I didn't want to shoot DrGrinch down but I've never seen the benefit of a high end amp. For my home system HTR-5730 might be a cheap piece of shit, but it has accurate audio reproduction. I don't need loud music. I'm a soft listener, if that makes any sense. So yes, I'll have to agree with the over priced comment you make, even if I have a lack of experience.

However, I'm willing to pay a pretty penny for good speakers. It isn't that I lack money, but more I look for reasonable buys. And, while I know nothing when it comes to car audio, if it is anything like a home theater setup, than the stereo itself (HU) is fine as an amp, and then there is the speakers. I don't think I need any other devices in the chain. So what I'm essentially looking for is a decent HU (nothing special) and 4 high end speakers. Two higher middle end ones on the door, and two lower ones in the back.

I don't know why everything has to be so complicated when it comes to terminology and all of these different products. With headphones I see the technical details, I can look at reviews, and generally know quite well what I'm buying. When it comes to car speakers it feels like there is nothing but a brand name and I hate that.

Generally in the past my ears have been good enough to find good underrated speakers. Before my DT770 I owned a $20 Koss headphone that was quite similar. Anyone who listened to it unanimously thought it was multihundred dollar headphones. When they died after around .. i dunno .. 15 years of use, I chose the DT770s because they are the closest things on the market to what I had before. I know what I like, but with headphones it is easy. When it comes to car stereo stuff I'm pushed away from all of it. It seems gimmicky at best. Why is it so hard to find speakers that sound nice?

meh. Sorry for ranting. ;)

edit: What about something like this? I'm not keen paying over 1k on speakers without hearing them first hand, and I'm not sure what those black crossover boxes are, nor am I sure if it would fit in my car properly. Maybe I should have asked this from the beginning.
