-nsfw, Amazon) was my first plug. It may be a little bit on the large side for an absolute beginner, but if you take things nice and slow and don't force anything, it's one that'll leave you satisfied for years to come (if you're into it, anyway).
The other posts here cover lube pretty well, and while going to a sex shop would be nice, you shouldn't have any trouble finding out what you need to know online. As long as the lube is compatible with the toy and you use enough, things should go okay. Use more than you think you need (I've seen it said that too much is almost enough!) and take it slow. If you feel any pain, stop, back out a bit, and try to relax a little before continuing. Never force anything. Another thing to note is that you should NOT be using numbing lubes. Numbing increases the chance that you'll go too far too fast and cause some damage.
Moving on, I'll second the magic wand for frontal stimulation, but be aware that it is very intense and a little costly (mine was $55). I personally believe that anyone with genitals that they like to have stimulated and that can handle it should own one. The upside to using it on a penis is that there is variable sensitivity along the shaft/head, so you can figure out where your own personal sweet spot is.

Its probably just the wrong toy. I have two suggestions. The first is the jackrabbit - I know you said you're looking for a more realistic looking toy but I can't stress enough how many women I know that LOVE this toy. The second is a buttplug. I know it sounds more pervy than you might want, but if you want to use something with your SO, you will need to start small and work your way up. This one is flexible and small enough to be a good starter.
