Well, keeping a puppies attention at all for more than 10 seconds is a feat in and of itself. Don't have high expectations. Attention comes with maturity.

It's fine if they get 'dependent' on treats as puppies. As long as it works, it works. Your goal is more to create habits. Once they get older, you won't need the treats as much because it becomes more like, 'this is just what I do', rather than something that needs to be bribed to do.

Some dogs are more play motiavated too. You can also create more motivation with play if they aren't that in to it too.

I just got this book and it's really good for breaking down different ways to play (with food too) and how to use it to train.

She has a few books too - check into those? This one is play specific.

Hmmm... This is a really difficult thing to say for sure for me.

My first instinct is to say that your dog is still just settling in and that he may become more motivated. It took my dog about 1-2 months before she became actually motivated to work after I adopted her, and now she's doing fantastic with training!

But your dog is likely going to be more difficult to motivate than you were hoping for. Which is great for making you a better trainer, but difficult if you really wanted a super sharp on the uptake dog.

I'm sad because the registration period closed, but I would really take a look at Fenzi Dog Sports Academy - particularly the play class. But that class is running now and isn't on the schedule again for a while :(

The instructor who teaches the play class also wrote a few books that you might look into though.

But it is really frustrating to have a dog who just is not what you had hoped, and so long as you personally make sure your dog was well cared for until you or a rescue found a good home for them, I personally wouldn't have an issue with that.
