Don't listen to any of the equipment suggestions so far.. Don't buy any consumer grade gear. It'll just break...
What are you using the system for? Background music? Open Mic Nights?
What equipment do you have already?
$1000 is a pretty tight budget for something like this. Also where are you located? I'll assume in the US.
I'd start with this mixer/amp Yorkville CA1
and Evid Speakers The evids are great and have super wide coverage, home speakers are usually far to narrow for this kind of use. The amp has multi zone functionality so you can shut off different zones (like if you have a party room and don't want the sound from the football game going in there) Yorkville stuff is pretty tough and my company has installed plenty of them in all kinds of bars and they will go forever.
I find lots of bars/cafes/restaurants cheap out and don't buy a sub and end up blowing the snot out of their BGM systems with too much low end and then get caught up in a cycle of buying new shitty systems every few years. Buy the right stuff and it will last forever.
I'd add an EVID sub, and that will need an extra amplifier too. That alone will run close to $1000 but it'll give you guys the punch that you probably are looking for.
