I took philosophy and science fiction at my university. We mostly just watched episodes of Doctor Who and wrote about the philosophical aspects of it. Also my teacher co-edited this book: Doctor Who and Philosophy. She was cool.

I picked my copies up at the school bookstore, because I was in a rush. I found copies of them on Amazon though:
Not surprisingly, they're all cheaper on Amazon when compared to my school's bookstore.
Feel free to ignore my entry, because I already see people with items closer to the price than mine. It was just fun to go through my wishlist!
Man, everybody is super close! Unfortunately I don't think I'll cut it--I have this super cool book on my book wishlist for $17.57 (added March 31). I see lots of people with items closer than mine, but I'll put this in the running just in case!
Since everyone keeps asking.
I got mine at a used book store a few years ago. It really is quite deep.
You guys might enjoy these, too: Final Fantasy, Doctor Who, Star Wars. I used to work at a bookstore and the "_____ and Philosophy Books" were some of my favorite to recommend to people.
Tell your wife that your kids are very bright for liking a show like Dr. Who, give the argument that this guy online said it was cool.
But really, kids should develop their own taste and you should try to sneak in some philosophy lessons for your kids based on Doctor Who.
Also, as far as games go, let them play Ico, SotC, Mini Ninjas, Osmos, Trine, World of Goo, Cave Story, Psychonauts, Minecraft, Limbo (not too close to bedtime) and especially Braid. If they like the Doctor, they should love Braid. Once they finish, tell them there are secret stars hidden in the worlds and that there is an alternate ending if they get them all.
Furthermore, don't worry about your kids playing shooters, they will not become more aggressive by doing so, but always keep an eye out for any signs of psychopathic tendencies in your kids :)
If you find that any of your kids, especially the 2 youngest, start displaying weird behaviour or getting scared in the dark and stuff like that, talk to them about games not being real and that they are safe.
If you don't have braid, I would be happy to provide it if you give me your steamID
Edit: after reading about your wife worrying about your kids becoming nerds:
