Neat!

A hot air gun is all you really need to do SMD parts, though a hot plate or reflow oven (a toaster oven can also do the job) does make the process quicker. I recommend you get a decent set of ESD tweezers and a bright white LED light. Also one of these for smaller components (0603/0402).

If you want to make the process even more painless (especially for really complex boards) I also recommend getting a stencil for your board from OSHStencils (https://www.oshstencils.com/). Then you can just spread out the solder paste, remove the stencil, place components, and heat up the board.

Now that I've switched to making SMD boards its hard to go back. Reflowing is just so much quicker and easy than doing every pin by hand. And it results in smaller, nicer looking boards in my opinion.

Good luck!
