Right now the GPU market is so messed up you don't have a lot of options. Either an RX580 or 1060 6gb card but because of the mining craze there are zero 580's available new from first party sellers.

Here's) a screen shot of camelcamelcamel.com showing that a 1060 6gb card should be around $292 which is the average first party Amazon seller price. 3rd party average pricing is $393 a full 100 dollars over what they should be selling for.

Pretty basic questions - I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card, which is currently a GTX 760 1.5GB to something more current - at this point I'm looking at a GTX 1060 6GB. Everything I've read suggests that this is more than enough for 1080p max detail games - I play on a TV so things like 144hz, VR, or 4K are not a concern at this time.

Now, the model I was looking at was an EVGA GTX 1060 SC 6GB; I think the SC is supercharged or superclocked or something, but I see it has higher clock speeds than the regular model. My questions are the following:

  • My GTX 760 is an OEM card, and from what I can tell it uses PCI-E 16X Gen 3 - is this the appropriate slot for a GTX 1060, or are there other specifications/revisions of PCI-E that are needed?
  • I've read bits and pieces about EVGA cards being fire hazards - is this true for the 1060 as well? In relation to this, I see that there is ACX 2.0 and ACX 3.0 options (with the 3.0 card being noticeably more expensive). Should I be concerned about the cooling system version, or is that BIOS update enough to alleviate overheating concerns?
  • In the Amazon link above, I see options for a regular 1060, the 1060 SC (which I'm leaning towards) and the 1060 FTW ACX 3.0 which is $80 more than the 1060 SC; the clock speeds aren't too different, but is there any real reason why I should spend the extra on the FTW ACX 3.0 model instead of the SC model?
  • Final question: I see some 1060s are short and others are long - I think to fit in my case I'd need the short one, and the 760 I'm replacing appears to be a short model as well. Is there any advantage/disadvantage in the card sizes, or are these options available solely to accommodate different case sizes?

I've been out of the loop on PC parts for a while - I used to know all this shit like the back of my hand but haven't needed to keep up on this stuff for a while. I've done a bunch of research but I thought I'd ask those who are more in the loop just to make sure that what I've learned is actually correct.

BONUS QUESTION: I'm looking at the 1060, but should I be considering the RX480 8GB? The most graphically intensive game I play is GTA V, which I don't really play at all since my 760 can't handle it, and I refuse to play it without it looking as good as possible. I've read about advantages in DX11/DX12 for each card, but so far a lot of these differences seem negligible to me. At this point, I believe that I can't really go wrong whether I get a 1060 or RX480 - is that belief correct?
