This morning I used the Utopia Care razor, which (at $11) seems an extremely good value. I would say the head is a trifle more aggressive than those on the Maggard razors, but I'm starting to feel that novices have to learn in any case, and they'll learn whatever razor they're given. Within reason. The Utopia Care is, I think, within reason.

It's not.

Buy a Utopia razor. Or, for higher quality, a Maggard Razor. If you want a brand-name razor, consider Edwin Jagger. For something made with higher-quality materials, Weber and Standard razors are good options. You can even get a Standard razor with some cream and an alum block for less than the cost of that razor in this box. But while the razor you linked may not be terrible, it is terribly overpriced.

  • Utopia razor $10.99. I haven't super closely followed threads about this razor. But those that I did see, people reported that it shaved well. The problem is quality control. As sometimes the razor has arrived with a bent baseplate which makes the razor unusable. But if that happens Amazon should replace it.
  • Omega 10049 boar brush $9.75. Quality boar brush. There's a black one from another seller for the same price. This post has general information about shaving brushes. But basically boar brushes need to be soaked and there's a break-in period.
  • Arko shaving soap pack of two $4.35 Here's a post about how to use Arko shaving stick.
  • Blade samplers in Amazon are overpriced. So buy the blades from Tryablade.com The below blades should cost $6.10 with shipping.

That kit just isn't very good. Cheap brush, cheap razor, questionable blades.

Amazon isn't the best place to shop for gear, you will find much better options at a place like www.maggardrazors.com.

If you do want to buy from Amazon you should forget that kit and piece something together yourself. You'll spend a couple bucks more but you will get much higher quality gear for those few bucks.

Well this one is just over the $10 mark, but has free shipping. It was my first DE, and it's a fairly solid 3 piece. I used it for about 3-4 months till I got my Merkur, and its held up to travel abuse ever since.

I see you mention broke college student looking for a long and heavy razor...why not take a look at the Utopia? Seems to be fairly well reviewed and for the price you can't go wrong. Worst case you can re-use the long heavy handle on another head you do like later...
